Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee (BPAC) Spring Events

The District 303 Bilingual Parent Advisory Com-mittee is made up of parents of English learners community members and District 303 staff mem-

bers who work together to foster relationships and provide educational programming Over the last few weeks BPAC has hosted two events aimed at supporting students and their families

Fermilab is committed to partnering with the community and on April 19 members of the Fermilab Society of His-panic Professional Engineers (fSHPE) visited with BPAC students and families As part of the presentation staff members Jose De La O Raul Campos Felix Sotres Ruben Noceda and Jeny Teheran discussed ways in which Fermilab can work with District 303 to give bilingual teachers and students the opportunity to build relationships with bilingual scientists and engineers

During the meeting Davis second grade students from Mrs Heynckrsquos and Mrs Proarsquos classes shared videos they made showing what they had learned during their recent Project Lead the Way unit The Changing Earth Members of the fSHPE were not only impressed with the STEM initiatives in D303 but also that the students were able to communicate complex scientific concepts in both English and Spanish at such young ages

The first Dia del nino or Childrenrsquos Day celebration was held on Sunday April 29 at the Thompson 7th8th Center Childrenrsquos Day is an annual event that has been celebrated in Mexico since the early 1920rsquos As the name implies the day focuses on the importance of loving accepting and appreciating children

Through the efforts of BPAC officers Edna Rubio and Yesenia Martinez along with support from D303 staff and student volunteers from the Spanish National Honor Societies of East and North High Schools over 200 people came together to celebrate Children along with their sib-lings parents and even grandparents enjoyed an afternoon of reading stories learning about reptiles playing games and listening to mariachis Students spent time writing books that they were able to take home along with the two books they received from the book fair

The final BPAC event this spring is the Annual Statewide Summit for Bilingual Parents on May 12 at the HiltonChicago Oak Brook Hills Resort and Conference Center Attendees will be able to choose from a variety of sessions designed for parents from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds

Employer Appreciation Breakfast

Cooperative Education classes provide students with hands-on work experiences combined with a study of practical work-related topics

and consumer skills Students at both high schools also have the opportunity to work at local businesses as part of an internship program The purpose is to expose students to real world working experiences in industries that interest them Often students find a career path based on where they have worked Or just as important they may find out that the industry or job is not for them

Each year students teachers and employers come together to celebrate the accomplishments of the students and to show appreciation to the community businesses who generously give their time and efforts to help students learn about various careers Over 50 students and their employers came together this morning to celebrate at the annual Employer Ap-preciation Banquet at St Charles East High School Six students received student of the year recognition from their teachers and employers

ldquoFebruary 2016 I found a lump in my left breasthellipDoctors performeda mammogram and ultrasound where they determined that it was nothing to be concerned about and they said to check up 6 months later In August 2016 I went back in for a checkup and the lump grew by 23 Doctors were concerned and wanted to perform a lumpectomy After the procedure it was determined that the lump was a cancerous tumor known as invasive mucinous carcinoma With only being 31 years old doctors said it would be best to have a bilateral mastectomy In September I had my first surgery for a bilateral mastectomy where spacers were implanted Every week I would have to go in to get injections and also started taking hormone therapyhellip in March 2017 was my next surgery to have the spacer taken out and the implant put it After a couple weeks one implant started to rotate and look disfigured Another surgery was scheduled to change the implants In the process of waiting for surgery I discovered another lump Doctors discussed to have the lump removed during my procedure in June in hopes that is was scar tissue Three days post-surgery I found out that I have the same tumor againhellipinvasive mucinous carcinoma againhellip next step is a PET scan surgery and then radiation
