THE GERUND This looks exactly the same as a present

participle, and for this reason it is now common to call both forms

'the -ing form'. However it is useful to understand the difference between the two. The gerund always has the same function as a noun (although it looks like a verb), so it can be used:

a. as the subject of the sentence: Eating junk food is bad for your health. Hunting tigers is dangerous. Flying makes me nervous. Smoking costs a lot of money.

Complete the sentences with the gerund form of the verbs in parentheses.

(cook) is one of her hobbies. (cycle) is fun. (Get) a good job is not easy. (Find) a parking space is quite

difficult in this area. (drive) becomes more and more

expensive.

company. Eating fruits and vegetables is good for your

health. Making fun of other people is not nice. Learning about other cultures makes people

more tolerant.
