ENGINEERING HERITAGE SA CONFERENCE

Page 3: Engineering South Australia, January 2012

2www.engineersaustralia.org.au/sa

I recently attended the AGM for Engineers Australia in Canberra. This was a special event in which Engineers Australia acknowledged both Honorary Fellows and the recipient of the Peter Nicol Russell medal, Engineers Australia’s highest honour. I extend my congratulations to Professor Andrew Downing who received this special honour. Andrew is a proud engineer and proud South Australian who has been both the SA Division and National President. The award is just recognition of Andrew’s contribution to our profession.

One of the Honorary Fellow recipients, Tony Dawson, made an impact on me. He has spent the majority of his career working for a consulting engineering firm and in receiving his award he drew attention to the experiences and opportunities that he had been given as a young engineer. The gift to a young engineer of the opportunity to solve problems and the drive of that young engineer to take the challenge is what produces the future leaders of our profession. Tony spoke of the opportunity coupled with the independence given to him to work independently. His comments were met with loud applause from the young engineers in the room and they prompted me to think back to the opportunities I have been given, opportunities that have made me the engineer I am today.

I have had some great engineers to learn from over my career and they have all had one thing in common, the willingness to allow me to give things a go. From my first day in the office I was given space to work things out and try and find a solution, but always with support and always being able to ask a question and access the experience of those who were my supervisors. After working for 3 years I was given the opportunity to run the Mt Gambier office for a few months and, despite it occurring at a time that was very hard for our family, it proved one of the best opportunities I have had. From taking this opportunity on and succeeding, other opportunities followed. Ultimately, it has lead to me being South Australian Young Professional Engineer of the Year and the Managing Director of one of Adelaide’s consulting firms. I can’t thank enough the engineers who gave me those opportunities.

Now as a manager, I am faced with the challenge of making sure I provide opportunities for others to grow and become great engineers. It has proved a difficult challenge, as in giving someone an opportunity you take on a risk, the risk that the project won’t be done as well as you might have hoped, or the risk that there may be some damage to your reputation. However, I firmly believe it is a risk worth taking. The young engineers of today will grow from the opportunities they are provided and the profession as a whole will grow from seeing how they take on the challenges.

I have also watched the new graduates I work with struggling with just how to take on the challenges that the opportunities to learn provide. Again, taking on a challenge comes with a risk, and the risk to the new graduate is that the challenge is more than they believe they are capable of meeting. However, I have seen that whenever they take the first step they go on to achieve great things. Of course, having an environment of support and a no blame culture are important ingredients together with the fact that there will always be experienced senior people there to help out are essential if new graduates are to gain confidence.

I believe the same is true of raising children. I am grateful to my parents, they gave me opportunities, believed I could succeed but also left it to me to make it happen. All the while, they were close enough that should I not be coping they were available. On many occasions my parents would drive me around the state for sporting events and let me do my thing, but the drive to train, to get better and to achieve what I wanted always had to come from me. I am now a father to five little boys and am acutely aware of the need to teach them that they are responsible for their own lives and that their success will be determined by their ability and willingness to rise to the challenges life throws them. I also need to be their biggest fan and supporter.

As the 2011 South Australian Young Professional Engineer of the Year, I attended the Australian Engineering Excellence Awards. On the night Emma Charlton, of the Queensland Division was successful in becoming the 2011 Young Professional Engineer of the Year and my congratulations go to her. The award concept did prompt discussion around our table about what made us proud. For me, it was not a personal achievement but the achievements of my children; my 2 eldest children are both remarkable people and have already been honoured at their school for the character they display. Teaching my kids and working with my colleagues to grow them into leaders of the future, but also people of character, is my ambition.

I finish with a challenge, whether you are just starting out or closing in on the finish line as a member of the engineering team or as a parent, I challenge you to take opportunities, give opportunities, take risks and grow through all life’s challenges.

