ENGR 101 – Fall 2009

Taught by John Harrison

ENGR 101 – Phase I

Me Motor: students designed and built a project of their choice that involved at least a motor and battery

introduction to circuits, simple mechanics, building, presentation skills

Us Arduino: students worked in pairs to design, build, and program a project involving a microcontroller, LEDs, and motors

introduction to microcontrollers, programming, and working in teams

They Censor: students chose a project to build that included sensors (ultrasonic, infrared, light, etc.)

incorporation of sensors into work, public demonstration of projects

What is it like to be an engineering student?

Class project – The Red Baron: Students worked in 9 teams of 2-4 students

to design and build a part of the car conversion or oil filtering system

Students explored team work, interdisciplinary design, and project management

Students experienced the problem-solving process while having an actual product as an end goal

ENGR 101 – Phase IIWhat is it like to be an engineer?

The website: Throughout the semester, the students presented and

organized their work via the class website This publicly-accessible website allowed students to upload

pictures, videos, tables, files, and more The social-networking aspects of the site allowed students to

easily contact each other, the instructors, their managing engineers, and other artists and technicians that use the site for their work

Managing engineers: Each group in the final project was assigned a managing

engineer (faculty member, upperclassman, or professional) to help guide their design and project management

ENGR 101 – LogisticsHow was this all managed?
