C. Meaning

Reading: Tafsir on Suratul Naas from Tafsir Ibn Kathir: (Younger students can be read to)Be sure to read any Arabic text to practice your Arabic reading and pronunciation. Don’t just skip it. See what words you recognize.

These (rabb, malik, ilah), are three attributes from the attributes of the Lord, the Mighty and Majestic. They are lordship, sovereignty and divinity. Thus, He is the Lord of everything, the King of everything and the God of everything. All things are created by Him, owned by Him, and subservient to Him. Therefore, He commands whoever is seeking protection to seek refuge with the One Who has these attributes from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws. This (the whisperer) is the devil that is assigned to man. For verily, there is not any of the Children of Adam except that he has a companion that beautifies wicked deeds for him. This devil will go to any lengths to confuse and confound him. The only person who is safe is He Whom Allah protects.

It is confirmed in the Sahih that he (the Prophet) said,

ل قد إال أحد من منكم »ما قرينه« به وك

(There is not a single one of you except that his companion (a devil) has been assigned to him.) They (the Companions) said, "What about you, O Messenger of Allah'' He replied,

فال فأسلم، عليه أعانني الله أن إال »نعم، بخير« إال يأمرني

(Yes. However, Allah has helped me against him and he has accepted Islam. Thus, he only commands me to do good.)

It is also confirmed in the Two Sahihs from Anas, who reported the story of Safiyyah when she came to visit the Prophet while he was performing I`tikaf, that he went out with her during the night to walk her back to her house. So, two men from the Ansar met him (on the way). When they saw the Prophet, they began walking swiftly. So, the Messenger of Allah said,

In your notebook, take notes on the above paragraph. Use the underlined words/phrases to help you.

ها رسلكما، »على ة إن حيي« بنت صفي

(Slow down! This is Safiyyah bint Huyay!) They said, "Glory be to Allah, O Messenger of Allah!'' He said,

يطان »إن مجرى آدم ابن من يجري الشي الدم، قلوبكما في يقذف أن خشيت وإنا، ا« أو شيئ قال: شر

(Verily, Shaytan runs in the Son of Adam like the running of the blood. And verily, I feared that he might cast something into your hearts -- or he said -- evil.) Sa`id bin Jubayr reported that Ibn `Abbas said concerning Allah's statement,

اس ﴿الوسواس ﴾الخن(The whisperer (Al-Waswas) who withdraws.) "The devil who is squatting (perched) upon the heart of the Son of Adam. So when he becomes absentminded and heedless he whispers. Then, when he remembers Allah he withdraws.'' Mujahid and Qatadah also said this.

Al-Mu`tamir bin Sulayman reported that his father said, "It has been mentioned to me that Shaytan is Al-Waswas. He blows into the heart of the Son of Adam when he is sad and when he is happy. But when he (man) remembers Allah, Shaytan withdraws.'' Al-`Awfi reported from Ibn `Abbas;

﴾الوسواس ﴿

(The whisperer.) "He is Shaytan. He whispers and then when he is obeyed, he withdraws.'' As for Allah's saying;

ذى اس صدور فى يوسوس ﴿ال ﴾ الن(Who whispers in the breasts of An-Nas.) Is this specific for the Children of Adam as is apparent, or is it general, including both mankind and Jinns

There are two views concerning this. This is because they (the Jinns) are also included in the usage of the word An-Nas (the people) in most cases.

Ibn Jarir said, "The phrase Rijalun min Al-Jinn (Men from the Jinns) has been used in reference to them, so it is not strange for the word An-Nas to be applied to them also.'' Then Allah says,

Page 6: English - Talibiddeen Jr. Companion Blog · Web viewWhat is the preposition in this sentence. What word tells where you did it.). Teacher can prepare simple sentences at the child’s

ة ﴿من اس الجن ﴾ والن(Of Jinn and An-Nas.) Is this explanatory of Allah's statement,

ذى اس صدور فى يوسوس ﴿ال ﴾ الن(Who whispers in the breasts of An-Nas.) Then, Allah explains this by saying,

