1. REPORT OUTLINE

1.1. Introduction

This route feasibility study is concerned with the proposed transport route for the delivery of the Transformer.

A vertical analysis, swept path analysis and tractive effort calculation have been carried out to highlight any

problematic areas along the route. This report does not cover any structures on the route or tree trimming

required.

1.2. Summary

No issues have been identified with the route relating to trailer clearance on ascents, break overs or descents.

There is only one identified location where the trailer is showing its full suspension stroke utilised but this is

deemed to be OK. Trailer tracking has highlighted the need for a parking restriction to be in place for the

move but no other issues have been identified.

2. REPORT OUTLINE

2.1. Definition of Abnormal Indivisible Load (AIL)

The Department of transport, of which the Highways Agency (HA) is an executive agency, state that the strict

definition of an AIL refers to a load which cannot, without undue expense or risk of damage, be divided into two or

more loads for the purpose of carriage on roads which, owing to its dimensions or weight, cannot be carried on a

vehicle which complies in all respect with the ‘standard vehicle regulations’ these are:

The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 (as amended)

The Road Vehicles (Authorised Weight) Regulations 1998 (as amended)

The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 (as amended)

All equipment should be stripped of their ancillaries before they are transported. The HA will only accept that

further dismantling is not required where it cannot be economically achieved due to the requirement for its

construction within factory environments or where extremely high tolerances have to be maintained.

2.2. Legislation

Conventional heavy goods vehicles have an operating weight limit of 44 tonnes. The category known as

Abnormal Indivisible Loads (AIL) covers those vehicles where the gross weight exceeds 44 tonnes. An Abnormal

Load is defined as that which cannot be carried under Construction and use (C&U) Regulations.

Items which, when loaded on the load carrying vehicle exceed the weights encompassed by the C&U regulations,

but do not exceed Special Order Permission Limits are governed by Special Types General Order (STGO)

categories 1 to 3 depending on size. Where dimensions exceed 6100mm in width, 30000mm in rigid length or 150

tonnes gross weight, Special Order from the Highways Agency (HA), is required.

Special Order category AIL movements are authorized by the Highways Agency (HA) Abnormal Loads team, An

executive agency of the Department for Transport (DfT, based in Birmingham)

The following points on the first part of this route have been identified as potentially problematic areas where

there is a noticeable change in the routes gradient i.e. start of an ascent, crest (break over), or the end of a

descent to check that the trailer being used is suitable. To make sure that the trailer is suitable the ground

clearance and suspension stroke have been assessed. Maximum suspension stroke differential is 260 mm.

In summary there are no issues with the proposed route. There is only one identified location where the trailer

reaches full suspension stroke but this has been deemed OK. There is no time where the ground clearance of the

trailer is not sufficient.

7. SWEPT PATH ANALYSIS

Swept path analysis has been carried out along the full route using specialised trailer tracking.

Various pinch points have been identified along the route, these are covered in the following drawings. There

are no points of concern though, the route is suitable for the proposed transport.

It may be necessary to plate the verge at the turning in to the Power Station.

A tractive effort calculation has been carried out (page 23) to ensure that one tractor unit will have sufficient

traction. This confirms that one tractor is OK and extra ballast tractors are not required.

In summary we see no issues with the route for the proposed transport.
