  • 4.5Methodology4.5.1DataCollectionWeconductedinterviewswithbothownersoftherespectivechinesemedicalhallduringourvisitstotheirshops.Atthesametime,wewentthereequippedwithcamerasandvoicerecorderstoobtainthenecessaryevidenceandmaterials.Evenbeforeourvisittothechinesemedicalhalls,wedidaresearchonrelevantinformationsandfamiliarizedourselveswiththetraditionalchinesemedicinebusiness.Thisenabledustoformulaterelevantinterviewquestionswiththeresultofbetter,moreworkabledata.4.5.2DataPresentationTheendgoalofthisassignmentwastoproduceagoodwrittenreportandverbalpresentation.Toachievethat,wedelegatedeachindividualinourteamtoworkonacertainsubtopic.Thismethodenabledeveryonetofocusexplicitlyonacertaintopicanddatascopeandthusincreasetheproductivityaswellasefficiencyofeachmember.Havinggotteneveryonetoarrangetheinitialdata,wethenfilteredandeditedit,lookingoutforbasicgrammaticalerrorsaswellasensuringastructuredflowtotheoveralldataarrangement.Inthemeantime,afewothersworkedonthepresentationslides.Referringtothewrittenreport,theyincludedallthekeyelementsofthereportintotheslides.Lastly,wefamiliarizedourselveswiththesubtopicallocatedtoustoensureasmoothverbalpresentation.

    Chineseherbalmedicinehasbeenaroundforalongtime,withahistoryofabout4000years.Itallstartedaround2300yearsago,whenShenNung,nowwidelyrecognizedasthefatherofChinesemedicine,harvestedandcodifiedwildherbalmedicine.Eversincethen,Chineseherbalmedicinehasexperiencedconstantimprovementandmodification.

    UnlikeWesternherbs,Chineseherbsconsistnotonlyofplants,butalsoof

    animalpartsandminerals.Itfundamentallyincludestheknowledgeofhundredsofherbsandformulae.Inmostcasesherbsarenotusedonitsownbutareusedintandemwithoneanother.Formulasusuallyconsistof10to15ormoreingredients,eachhavingafunctionalrelationshipwiththeothers.Oneoftheadvantagesofputtingtogetheralltheindividualdryherbsisthattheprescriptioncanbecreatedspecificallyforeachpatientandadjustedonaregularbasisinrelationtothechangesofthepatient'scondition.

    Intheoldendays,mostoftheChinesemedicalhallservedasaonestopcenter

    Nowadays,theChinesemedicalhallsinMalaysianotonlyprovidemedical

    treatments,manyofthemhaveventuredintothemarketofherbalmixesforsoups,dessertsandteas.Somearesellingwesternmedicineandmiscellaneousgoodsaswell.Thisservesasaresponsetothechangingdemandsandneedsofthisera.Unfortunately,anincreasingamountofChinesemedicalhallshavebeenfindingitincreasinglydifficulttosustainthisbusinessinthiseraandareslowlywaningunderthepressureofbusiness.
