Back to Basics contains guidelines and sample activity cards for use in classroom in addition to the text book and

other learning tools being used in the class.

The activity cards are designed in such a way that teachers can use them as a template for developing more

such activities for attaining the other learning indicators mentioned in the cards or by identifying the

learning objectives present in the lesson.

The learning material has been prepared for Hindi, English, EVS and Maths for Primary Classes i.e. Classes I-

V and in Hindi, Sanskrit, English, Science, Social Science and Mathematics for Classes VI-VIII.

The material has been prepared in such a way that the transition from one level to the next is smooth and

seamless. Care has also been taken to ensure integration of subjects wherever required.

3. Subject specific general instruction and guidelines are given in the beginning of each subjects which will

give additional inputs about how to administer the worksheets.

Level and subject wise learning indicators suggested by NCERT have been used as the base. Learning

indicators have been identified from each chapter/ unit of every subject and class, sample activities have

been developed to illustrate a particular learning indicator. Suggestions for more such activities and

pedagogical tools have also been given at the end of each card.

The worksheets also contain a short test item to assess the attainment of a learning outcome.

A Learner’s Achievement Test (LAT) to assess a student after completion of every three cards on the basis

of Bloom’s Taxonomy has also been given.

Test items being given in the LAT are cumulative in nature.

Sufficient copies of the cards should be made for use by teachers in the classroom. They should also be encouraged to use their creativity in making more such activity cards on the basis of the learning indicators. Teachers should be encouraged to incorporate learning outcomes, learning indicators, pedagogical tools and evaluation as per Back to Basics in their lesson planning.

Teaching Learning process should focus more on developing basic competencies, concepts and skills instead of teaching of the text book or completion of the course. Activities for children and by children should be allotted more time and teacher should act as a facilitator in the classroom. Participation by all students should be ensured and teacher should keep a record of participation and performance of students in classroom so that students who do not generally participate or perform well may be identified and remedial measures be planned for them.

Some activities to encourage students to think and ask questions should be incorporated in the lesson plan. Basic life skills like creative thinking, decision making, empathy, critical thinking, problem solving should also be incorporated in the classroom activities.

All knowledge, information, skills, competencies or concepts learnt in school are meant to be used in the world outside where children will have to deal with a variety of situations and problems. In situations outside the school, what they learn in different classes separately will need to be integrated and combined to solve issues that they will face outside the classroom. We need to train our children in the art of using their knowledge from different sources and integrating it to resolve issues they may face in society. Simultaneously we need to devise learning opportunities integrating various subjects so that children are aware that all learning is to prepare them for LIFE.

There are Missing Links in our classrooms and the children seem to be learning in a bubble- we need to devise

ways to link subjects- scholastic and co-scholastic and develop key competencies by using a variety of tools,

techniques and technology.

Children are living, breathing individuals who are rich in terms of knowledge, experiences and support systems,

these rich resources in the form of parents, family and society should be explored and incorporated in the

classroom for sharing and learning.

Focus should be on making students independent learners who can access and understand relevant

information, critically examine it and be able to apply it meaningfully in day to day situations- in brief they

should have the capability for LEARNING TO KNOW.

Activities that give learners an opportunity to create, work with their own hands, develop a sense of work ethics and dignity of labour should also be incorporated in the classroom lessons. This will give the ability of LEARNING TO DO.

Children should also possess the ability to willingly accept, appreciate and tolerate differences among people, life styles and cultures etc. They should be able to live, play, and work with others as a part of a team, group or community without losing awareness of their own culture, its limitations and strengths and be proud to be a part of the society. Children should be provided with opportunities for attaining the skill of LEARNING TO LIVE TOGETHER.

Learning events should be planned in such a way that children can learn to communicate, have a sense of self-esteem and confidence, basic values specific to their context, capacity to take independent decisions, have potential for creative expression, imagination, aesthetic appreciation and be able to adjust and cope with the world around them. These will enable children to LEARN TO BE.

