From the Director’s Desk….
February days are a marketing
gimmick; love happens every day.
~ Randeep Hooda
Ah, February. Regardless of whether the Ground Hog sees
his shadow, I’m thinking we still have six more weeks of
winter. I, for one, have already had enough cold and snow
for one year. Yet, there truly is beauty and a sense of purity
looking out on newly fallen snow.
Sometimes, when it’s cold outside, it seems too much of an
effort to go out. Yet, recent studies have shown that social
isolation is like smoking 15 cigarettes a day in terms of the
detrimental effects on one’s health. Conversely, being with
others has lots of health benefits. So, I encourage you to find
ways to get out of the house these last weeks of winter,
especially. We hope to see you at the Center often.
Something new that’s coming up in February is the return of
Brain Aerobics. Classes will be held at 10:00 a.m. on
Mondays and will be led by Michelle Gessner. Recent
studies have shown that brain aerobics is one way to
improve memory and delay the onset of dementia. Pretty
cool. Other ways — eating healthy, exercising, and
meditation/stress reduction — are also helpful in improving
brain functions. All of these are available right here at the
Monroe Center!
Financially, we ended the year in the black — thanks to the
wonderful support we received from so many of you. Our
activity units were up 4.7% and the hours spent at the
Center were up 6%. We are delighted to see this growth and
encourage you to invite your friends.
Thanks for making the Center the place to be for fun,
fellowship and support. Your kindness and concern for
others is impressive. Thanks for all you do and for the joy
you bring to others.
- Sandie

Monroe Family YMCA to Offer Complimentary Fitness Class at Center
The Monroe Family YMCA will again be offering an Enhance®Fitness exercise class at the Monroe Center starting on
Tuesday, February 20. This community partnership was made possible by a grant received by the Community Foundation of
Monroe County to improve the quality of health in Monroe County,
including increasing access to fitness programs for seniors.
There will be one session offered; classes will meet for 60 minute sessions, 3 times a week — Tuesdays and Thursdays from
11:30 am – 12:30 pm and Saturdays from 10 – 11 am. All classes are held at the Center.
The aim of the free, 16 week program is to help participants feel better, and gain
strength, flexibility, and balance. In addition, some participants report sleeping better, as well as feeling more happy and independent. Participants set their own goals, and whether
standing, sitting, or holding onto a chair for support, the instructor works with each
participant at their own pace.
To sign up for a spot in this free class, please call (734) 241-0404 or sign up at the
front desk of the Monroe Center.

Be Inspired by Auggie in our February Movie “Wonder”
Auggie Pullman suffers from a severe facial deformity that has prevented him from attending
a regular school. However, he is set to start a traditional school for the start of his fifth
grade year. As his teachers and peers struggle to
accept him, Auggie teaches them that he was born
to make a difference. He doesn't let his deformity
define who he is and who he will become. His
attitude and zest for life teaches others about
acceptance and the uniqueness of every individual. (movie description: www.dvdreleasedates.com)

From RSVP….Love Your Heart!
It’s American Heart Month
According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the
leading cause of death for both men and women, but heart disease is preventable and
controllable. Some health conditions and lifestyle factors can put people at a higher risk for developing heart
disease. We can help prevent heart disease by making healthy choices and managing any medical conditions
you may have.
Check out the tips below courtesy of the CDC:
● Eat a healthy diet. Choosing healthful meal and snack options can help avoid heart disease and its
complications. Be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables; adults should have at least five
servings each day. Eating foods low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol and high in fiber can help
prevent high cholesterol. Limiting sodium can also lower your blood pressure.
● Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese can increase the risk for heart disease.
● Exercise regularly. Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight and lower cholesterol and
blood pressure. The Surgeon General recommends adults engage in moderate-intensity exercise for two hours
and 30 minutes every week (aim for at least 30 minutes each day).
● Monitor your blood pressure. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, so be sure to have it checked
on a regular basis. You can check your blood pressure at home, at a pharmacy, or at a doctor's office.
● Don't smoke. Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease. If you don't smoke, don't
start. If you do smoke, quit as soon as possible. Your doctor can suggest ways to help you quit.
● Limit alcohol use. Avoid drinking too much alcohol, which can increase blood pressure. Men should stick
to no more than two drinks per day, and women to no more than one.
● Have your cholesterol checked. Your health care provider should test your cholesterol levels at least once
every five years. Talk with your doctor about this simple blood test.
● Manage your diabetes. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar levels closely, and talk with your
doctor about treatment options.
● Take your medicine. If you're taking medication to treat high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes,
follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Always ask questions if you don't understand something.

From the Program Manager….
This morning at the Center, we were joking about the January “heat wave” we are
experiencing. Just last week, it was –4 degrees when I drove into work. Today
when I came in my car dashboard said 34 degrees! That’s a 40 degree increase in
temperature! It’s still winter in Michigan, but it is definitely nicer outside. I have
a feeling that the cold stuff will be back soon. To the person who invented the
remote car starter, I give my deepest thanks!
One of the downsides of winter is that some of us tend to “hibernate” and not go out unless we absolutely have
to. If you can get out, please join us at the Monroe Center for breakfast, our noon meal, or dinner three nights
a week. Sometimes getting out of your house or apartment is just what you need to perk up a bit. If you are
concerned about walking across the parking lot on a cold day, please pull your car up to the front door and ask
the Center staff for valet parking. We are glad to park your car for you.
If you can’t get out, please remember we do deliver meals to Mable Kehres Apartments and Town Houses.
You don’t have to be a member to get our meals (although members get a discount) and we do deliver our
evening meals as well. On weekends, we also deliver meals to Frenchtown Place, Creekside Village, and
RiverPark Place. Take advantage of the delicious meals our Kitchen Staff prepares.
If you’d like to stay up to date with happenings at the Monroe Center, I encourage you to
like us on Facebook. The staff strives to put daily updates on Facebook, including the
evening meal, upcoming activities, and pictures from special events. You’ll find us at
“Monroe Center for Healthy Aging.” In addition, if you prefer, you can receive your
monthly newsletter by email. This is a great option for those who go someplace warm for
part of the winter. It lets you stay connected to us. Please submit your email address to
[email protected] for this option.
Stay warm and safe. Spring (and baseball season) will be here soon, I promise!
