ENGLISH In fourth grade, students will read a variety of literature, focusing on idenfying and understanding key ideas and details of a text. They will know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. Students will read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. Students will understand words and phrases as they are used in a text. In addion, they will idenfy the structure of a text and how it supports content. Furthermore, they will integrate knowledge and ideas from diverse texts. Students in fourth grade will develop different text types for a variety of purposes. They will produce clear and coherent wring in which the development and organizaon are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. This will be performed throughout the year over varying me frames. Students will also conduct short research projects, recall relevant informaon from diverse sources, and draw evidence from literary or informaonal texts to support analysis, reflecon, and research. Their wring incorporates the use of technology during development, collaboraon, and producon. Fourth graders will parcipate and engage effecvely in a range of collaborave discussions with diverse partners on grade four topics and text, building on others’ ideas, and expressing their own clearly. They will present knowledge and ideas effecvely and in a variety of formats. Students will also demonstrate command of the convenons of standard English. MATH In order to culvate an in-depth understanding of mathemacs, students focus on developing their process skills through mathemacal pracces. They make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, reason abstractly and quantavely, construct viable arguments and crique the reasoning of others. Students model with mathemacs and use appropriate tools strategically. They aend to precision, look for and make use of structure and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Process skills are the essenal elements for the mastering of math, and will be developed through the content shown below. In fourth grade, students recall from memory mulplicaon facts for numbers 1 to 10 and develop understanding and fluency using mul-digit mulplicaon. They also divide using mul-digit dividends. Students in fourth grade develop an understanding of fracon equivalence, addion and subtracon of fracons with like and unlike denominators, and mulplicaon of fracons by whole numbers. They use models and representaons to demonstrate the meaning of fracons as parts of a whole and parts of a set. Students develop an understanding of data analysis and probability to solve problems. Students collect, represent, and interpret data to present convincing arguments and model mathemacal situaons. Students develop an understanding of geometric concepts and relaonships to solve problems involving one-, two-, and three-dimensional figures using mathemacal language. Students analyze and describe the similaries and differences between and among two-dimensional geometric shapes, figures, and models. Students also analyze the relaonship between three-dimensional geometric shapes, such as cubes and cylinders. Life Science: Plant and Animal Structures; Informaon Processing. Earth Science: History of Planet Earth; Earth’s Materials and Systems; Plate Tectonics; Bio-geology; Natural Resources; Natural Hazards. Engineering &Technology: Define a simple design problem; Generate and compare possible soluons; Plan and conduct tests in which variables are controlled. SOCIAL STUDIES The fourth grade Social Studies curriculum has four main areas of study: History, Culture & Perspecve Geography, People and the Environment Economics, Innovaon & Technology Civics, Government and Human Rights Students in Grade 4 are introduced to a selecon of 18th and 19th century world events. Students idenfy causes of these events and make connecons between the past and present. They analyze economic change, gain a deeper understanding of polical systems, and learn the value of their role as cizens in society. Students are also presented with related geography content and skills. Students study the major factors which led to immigraon and migraon to the United States, and examine the mulcultural diversity of this naon. They develop global awareness through various acvies and research topics by gathering data from informaonal texts. Crical thinking opportunies also allow students to examine their world and learn through decision-making. PNL LÍNGUA PORTUGUESA 4 O programa desafia os alunos nos domínios: Comunicação Oral, Comunicação Escrita e Conhecimento Explícito da Língua, Análise e Reflexão, em três blocos disntos mas pressupondo uma práca integrada. Considera-se essencial que através do uso da Língua e da aprendizagem da Escrita e da Leitura, se mobilizem situações de diálogo, de cooperação e confronto de opiniões, se fomente a curiosidade de aprender, se descubra e se desenvolva, nas dimensões cultural, lúdica e estéca da Língua, o gosto de falar, ler e escrever. O ritmo de aprendizagem e os níveis de progressão serão os indicadores e os reguladores do processo de aprendizagem. A adoção desta perspeva contribuirá para que o aluno, na Língua em que pensa, fala, lê e escreve, construa a sua idendade e a sua relação com o mundo. Para fomentar o gosto pela Educação Literária, os alunos leem na sala de aula: Beatriz e o Plátano, Ilse Losa; Uma Aventura, Ana Maria Magalhães e Isabel Alçada. O manual ulizado é O Mundo da Carochinha 4 (Gailivro). MUSIC Grade 4 musicians focus on developing four arsc processes: Create, Perform, Respond, and Connect. Students implement previous musical skills both vocally and on instruments through choral singing and playing the recorder. Students also parcipate in drumming circles that enhance improvisaonal abilies as well as cultural and community awareness. Grade 4 students perform twice annually: the Winter Concert and the Fine Arts Fesval. IT INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY Technology is an integral part of the Fourth Grade Curriculum. Students develop acvies and projects fully integrated into all curricular areas by using LEGO construcon sets and laptops. An integraon specialist works collaboravely with Grade 4 teachers to plan, implement and assess relevant, age-appropriate projects. CAISL Acceptable Use Policy, internet safety, digital cizenship and technology issues are discussed at an age-appropriate level. PE PHYSICAL EDUCATION The fourth grade P.E. curriculum is designed to offer more responsibility to students in several dimensions. Students should be able to use their knowledge to improve performances, and if necessary/requested, provide feedback to others. Also healthy/fitness subjects and approach are focused at a higher level, so students can apply those contents in their pracces. Class climate should be a must, and kept by students adopng respectable atudes and pracces. PFL PORTUGUESE AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) is offered to students who are new to the language (except to those who are beginner ESL). This program will give students the opportunity to express themselves in Portuguese and understand the culture of Portugal. Students who complete the PFL program through the Advanced level are eligible to move into PNL (Portuguese as a Nave Language). During the transion, students will typically receive an Accommodaon Plan. ART Grade 4 arsts focus on developing four arsc processes: Create, Perform, Respond, and Connect. Constant focus remains on the elements of art and principles of design introduced and reinforced at various levels. Art projects will involve the students working from their imaginaon and observaon, primarily through drawing, painng and mixed media sculpture. Through their artwork, students arculate and demonstrate greater creavity and originality. ESL ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES English for Speakers of other Languages (ESL) is designed to teach students to become socially and academically competent in English. Students who demonstrate beginner and intermediate levels are designated as part of the program. Elementary ESL students are assessed and taught in two small separate groups according to their level of English. Listening, speaking, reading and wring skills are introduced and reinforced to achieve fluency. ESL teachers regularly monitor student progress during the year, as students improve, to modify the program according to student needs. This is done through work samples, observaons, and official tesng. Students are mainstreamed from ESL when they demonstrate an advanced proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and wring. On average, students are in the ESL program at CAISL for about 2 years, but this can vary depending on background in English and other factors. 4 TH GRADE