Read the following story and answer the questions as given below:

There once was a King whose son was a dishonest telltale. This Prince would threaten to punish the servants if they ever let the King know this. One day, the King and the Prince left the castle together. They arrived at a village, at which point they separated. The Prince went back to his normal behaviour, getting on everyone's nerves, but the King returned unannounced and caught the Prince red-handed, up to his tricks. The Prince took advantage of the fact that in that village there was a youth who looked just like him. He told his father that it had been the youth who had done all these bad things. However, the King, seeing what a lying snitch this person was, concluded that the boy in the village must be his real son, the Prince. So the King took the boy back with him to the palace, and left the real Prince in the village. While there, the Prince finally came to regret his previous life filled with lies and accusations. The other young man heard of this, and decided to forgive the Prince. He confessed to the King that he wasn't his real son after all. The King left the castle and brought his son home, and the two young men ended up as inseparable friends. Once upon a time all the spirits set about building two palaces; a palace of truth, and a palace of lies. Every time a child told the truth, a brick was created for the palace of truth. The spirits of truth would then take it and add it to the growing walls. In just the same way was the palace of lies built. Each brick was created when a child told a lie. Both palaces were impressive - the best in the world - and each group of spirits worked hard to try to make sure that their own palace was the best. So much so that the lying spirits, who were much more tricky and deceitful, sent a group of spirits to the world to get children to tell more and more lies. These spirits were successful, and started getting many more bricks. As a result, their palace became bigger and more spectacular. But one day, something strange happened in the palace of lies. One of the bricks turned into a cardboard box. A little later another brick turned into sand, and then another turned into glass, and smashed. And so, little by little, it became clear that whenever a lie was discovered, the brick that it had created changed its form, was crushed, and finally disappeared. In this way, the palace of lies became weaker and weaker, and in the end it completely fell to pieces. At this, everyone, including the lying spirits, understood that you cannot use lies for anything. They are never what they appear to be, and so you never know what they will turn into.

Following the rejection of the recommendations of the Simon Commission by Indians, an all-party conference

was held at Bombay in May 1928. The conference appointed a drafting committee under Motilal Nehru to draw

up a constitution for India. The Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress asked the British government to

accord dominion status to India by December 1929, or a countrywide civil disobedience movement would be

launched. The Indian National Congress, at its historic Lahore session in December 1929, under the presidency of

Jawaharlal Nehru, adopted a resolution to gain complete independence from the British. It authorised the

Working Committee to launch a civil disobedience movement throughout the country. It was decided that 26

January 1930 should be observed all over India as the Purna Swaraj (complete independence) Day. Many Indian

political parties and Indian revolutionaries of a wide spectrum united to observe the day with honor and

pride.Gandhi emerged from his long seclusion by undertaking his most famous campaign, a march of about 400

kilometers from his commune in Ahmedabad to Dandi, on the coast of Gujarat between 12 March and 6 April

1930. The march is usually known as the Dandi March or the Salt Satyagraha. At Dandi, in protest against British

taxes on salt, he and thousands of followers broke the law by making their own salt from sea water.In March of

1931, the Gandhi-Irwin Pact was signed, and the government agreed to set all political prisoners free. In return,

Gandhi agreed to discontinue the civil disobedience movement and participate as the sole representative of the

Congress in the second Round Table Conference, which was held in London in September 1931. However, the

conference ended in failure in December 1931. Gandhi returned to India and decided to resume the civil

disobedience movement in January 1932.

Story of a great Indian Patriotic Legend

There was a boy of age 12 in the year 1918 during the freedom struggle. His name was Chandrashekhar Tiwari. Once the boy was sitting in the class. After some time he heard the slogans from outside. He took the permission from his teacher and went outside to see what was happening. He saw a sage leading some group. Then he came to know that it was a freedom movement. Suddenly there was a change in the situation. He saw some British officer attacked the crowd and hit the sage. This young patriotic boy who was observing all this was angry to see all this did not keep quiet. He took a stone in his hand and hit the British officer. The policemen attacked the boy to catch. But he escaped from the place. The next morning the police went to Chandrashekhar's school and arrested the young boy. He was submitted to court. The judge asked the boy to tell his name. The brave boy told his name as "Azad" which means freedom. The judge was shocked. He asked the boy to tell his father's name. The boy replied saying "Swadheenata". Then the judge with anger asked his last question,"Tell your address". The boy laughed and replied that he likes to be in jail and that was his permanent address. Then the judge gave him the punishment to beat the boy with the wet rope made up of leather by a fat healthy person 12 times. The boy told that it was a shame for his act to get only 12 so asked the judge to increase the punishment. But the judge refused and the boy was taken to the place where he should be beaten. There the boy was badly beaten. It was so hard that the boy's skin was tore. But the boy did not have tears but cried loudly "Vande Mataram". For every beat his voice increased. After the 12 beats the jailer returned the boy's dress. But the boy could not wear because the body was bleeding. The flesh had come out. He was given 12 paise to put bandage. The boy told to give the money to queen Victoria and tell her that it was given by a young Indian patriot as out. The boy was none other than the great legend "Chandrashekhar Azad".