ة ﴿من اس الجن ﴾ والن(Of Jinn and An-Nas.) This is supportive of the second view. It has also been said that Allah's saying,

ة ﴿من اس الجن ﴾ والن(Of Jinn and An-Nas) is an explanation of who is it that whispers into the breasts of mankind from the devils of mankind and Jinns. This is similar to Allah's saying,

نبى لكل جعلنا ﴿وكذلك شيـطين عدوا بعض إلى بعضهم يوحى والجن اإلنس القول زخرف ﴾غرورا

(And so We have appointed for every Prophet enemies -- Shayatin among mankind and Jinn, inspiring one another with adorned speech as a delusion.) (6:112) Imam Ahmad recorded that Ibn `Abbas said, "A man came to the Prophet and said, `O Messenger of Allah! Sometimes I say things to myself that I would rather fall from the sky than say (aloud openly). ' The Prophet said,

ذي لله الحمد أكبر الله أكبر، »الله رد ال الوسوسة« إلى كيده

(Allah is Most Great! Allah is Most Great! All praise is due to Allah Who sent his (Shaytan's) plot back as only a whisper.)'' Abu Dawud and An-Nasa'i also recorded this Hadith.

C. Language Study-Arabic

I. Vocabulary

Pretest: Your teacher will call out the English translations of the words of the surah (not in order).

Write as many as you can in Arabic.

Practice: For the words you didn’t know the spelling of, but knew the meaning:

1. Write each word in spelling stairs at least 5x each.2. Play tic tac toe. You must write the correct spelling of a word your teacher

calls out before you can mark your space.

For each word that you did not know the meaning of:1. Play tic tac toe (as above) or

2. Play the ladder game, with the English word written on the steps. You must tell what the Arabic word is to advance up the steps. If you miss a word, your teacher will tell you the correct word and you either go down to the bottom or a pre-specified amount of steps.

3. Play Bingo with the English words on the board. (or Arabic on board). *Student should prepare Bingo board to get added practice with words.

4. Make numbered flash cards of the words. Put Arabic on one side, English on the other . Turn over a flash card in English and write the correct Arabic word on a piece of paper.Do the same with the Arabic, writing the correct English word. Repeat this activity(or any others) as needed throughout the unit.

5. Play Clue Game. Teacher calls out a definition or clue (e.g. this is a creation of Allah made out of smokeless fire) and the student writes the Arabic.

II. Grammar

Harfu Jarr. Bi, min and fee are called harfu jarr. A. They are kind of like prepositions in English. B. They precede nouns.C. The word behind the harfu jarr takes a kasrah on the end (making it

majrur)(FYI: A dammah on the end makes it marfu’ and a fat-hah on the end makes it mansub)

Page 9: English - Talibiddeen Jr. Companion Blog · Web viewWhat is the preposition in this sentence. What word tells where you did it.). Teacher can prepare simple sentences at the child’s

1. Locate the words bi, min, and fee in the surah. Notice that the vowel on the end is a kasrah.2. Find 5 more occurrences of each (bi, min, fee) word in the Quraan. Write them and the word that comes after it in Arabic. Is the word behind it a noun (ism)?3. If you have other Arabic texts/textbooks, look up 5 more harfu jar.

D. Language Study-English

I. Vocabulary Building/Review

Without the use of a dictionary, write the part of speech and the definition of each word as used in the surah.(For younger children, the teacher can define/discuss these terms).

You may use a dictionary only after you have at first attempted to do the above by yourself.

Part of Speech

Definition

a. seekb. refugec. evild. withdrawe. whisper

II. Word Study

From the surah, we learn that Allah is the “King” of mankind. In general, a king is a ruler of a kingdom.

A king is a monarch, a nation's ruler or head of state usually by hereditary right.

A king is also a patriarch, a male ruler. A queen, a woman who is in power is called a matriarch, Note: A matriarch does not have to be a queen and a patriarch does not have to be a king.

