Engine Fuel Management

• Effective Marine Fuel Management requires that you know…• How much fuel is used• How the fuel was used • What things impact fuel use• And by how much

Engine Fuel Management Issues Engine Fuel Management Issues

Pressure to Reduce Fuel Costs where possible

Driven by:

• Volatile fuel prices• Environmental issues• Desire to improve efficiency• Inability to budget cost of voyages• Unauthorized offloading of fuel to “Black Market”

Fuel Management Issues

Incorporating Coriolis meters on engine fuel allows user to determine accurate consumption– Accurate fuel measurement is the baseline for determining fuel efficiency– Greater than 1% accuracy can be achieved on fuel consumption when applying

meters on engine fuel feed and return– When combined with other variables can determine

• Optimized throttle control • Hull fouling

– Can aid in determining when fuel additives are required– Allows for comparison of performance of different crews

Fuel Management Issues

Inability to Accurately Schedule Preventative Engine Maintenance for Operational Efficiency

Driven by:• Inability to accurately measure fuel consumption• Currently based on engine run-time (idle vs. actual voyage)• Need to schedule maintenance and overhaul dates• Coordination of repair with operations and port of call

Fuel Management Issues

Incorporating Coriolis meters on engine fuel allows user to determine accurate consumption– Fuel Feed and fuel return meters can accurately determine engine fuel

consumption– When combined with other variables can determine engine performance for

predictive maintenance – Allows for better comparison of port and starboard engine performance– Provides critical data to engineering for future analysis

Engine Fuel Control Technologies Used Today

– Turbine and PD sensors today– Fuel flow measurements– Errors with current technologies???– Maintenance concerns with turbine meters• plugging

Note: Coriolis meters will not block the flow even if the meter fails.Critical for control and steering of the ship
