English Curriculum Area – Departmental Newsletter: Spring 2019

Welcome to the final edition of our English Curriculum Area Newsletter, we hope that you have
found the information useful. As a very busy and productive year draws to a close, we have had lots
to celebrate, including:
Continuation of the Key Stage 3 Master Class project with Mrs Abson and Mr Kilkenny
hosting the last two sessions before the summer.
All Year 10 have completed the Speaking and Listening component of their GCSE English
Language qualification – the standard was exceptional throughout. Students will receive
their grades before the summer and the awards will be published in the first edition of this
newsletter in the autumn term of 2019.
Very successful visits to the Cheshire Book Awards (see below), Blood Brothers at Salford
Lowry and War Horse at the Regent Theatre.
In this edition of the newsletter you will find some key information, especially if you are a parent of a
student who will be entering Year 10 and Year 11 in September. As always, if there is anything you
are unsure of, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with your child’s teacher via email or the planner.

Key Stage 3
At the end of June, four of our keenest readers (Demi Cornes, Lydia Williams, Matilde Hinds and
Erica Brinsden) attended the final of the prestigious ‘Cheshire Book Awards’. Throughout the year,
each member of the group read the five shortlisted books and then voted for their favourite. Tom
Palmer was the overall winner, although our team were hoping that Stewart Foster would win. The
team are pictured below meeting Stewart and Matt Killeen, one of the other nominees. Thanks to
Miss Loveland and Mrs Adderley for organising the group all year.
Accelerated Reader Millionaires’ Club: all these students have read over 1 million words this year

Year 7-10: End of year Examinations
Well done to all the students in Years 7-10 for their very mature and motivated approach to the end
of year examination season. Years 7&8 both did a creative writing piece in the style of the GCSE
English Language examination, while Years 9 & 10 got their first taste of what a full GCSE exam paper
might look like! As a Curriculum Area we’d also like to thank all the parents and carers that
supported their students with revision and preparation, your help and support is very much
appreciated.

Current Year 10: Shakespeare text choices for Year 11
Thank you for your support this year in ensuring that your child has
their own copy of each of the texts that we study for GCSE English
Literature. In September all current Year 10 students will start Year 11 by beginning their study of a Shakespeare text for GCSE, and we
wanted to give you plenty of notice as to which play they will be studying so that you can obtain a copy over the summer break.
The class/text allocations are below, along with the teachers' preferred editions. If you have any difficulty obtaining a copy please let me know
and we will do whatever we can to assist you. As always, students in receipt of Pupil Premium funding will be supplied with one by the school
(unless you prefer otherwise of course):

In our lessons we will be using filmed versions of the play from Shakespeare’s Globe – digital copies
are available if your child brings in a memory stick (you will need around 3GB of space due to the file
size).

Year 9 into 10 – Preparation Work for GCSE poetry
At the start of Year 10, all students will begin their study of the GCSE poetry anthology. They will
study 15 poems clustered around one of two themes: ‘Power & Conflict’ or ‘Love & Relationships’.
Groups will be confirmed in September but teachers have chosen their poetry clusters; the theme
your child will be studying can be found below, as well as the preparation work for each one.
Power & Conflict
To begin your study of the Power and Conflict poetry cluster,
research ideas based around the title of ‘Power and Conflict’
and create a poster/mind-map to present your findings. Make sure your information is presented clearly and in an interesting
way - this can be in any way that works for you!
You should use the following themes to guide your research: -Conditions in WWI
-Conflict and war in other countries
-The effects of war on people who aren’t soldiers (e.g. family members left behind)
-Other types of conflict (e.g. immigration, terrorism, dictatorship)
Additional challenge: Find out examples of nature being more powerful than humans (natural disasters might be an interesting place to start) - how might this fit into the title of Power and Conflict'? Add your findings to your poster.
Love & Relationships
To begin your study of the Love and Relationships poetry cluster, research ideas based around the title of 'Love and
Relationships' and create a poster/mind-map to present your findings. Make sure your information is presented
clearly and in an interesting way - this can be in any way
that works for you!
You should use the following themes to guide your research:
-Romantic Love
-Desire and longing -Family love (including love between parent and child)
-Loss and distance in relationships
Additional challenge: Research ideas about 'Romanticism' - how might this fit into the title of 'Love and Relationships'? Add your findings to your poster.