A magician was working on a cruise ship in the Caribbean.

The audience would be different each week,

so the magician allowed himself to do the same tricks over and over again.

In a small town lives an old man named Mr. Benson. He lives alone. He has a big scar on his face that makes him look a little scary. No one talks to him, and no one helps him carry his things up the difficult stairs to his home. Mr. Benson does not have any friends. He is not married. But one day, a new family moves into the neighborhood. They are a nice couple, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence, and their children, Amanda and David. They move into the building where Mr. Benson lives. The other people who live in the building welcome the new family. They say hello to Amanda and David, but they tell them not to talk to Mr. Benson. "He is a scary old man. He has no friends and he has a strange scar." Amanda, David, and their parents think this is very silly advice. When they see Mr. Benson in the hallway or in the street outside their building, they always say hello with a smile and ask how he is feeling today. Mr. Benson is very happy to see them. He tells them they are always welcome in his home. He gives Amanda and David some delicious cupcakes to eat. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence always help Mr. Benson with his groceries, and Amanda and David like to sit and drink tea with him. He tells wonderful stories! He was once a very famous chef, and he makes the most delicious desserts in the whole world, in Amanda's opinion. One evening, all the neighbors in the building hear laughter and the sounds of cups and plates and silverware in Mr. Benson's apartment. They are very confused! It sounds like a delightful dinner. They all wonder why they are not invited. The next day, Mrs. Clarence talks to her neighbors. "You really must get to know Mr. Benson. He is so funny! And he is a fantastic chef. Barry is a middle-aged man who is going through a very difficult time in his life. His wife recently passed away. She

and Barry had many happy years together, sharing their free time and even starting a business together. Without

his wife, Barry is full of sorrow and feels that life is pointless. He even decides to close their business because

working there makes him miss her too much.

Even months later, Barry sits around in his house all day feeling gloomy. His friends and family try to get him out of

the house and encourage him to start doing new things and enjoy life, but they are not successful.

Barry's neighbor, a very old woman named Gertrude, sees him from her yard one day as he steps out onto his

porch. She has not seen him outside in days! She asks him to come closer. Irritated, he walks to the fence that

protects the front of her house. "Hello, Barry! Just look at this fence. I only had it put in two years ago, but it is

falling apart. You are a strong man, and you have some free time. I want you to fix this fence for me," Gertrude

says.Barry is angry. She knows the situation he is in. He is the one who needs help and support. He thinks the old

lady is being very selfish. Still, he knows she is too old to fix the fence herself, and they have been neighbors for

years. She is a nice woman, and he respects her. He agrees to fix her fence because it is really not safe for her to

have it broken like that. Barry works on the fence for days. Gertrude brings him lemonade while he works. When he

finishes, she is very grateful. Barry smiles for the first time in months.

"Now that you did such a wonderful job fixing my fence, do you think you could paint it for me?" Gertrude smiles at

him.Barry cannot believe she is asking for more help. Doesn't she know how sad he is? But because he respects her

so much, Barry agrees. He works hard painting the fence in the hot sun, but Gertrude's lemonade and

encouragement are wonderful. He feels proud of the beautiful fence he is making. Over the next few weeks,

Gertrude keeps giving Barry jobs. He repairs her door and even builds a beautiful patio with wooden furniture for

her. As they sit there and drink lemonade, all the neighbors pass by and tell Berry what a beautiful job he has done.

He and Gertrude cannot stop smiling.Barry no longer feels that life is pointless. He feels proud of his work and

useful to Gertrude. And he is still young, he thinks. Barry decides he will become a carpenter! He thanks Gertrude.

He finally realizes that she was never being rude, she is really very wise. She knew that sorrow can be eased by

simply getting busy at something. He helped her, but she truly saved him.

Kharanakhara was a lion who ruled over a certain part of a jungle.

One day, he could not prey upon a single animal after wandering around the jungle in search of food. It was

almost sunset, and the lion started returning in spite of being very hungry.

On his way, he saw a big cave, and thought to himself, "It is for sure that some animal must be living in this big

cave. Such a nice cave cannot be un-inhabitated. At sunset, whatever animal lives here is bound to return. I shall

hide inside the cave and wait for my dinner to arrive."

The cave was the home to a jackal, who arrived a while after the lion had hidden himself inside. While entering

he noticed the footprints of the lion leading into the cave, but could not find any footprint coming out.