“arch” is Greek for govern, rule; ruler, chief [first in position]) Patr- means father or paternal Matr- means mother or maternal

arch-, patr-, matr-

Using a dictionary or other reference, see how many words you can come up with that begin with the following roots/prefixes. Write down the definition of the word as well.

(**Make sure they are related to the meaning of these roots/prefixes.**)

Matr-

How many words can you come up with that have arch- in them) beginning, middle, or end.

Bonus: Research to find out two countries that have a matriarchy. Include facts such as how long the leader has been in power, their ages, political parties, etc. if possible.

III. Grammar: Prepositions For Older Students:

Prepositions, Object of Prepositions, Prepositional Phrases

A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in a sentence.

Below are some common prepositions.

The noun that follows the preposition is called the object of the preposition. One or more words may come between the preposition and its object.

Example: The Quraan is the book of Allah.

Of = preposition Allah = object of the preposition

A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun as the object of the preposition.

Examples: The Quraan is the book of Allah. Maryam set the Quraan on the table.

of Allah = prepositional phrase on the table = prepositional phrase

1. Read the following sentences. Copy the sentences and circle each preposition and underline its object.

a. Farid stayed at Mikhail’s house.b. They read stories about the prophets and companions.

about above across after against along among around at behind below beneath beside between beyond

by down during except for

from in inside into near

of off on onto outside over past to through underup upon with within without

Page 12: English - Talibiddeen Jr. Companion Blog · Web viewWhat is the preposition in this sentence. What word tells where you did it.). Teacher can prepare simple sentences at the child’s

c. Then it was time for bed.d. Farid brushed his teeth in the bathroom.e. Mikhail said the duaa for sleeping.f. Beside Mikhail lay his cat Mujahid.g. Mujahid crept under Mikhail’s covers.h. Mikhail though a mouse had sneaked into his bed.i. Farid heard a shout from Mike’s bed.j. He saw Mujahid race across the room.

2. Using a book of your choice, skim through, locate and write 10 prepositional phrases. Underline the preposition and circle the object of the preposition.

3. List all the prepositional phrases from the surah. Circle the preposition and underline the object of the preposition.

4. Choose two prepositions from each column of the preposition chart and write each in a sentence. Try to use an Islamic theme/subject matter for your sentences or use some of the nouns/verbs from the surah for sentence starters. Circle the preposition and underline the object of the preposition.

Vary the position of the prepositional phrase; it can be in the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence. This makes your writing more interesting.

Teacher can write the sentences down and child identifies the prepositions. (Teacher may need to prompt. What is the preposition in this sentence. What word tells where you did it.).

5. Teacher can prepare simple sentences at the child’s reading level and have them circle or write the preposition (in, up, on, etc).

IV. Writing: Editorials

An editorial offers an opinion. The writer of an editorial presents facts as a news article might. However, the editorial write use the facts to state an opinion. Below are two examples of editorials.

An Easy Way to Beat the OddsBy [insert your name and title]

When I walk through the hallways here at [insert name of school], I'm always impressed by you, the students I see and work with. You're bright, energetic, creative, and so uniquely yourselves. I also know you're smart. That’s why I'm going to suggest to you a smart way to stay healthy: wear a seat belt. Every time you get in a car. It's easy, it's cheap, and it's effective. If you get in a crash, wearing a seat belt can reduce your chance of being disabled, scarred, or killed by 45-60 percent. Those are pretty good odds. Unfortunately, many teenagers don't take advantage of these odds. Two-thirds of the 16- to 18-year-olds killed in car crashes in the year 2000 weren't buckled up. [Author: For the number of unbelted teens killed and injured in your State, refer to the "16- to 18-Year-Olds" chart enclosed in this insert.] I’m not the only one who cares about your safety. The police hate having to tell parents that their son or daughter was injured or killed in a crash—just as much as doctors and nurses hate delivering this information. The police would rather pull you over for a ticket than pull you out of a wreck. So during the month of May, the police will be participating in a special law enforcement effort to make sure everyone wears seat belts, even teenagers. So choose now to start getting in the habit of buckling up. Beat the odds. Show how smart you are. Remind your friends to do the same thing. Because we all want to see each other in the hallway tomorrow morning.

