Main Idea Practice
Implied Main Ideas
What is a topic? It is the subject of an entire paragraph. It is just a few words or a phrase. What is the stated main idea? The single idea that is the focus of the
paragraph. It is expressed in a single sentence.
Topic & Main Idea
Authors often state the main idea of a paragraph.
Some authors do not do this; however the paragraph will still have a main idea.
An implied main idea is a main idea that is not stated directly but is strongly suggested by the supporting details in the paragraph.
Implied Main Idea
When the main idea is not stated, it is necessary for the reader to try and figure out what the author’s main point is.
Today we are going to think about implied main ideas through art.
How many of you have heard of Norman Rockwell?

Implied Main Idea

Okay let’s count off 1-2-3-4 Get into groups with the students that have
the same number as you. In groups, we go through the same steps we
went through with the picture of the young girl.
When you are finished completing the activity, decide who will speak about the picture, and who will be “Vanna White” (show the picture around).

Let’s take a 10 minute break
Supporting Details
Supporting details are reasons, examples, facts, steps, or other kinds of evidence that explain a main idea.
What are Supporting Details?
“I know why I don’t lose weight. Eating big meals and lots of snacks makes me happy. Drinking beer makes me happy. Not exercising makes me happy.”
In this cartoon, the main idea is: “I know why I don’t lose weight. The supporting details are: big meals, snacks, beer, and not exercising.
The joke is that these supporting details may make him happy, but they don’t make him healthy.
What are the Supporting Details?
I have raised many dogs over the years, and my love for dogs has grown more and more with each one. My dogs are part of my family; I am their mom and they are my children. When I call for my dogs, I say, “boys come see mommy.” My daughter thinks of them as her brothers. She has learned the love of dogs through my love of dogs. Being an only child, having dogs has given her friends or I guess brothers, to play with. With the love of dogs there is also some heartbreak. Dogs do not normally live as long as we do. I have watched three of my dogs take their last breath. I will continue to have dogs for as long as I can. They make my life happier.
Major & Minor Supporting Details
Major details explain and develop the main idea.
Minor details help fill out the major details and make them clear.
Let’s look at the “Dog” paragraph again.

I have many hobbies but the one I enjoy the most is dancing. I started dancing when I was a little girl. When my mom discovered how much I enjoyed it, she enrolled me in dance classes. I took jazz, ballet, hip-hop and tap lessons. By the time I got to high school my interests in dance changed. I started taking hip-hop lessons and really enjoyed it. In my twenties, I returned back to the one dance I really loved as a child – ballet. I have been taking lessons for several years, and am know part of a dance company.
What are the three major details? Which minor details go under the major details?
Group Practice
You will be assigned a main idea. You will need to come up with 3-4 major supporting details.
Group 1: There are several good reasons for attending Porterville College.
Group 2: This is definitely a music lover’s room. Group 3: Family camping is a lot of fun, but also a lot of work. Group 4: Moving out of your parent’s home can be a challenge. Group 5: There are several steps needed in order to plan a
