An introduction to college-level writing as a process of

drafting, revising, and editing. This course emphasizes

critical reading, writing, thinking, and research skills asstudents write for a variety of audiences and purposes.

Students will receive guided instruction in the writing

process as they begin writing based on personal

experiences. An introduction to proper crediting of source

material and research will occur toward the end of the

course.

Through writing from personal experience and reading

examples of others self-discovery, students will develop

their ability to read, think, and write critically by applying

knowledge, skills, and abilities gained through guided

practice and teamwork, inside and outside the classroom.

This course contributes most directly to the Liberal Arts

Program outcome involving communication. Reading and

writing exercises will be completed to assess student

ability in those areas.

---Not ALL assignments will be completed/introduced on eCompanion. Many assignments will be

required to be handed in physically; this is not an online class. Emailing your instructor an

assignment in order to skip class will not be allowed.

---Students will not be allowed to use computer problems or the lack of internet access OR the

loss/deterioration of a USB as an excuse as to why their work is late. They are responsible for

backing up their work; this means saving it to a USB AND emailing it to ones email account.

---Emails to the instructor must be error-free in order to earn a response.

---All projects must be typed. Students may be asked to type some small assignments, as well.

47.In high school, we learned that there are some

people who have 47 chromosomes (those with

Down Syndrome); other non-special people

have the basic 46 chromosomes 23 from each

parent.

Once I learned about this, and began to have

a fascination with prime numbers, I started using

it for many things. Even though I went into

English Education, I carried over my love of

numbers and math from my first major

Architecture.

At this point, I use that number in passwords, it

was part of my teaching blogs name

Thirty-Six.I probably subscribe to too many womens

magazines, but there was one awhile back

that did an article on famous women andwhat they looked like at the age of thirty-six.

The argument of the article was that manyof them looked their very, very best at that

age; it was also arguing that youth the

twenties, mostly was not always the bestbeauty times for all people. I recall

Marilyn Monroe being on this list as well as

Jennifer Aniston, Audrey Hepburn, etc.

Thus far, being 36 this year has been

awesome sauce. Ive lost weight andpublished my first book.

1,3,5 and 7.I love odd numbers, especially those that areprime.

When I have to t ip waitresses and waiters, Ilike to do it in odd numbers. This makes iteasier to fill out those slips, too. If the b illcomes to $32.50, Ill throw $35 or $37 on thecharge slip, depending on quality of service.

Thirty-Three Dollars/Hour.

Years ago, my sister & I were joking aroundabout how much money wed like to makesomeday.

She said, Someday, Id like to make$33/hour.We laughed.

I thought aloud, I wonder what I make perhour IF I only count the hours I am in the

classroom?I did the math for a minute, and then got aheadache.I grabbed my phone to use its calculator.Holy crap. If I ONLY count the hours Im inthe classroom, I do make about $33/hour.

My sisters eyes got really big.Then she said, Well, its too bad you dont

just get paid for that and thats it.Yep. There are too many other hours in aweek that screw up that number, I replied.

Bummer.

!"##$Yes, I was born in the seventies. I have a

picture of myself attempting, at the age of 4

or 5, to do some disco moves which means

that disco didnt leave North Dakota until the

early 80s.

I sometimes wish I wouldve been born a little

earlier because Im still intrigued by the hippie

movement, and even the beat movement of

the 50s. Then again, I dont think livingthrough Vietnam wouldve been ideal. My

dad was stationed in Germany during that

conflict, and Im glad he wasnt ever other

there too many men came back with that

agent orange in their systems.

I suppose a person can guess, by reading all

these little numbers-based stories, that I

appreciate having been born in an odd year

(and another prime! 77!). And, its true; I do

appreciate it.

Plus, my birth month is a 1 and my birthdate is

an odd person.

The 52 Chevy.My godfather had a 1952 Chevy truck that he sold mydad for $1952. It was originally gray in color, and sinceone in town would touch it, my dad painted it himself. Ita cherry red now, and it might be the most beautifulpickup ever.

1.Busy Bees in a Big, Busy Hive.

Teachers are typically on our feet for a big chunkof the day.

On any given day, I will sit at my computer forabout an hour before teaching. I prep my heartout before bundling up or packing up or both. Ifmy class is in the building, I still have to carry abunch of stuff. If I have to trek across campus,

that means even more calories burned(especially if its 30 below). And if its one of

those days when Im handing back assignments,thats at least 3-5 pounds of strength training,

right? Im about to bench press 15lbs of papers,dude.

Up the stairs of various buildings is the cardio.Once in the classroom, I rarely sit. Maybe on the

first day, Ill lean against the front desks that noone sits at. Otherwise, Im standing or pacing or

squatting to assist a student at the desk. Thisoccurs for about an hour, up to 5 times a day.

Yeah.

Three Months Off.Typically, I frown when people respond to myoccupation with, Oh, so you have summers off.But, really, I have no excuse not to stay inshape with that time off, do I?

If I had a 12-month teaching job, Id be uberactive, so why not continue the pace with,perhaps, better activities. Like swimming andbiking things where carrying books anddealing with crabby students doesnt exist! Witheven more time on my hands, I should beactive, and I am. I think I have spent at least

70% of my travel this summer on a bike (intown). I mean, really, in a small town likeWahpeton, I should be able to get to mostplaces as quickly on a bike as in a car.Duh.

3. Stress Makes One a MeI do believe that the teaching profession is up the

in the statistics when it comes to careers with most suicides. Along with dentists. Sucke

Anyhow, I think that that is connected to the stressdealing with young minds that are rebellious, amoother stresses (students parents, etc.). So while and #2 above are obvious reasons, this #3 could

either way diet-wise. We all know those who eat undpressure or, yes, eat just to eat because they like

eat and blame it on their kids or sweet tooLuckily, when I get stressed, I eat less and nap mo

And by nap, I mean power nap for over two hourseven if my stomach is howling the national anthem ame and sounds like Barry White. It happened incollege, and it happens now. Perhaps my body is ju

opposed to knowledge teaching or digesting it inany form. It gets in; my brain grows weak. A headacappears. The couch looks attractive. And the timecomes where I just put a fork in the idea of eating, bwithout actually using a fork.

4.Better Healthcare.Most know that teachers are government

workers. Well, unless they dont know that, ofcourse. I cant speak for private school teacher(who have fancy rings from fancy institutions.Maybe.), but those of us in the state collegesystem have nice benefits. I believe someonecalled my healthcare plan the Cadillac ofhealthcare plans, so when it comes to the part ones diet as in knowing what is up with mybody and stuff, Im on the up and up. Or at leaIm taken care of on a yearly basis.

A spring or two ago, my knee locked up on mehalfway through a training run. I was fortunate

enough to see a doctor that day and get the 41on what to do and eat to make my musclesbehave themselves. I realize not everyone hasthis kind of access, but thats what Im saying Ihave no excuse for bad health.