Qualification: MSc Nuclear Engineering, Royal Navy College, Greenwich, UK

Current position: Managing Director and CEO, ASC, Adelaide As both a trained Mechanical and Nuclear Engineer, I hold a Master of Science from Royal Naval College, Greenwich, am a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineers, Fellow of Engineers Australia and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Until December 2009, I was with Rolls Royce in the United Kingdom. During this time I held a variety of roles, including senior positions for the company, holding responsibilities in Europe and the United States. My last role was as President – Submarines, a role in which I had full accountability of the company’s submarine business.

I have managed the design and construction of all kinds of vessels and ship equipment, particularly nuclear submarines, diesel submarines and major surface combatants in the United Kingdom, Europe, America and Australia.

Successive leadership roles also required stakeholder engagement with numerous government and non government organisations. I have been a key stakeholder in a number Defence strategic change programs, having strong relationships with the Ministry of Defence, the Department of Defence, the Defence Materiel Organisation and major industry throughout the United Kingdom, Australia, continental Europe and the United States.

Joining ASC as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer in January 2010, I currently manage over 1,700 employees at the Commonwealth owned company that is building three air warfare destroyers and maintaining Australia’s fleet of Collins Class submarines.

This role requires me to lead, collaborate, fight for, and challenge the people of ASC. I am building a vision and a business plan for the company spanning the next 50 years.

Since joining ASC, my focus is on strong leadership and increased efficiency and effectiveness.

The first signs of the success of this approach were evident in the increase of revenue for ASC in the 2009/10 financial year reaching $515.7 million, up almost 47% on the previous year. In the last 12 months we have also seen an increase in labour efficiency of 60 percent.

Leadership My path to becoming a leader has been relatively conventional, working my way up the ranks, seeking ‘counsel’ from a variety of experienced and successful people in my industry, company and customer base. I find that a variety of ideas and views leads to a better balance of approaches and decisions.

My role is about constantly building the confidence of this team and building individual leadership qualities so employees put their hand up when they’ve made a mistake or understand the implications of a poor decision.

I have to prepare the emergence of the new generation of leader in the Australian defence industry. Men and women who have the skills to work in both construction

MEMBER PROFILEMatthew Stead MIEAust CPEngWhy did you decide to become an engineer?

I became an engineer because of the opportunity to come up with ideas, calculate, design and then see things happen. Luckily I was able to do this in acoustical consulting which interested me because of the technical nature of acoustics and the wide range of industries in which I work.

What do you like the most about the engineering profession?

I like the engineering profession because it is filled with people who are creative, innovative and have the skills to engineer solutions to help our world.

If you could have worked on any engineering project, throughout history, what would you choose?

The Sydney Opera House because it is iconic and is not known for its good acoustics. I could have helped to improve this landmark building.

What do you see as one of the biggest issues facing the engineering profession?

I don’t believe that the engineering profession has successfully communicated to the broader community what we do and as a consequence we are often undervalued. If we were better valued then science and engineering may have greater sway in decision making (rather than popular politics).

What is the greatest piece of technology released in the last decade?

Web based social media and knowledge sharing is the greatest technology released in the last decade. I believe this has and will shape and improve our world both in improved communities and better outcomes

from knowledge shared.

Why are you an Engineers Australia member?

I am a member because I believe that each day we should make the engineering profession better. The way I think we should do this is by working together.

If you could take a year off to study anything, what would it be?

I would love to study the health and economics of acoustics and the value that acoustics provides (related to our health and economically) to our world.

What do you feel is the engineering professions strongest asset?

The solid foundation of logical decision making.

What are your hobbies?

I am a keen cyclist & coffee drinker (& red wine ..)

What is your motto?

Give knowledge freely.

What would be your ideal working holiday?

A world tour testing and cataloguing the environmental noise in cities and the natural environment.

Who would you most like to meet?

I would most like to meet Sir Isaac Newton and ask him how he achieved all his revolutionary theories.
