At this time he was inspired by Handel’s oratorio “The Messiah” to write his own great masterpiece, so was this amazing sight of the universe the seed for his “Creation”? As Albrechtsberger mentioned in a letter to Beethoven in 1796, after he had met Haydn in Vienna, that the composer was full of ideas for his oratorio based on Milton’s “Paradise Lost”. Haydn’s World:A Voyage of Discovery

ENGLISHHAYDNFESTIVAL

25th Anniversary Year

Bridgnorth is a hill-town, a rarity in England. It stands high above theriver Severn, its High Town and Low Town connected by a funicularrailway. The skyline is dramatically broken by the two church towers ofSt Mary Magdalene, the parish church, and St Leonard rebuilt in 1862and now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust, where the EnglishHaydn Festival is held each year.

The old market town has a wealth of beautiful, interesting and historicbuildings; the Castle boasts a leaning tower, just as Cromwell left it.Bridgnorth is the northern terminus of the celebrated Severn Valley SteamRailway.

Beyond Bridgnorth lies all the beauty, the wild country and the literaryand historic fascination of Shropshire, at its very best in late spring.

The Churches Conservation Trust is warmly thanked for making theuse of St Leonard’s Church available to the Festival.
