IH Galway is an affiliate member of International House World Organisation, which was originally founded by John and Brita Haycraft in Cordoba, Spain, in 1953. Since then, IH has grown to the world famous organisation it is today, with 160 affiliate member language and teacher training centres in 52 countries around the globe. John Haycraft designed the original CELTA course in 1962 at IH London, and IH teachers and trainers around the world have followed in John’s footsteps as innovators in course book writing and

teacher training design.

Galway is the European Capital of Culture 2020 and it’s not difficult to see why: The International Arts Festival and the Film Festival are just two of the arts offers our students enjou and take part in in summer. Galway is famous for great traditional Irish music, which can be heard all over the city, and our students enjoy listening to the sounds and taking part in the Irish dancing sessions too! This programme combines an interactive learning experience with sports, activities and visits, focusing on Irish culture and beautiful sights. We have designed a customised programme based on our students’ needs and interests, and in class, we help them complete project work, focusing on the essential skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as vocabulary acquisition.

We help older teens prepare for study at university level. In class, we focus on the development of academic English skills and vocabulary and we help our students to develop essential academic skills, such as note taking in lectures, making presentations and projects, and we also help them to develop other essential skills such as study skills, adapting to life as a university student, cultural awareness and becoming independent learners. This two-week programme is aimed at students studying in bilingual schools and the minimum entry level is B2. Our Leadership Programme is designed to help students

develop essential study and life skills such as problem-solving, teambuilding and making presentations, with a focus on a specific project which students select themselves, such as business, IT, the environment and entrepreneurship, for example, and with interesting talks and lectures offered by guest speakers.

Based on our unique experience working with groups from the Arabian Gulf and China, for example, we offer a programme which helps our students develop the essential communication skills of speaking, listening, writing and reading, as well as developing their grammar and vocabulary. We also focus on developing our students’ cultural wareness and practical English.

General English 20 lessons per weekWe help you to practise the key communication skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, with a focus on grammar and vocabulary development. Our main aim is to help our students become confident using English in a variety of real life contexts. We follow a course book, combined with motivating authentic materials.

20/30 lessons per weekWe help you to focus on the grammar and vocabulary you need, and you will practise speaking, listening, reading and writing skills at exam level. Our teachers help you to develop exam techniques to prepare you to complete the exam effectively. You will have practice tests during your course.

University of Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults - CELTAThis course, which was originally designed by the rounder of IH, John Haycraft, at IH London in 1962, is the most recognised initial teacher training course in the world. According to research carried out by Cambridge, 87% of English language teaching positions advertised around the world require applicants to have a CELTA qualification – and no other.

• CELTA full time course: 4 weeks • CELTA Part time/Online: 12 weeks, including distance

learning units and weekly face to face teaching practice sessions.

Accommodation

Homestay All our homestays are based in Galway city and within walking distance of the centre. Homestays are all types: a couple with young children, teenagers or older children who have left home, single parent families, single people… there is no standard type. Accommodation in a home stay is:

• Single bedroom with shared bathroom (en suite is also available)• Breakfast and dinner during the week and lunch is included at the weekend

We visit each new home stay to ensure that they meet IH Quality Standards and we follow up with regular inspection visits to ensure that these Quality Standards are met.