He thought, "If a lion is indeed entered, I will be dead as soon as I enter. But, how can I be sure? There is no

reason for me to stay away from my home if there is no lion inside. I must find out a way to confirm if the lion is

still inside."

The jackal thought of a plan, and standing in front of the cave, began to shout, "Hello Cave! Hello Cave! Can I

come inside?"

For some moment, he waited in silence and shouted again, "Hello Cave! Have you forgotten our understanding

of all these years? I always wait for your reply before I enter. Why are you silent today? I shall then go to some

Enjoy that uniqueness. You do not have to pretend in

order to seem more like someone else. You weren’t meant

to be like someone else. You do not have to lie to conceal

Once upon a time, there was a selfish man. He liked everything to be his own. He could not share his

belongings with anyone, not even his friends or the poor.

One day, the man lost thirty gold coins. He went to his friend’s house and told him how he lost his gold coins. His

friend was a kind man. As his friend’s daughter was coming from an errand she found thirty gold coins. When

she arrived home, she told her father what she had found. The girl’s father told her that the gold coins belong to

his friend and he sent for him. When the selfish man arrived, he told him how his daughter had found his thirty

gold coins and handed then to him.

After counting the gold coins the man said that ten of them was missing and had been taken by the girl as he

had forty gold coins. He further commented that he will recover the remaining amount from him. But the girl’s

father refused. The man left the gold coins and went to the court and informed the judge there about what had

taken place between him and the girl’s father. The judge sent for the girl and her father and when they arrived

asked the girl how many gold coins did she find. She replied thirty gold coins. The Judge that asked the selfish

man how many gold coins did he lose and he answered forty gold coins.

The judge then told the man that the gold coins did not belong to him because the girl found thirty and not forty

as he claimed to have lost and then told the girl to take the gold coins and that if anybody is looking for them he

will send for the girl. The judge told the man that if anybody reports that they have found forty gold coins he will

send for him. It was then that the man confessed that he lied and that he lost thirty gold coins but the judge did

not listen to him. This story teaches us to be always honest as dishonest never pays.

Read the given story and listen to its audio version and answer the questions that are given below:

Once upon a time all the spirits set about building two palaces; a palace of truth, and a palace of lies. Every time

a child told the truth, a brick was created for the palace of truth. The spirits of truth would then take it and add it

to the growing walls.

In just the same way was the palace of lies built. Each brick was created when a child told a lie. Both palaces

were impressive - the best in the world - and each group of spirits worked hard to try to make sure that their

own palace was the best. So much so that the lying spirits, who were much more tricky and deceitful, sent a

group of spirits to the world to get children to tell more and more lies. These spirits were successful, and started

getting many more bricks. As a result, their palace became bigger and more spectacular.

But one day, something strange happened in the palace of lies. One of the bricks turned into a cardboard box. A

Read and answer the questions given below: Brian is a very silly, funny student. What he loves most is to make people laugh. All his friends love his jokes, and even the teachers think he is very funny. Brian knows that comedy is what he likes best. When he hears about the school's talent show, he decides to sign up so that he can share his comedy from the stage. He has never done real stand-up comedy before, and he is very excited. But when some of the students find out he will participate, they laugh at him. Brian thinks it does not feel very good when someone laughs at you in a mean way! "You are not funny," the students tell him. "You will do a terrible job. No one will like what you do!" Brian cannot understand why they are being so unkind to him. For a moment, he thinks about telling the talent show organizers he will not participate. But then he remembers how much his friends and teachers like his jokes. He does not know why these other students are being so negative, but he decides to go ahead and prepare his comedy routine for the talent show. Brian decides to do a great job at the talent show to prove to the mean students that they are wrong. Everyone loves his routine, and he wins first prize! Even so, the same students tell Brian he is dumb and that he will never be a successful comedian. Brian just shakes his head and wonders what their problem is. He does not understand, but he realizes that it has nothing to do with him. He happily continues to work towards his goal. As the years go on, Brian meets more people like that. Luckily, they are the minority, and as he works hard to become a comedian, most of the people he meets encourage him and help him to become even funnier. He gets more and more opportunities to perform, and he is even invited to appear on television and act in movies. His fans thank him for making them laugh, and they tell him that his comedy makes them feel better when they are sad. He likes to tell funny stories in his acts about how hard he had to work and overcome the silly, nasty things people said to him along the way. He never listened to them, and now he is a big comedy star! He followed his heart to flourish and prosper doing what he loves the most. And he really thinks he chose the best career in the world. He never feels stressed like those negative people, and he laughs all day long!
