A group of schoolboys went hiking and exploring in the jungle. They

were thrilled to see waterfalls, jungle creepers and enormous trees as

they walked through the jungle. They watched monkeys swinging on the

branches of trees and eating wild fruits.

The boys were so engrossed with exploring their surroundings that

they forgot time was slipping by quickly. They were also unaware that

they had wandered deep into the jungle and away from the track which

they had followed while entering the jungle. They were lost in the maze

of trees and creepers.

By now, they were hungry. So they sat under a tree to eat their

sandwiches, peanuts and fruits. Then it started to rain and it grew

dark, making it all the more difficult for the boys to retrace their

steps in an attempt to get out of the jungle.

In the end, they decided to spend the night in the jungle. They huddled

Chinese all over the world celebrate Chinese New Year in February

when the Lunar Year usually begins.

The preparations begin a month or so earlier as there are many things

to be done before the great day arrives. Shops and supermarkets stock

all kinds of Chinese delicacies which the Chinese must obtain and store

up for the festival.

In Chinese homes, the women get busy making cakes, biscuits, glutinous

rice cakes and jellies which are stored away carefully. Homes are

cleaned up, new curtains sewn, and new cushions and carpets bought to

give the home a new look.

Children are the ones who enjoy the festive season most. They receive

red packets containing money from their parents and their elders. New

dresses are worn.

On New Year's eve, the whole family gathers in the parents' home for

a re-union dinner. Many delicious dishes make up the meal and everyone

enjoys themselves. This is only the start of the Chinese New Year

celebrations which stretch on for a period of fifteen days.

Section I: Comprehension (10 marks)Read the passage carefully and answer the questions which follow.

My brother, sister and I love rainy days. We enjoy playing in the rain.

There is a shallow stream near our house. Each time it rains, we go

there to sail our paper boats and watch them being swept away. The

rain makes the water in the stream flow faster and it is exciting to

watch the swift currents flow over the stones, carrying away leaves,

grass and other refuse from our garden. We watch intently as our

paper boats are tossed around in the water. They then sail swiftly down

the stream and we often wonder where they finally end up.

When it is raining, we also like to sit and watch the puddles of water in

our garden. Sometimes, we throw stones into the puddles of water and

watch the ripples of water grow. The water looks like rings of silver as

the shining raindrops fall onto its surface.

Once in a while, we enjoy ourselves playing ball games in the rain. It is

fun, provided we do not catch a cold.

Every year, all schools celebrate Teachers' Day - a day to honour and

remember teachers who are leaders of students in their education.

Teachers are very much a part of a student's life as they influence a

child, right from kindergarten. It is they who prepare the child for his

or her life in society.

Page 103: English for Primary 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/english-for-primary-1 103/110 99

Teachers' Day is held to show appreciation to teachers who work hard

and who teach their pupils patiently. In most schools, pupils bring gifts

of flowers, presents and other tokens, which are sometimes hand-

made, to show that they care for their teachers. A party is held where

tasty refreshments and drinks are served in the classroom for both

the teachers and the students. Everyone has a good time and the day

ends earlier than usual.

Teachers play a very important role in the development of a child.

However, their efforts are seldom appreciated. That is why Teachers'

Day is so significant to teachers; it is only on this day that they are

appreciated and honoured for their deeds.

51. How often is Teacher’s Day celebrated?

52. Why do schools celebrate teacher’s day?