I eel by 5thperiod! Don’t you think that if kids got recess for just 13 or 14 min after lunch or something it would help? Cause 6ththrough 8thperiod might as well not be there cause of the little bit of work we get done. Most kids even fall asleep the last part of the day. Its cause they are tired. They’ve been sitting in small wooden chairs all day long. And the only break they get is to go to therye lockers. So really by having about 14 or 15 minutes of outside fun would belike saving 4 periods in a whole day! Maybe even more. n Conclusion I believe that if you will agree with my piece good things will happen at Meece Middle school. I believe better grades will be coming in on the report cards and teachers bragging. So please take my piece seriously.

I remember whenever I was in Elementry school and the one thing students prized having most in thier day was recess. We would work so hard just so we would get recess. We would work and work until that bell rang. We would take spelling tests, and read flash cards, practice cursive handwriting. We would do all this work & then whenever that bell rang we would charge like bolts of lightning to line up at that door to go outside. Then we would come in from running and playing and that would not stop us from working. Instead of being worn out it seemed we were energized to work more. What I am trying to get to is I think the children at Meece Middle School should be allowed to have recess. I believe middle school kids are more highly punished then they are rewarded. For Instance your child trys their best to school. But What do they get to show for it? Absolutley nothing. And then they get punished for not turning in one homework assignment when they are usually honor role students. I just don’t think that’s right. That kids don’t get rewarded for their good efforts and they do get punished. You get 1 day In School suspension (ISS) for graffiti on the wassl. You can get 2 days of In School suspension for using profanity. And for being late to class you can get up to 2 or 3 days of (ISS)! Nowhere are the few ways we are rewarded for honor role (As & Bs) on your Report card nothing. For minding your teachers &being good, nothing. For doing all your work, nothing. We don’t even get holiday partys!!! I think this is just unacceptable! Now my grandmother, Shirley S. is a woman that knows I am usualy a good student. And this is what she said, “I think that if students were given more rewards and given more praise, and not as much punishment they would do better at school and work more I think kids should get a break from work.”I know that you are probably thinking, well I know kids need recess & everything, but if they do get it they won’t want to work anymore. Well that’s entirely wrong. It would only make them want to work more. For Example, when you get in from work do you want to work more orlay down and take a nap? I think you would say take a nap. Well when kids get tired they don’t want to work anymore either. Don’t you think our brains get tired after a while? Well they do. That is why we would work because we would want to go to recess so bad we would work har until time to go that way we would get recess. And after recess our minds would be refreshed and we would want to work just as hard so we would get recess the next day.I’d say you think us having recess would take up time from our school work. No it wouldn’t actually it would be saving time. You know how kids are just so tired by 6thperiod that they feel like all they want to do is sit there in the chair & not do nothing. That’s exactly how

(Note: the first editorial was not edited and is in the form as found on the internet)

The tone of editorials tends to be lighter than a news article, but sometimes they are more serious than the ones here.

Discussion:

What is each editorial trying to persuade?Do you think the editorials are convincing? Why or why not? Which one is more convincing? Why?

Your assignment:

We know that Shaytan whispers into the hearts of jinn and men. He can be very convincing in his whisperings and encourage us to do wrong things. Your assignment is to write an editorial trying to persuade someone not to give in to the Shaytan and convince them that he is evil and should not be listened to. Remember, an editorial uses facts to state an opinion, so use proofs to back up your opinion. You may offer solutions as well how to avoid his whisperings, bi-ithnillah.

Use information that you learned from your reading as well as other sources to make a strong case for your opinion.

Be sure to end on a strong “note” such as summarizing or encouraging reader to take action

Write it in newspaper form, including a by line as in the second example editorial.

Proofread your work before turning in. Use the writing game cards to help you through the writing process.

As part of your prewriting, state what your opinion is. What are you trying to persuade people to think or do?

Write your main idea here:Refer to it often to make sure you stay on track, insha Allah
