Som Europæisk Kulturhovedstad 2017 byder Aarhus i gennemsnit på over 20 oplevelser hver dag. Det bety-der, at du kan opleve kunst og kultur i verdensklasse hele sommeren.

Dans i gaderne, opera i butikkerne, street art og over-vældende udendørs forestillinger i og omkring Aarhus. Get Around Town har mødt Rebecca Matthews, adm. direktør for Fonden Aarhus 2017, til en snak om det væld af kulturelle oplevelser, sommeren byder på.

Hvordan vil man som turist i Aarhus opleve, at byen er Europas Kulturhovedstad 2017? - Byen bliver dynamisk, levende og fyldt med farver. Uanset om man kommer til Aarhus for at have det sjovt, være eftertænk-som eller provokerende er der rig mulighed for at blive under-holdt og udfordret. Rundt omkring i byen kan man møde vores frivillige ReThinkers, som kan vise vej til nye oplevelser.

Hvordan oplevede du selv at komme til Aarhus?- Som udefrakommende oplevede jeg Aarhus som en meget gæstfri og venlig by. Århusianerne er stolte af deres by, og man bliver mødt med meget varme og imødekommenhed i butikker og restauranter. >

Let’s Rethink!Kulturen forandrer sig, og verden står over for en ræk-ke udfordringer, som kræver nye metoder, teknologier og tankesæt. Som kulturhovedstad inviterer Aarhus 2017 alle til at deltage i forandringerne under det overordnede tema ”Let’s Rethink”, og sætter særligt fokus på kerneværdierne demokrati, mangfoldighed og bæredygtighed.

In its role as European Capital of Culture 2017, Aarhus plays host to a daily average of more than 20 events. This gives you the chance to experience world-class art and culture throughout the summer.

Dancing in the streets, opera in the shops, street art, and overwhelming outdoor performances in and around Aarhus. Get Around Town met up with Rebecca Matthews, Managing Director of Fonden Aarhus 2017, for a chat about the multitude of cultural events planned for the summer.

How will a tourist in Aarhus experience the city’s status as European Capital of Culture 2017? - The city will be dynamic, alive, and filled with colour. Whether you come to Aarhus to have fun, to reflect, or to provoke, there will plenty of opportunity to be entertained and challenged. As you move through the city, you might come across our volunteer ReThinkers who can point you to new experiences.

How was your own experience on arriving to Aarhus?- As an outsider I experienced Aarhus as a very hospitable and friendly city. The people here are very proud of their city and you are received with warmth and a friendly attitude in shops and restaurants. >

Let’s Rethink!Culture changes and the world is faced by a range of challenges requiring new methods, technologies, and ways of thinking. As Capital of Culture, Aarhus 2017 invites everyone to take part in the change under the heading of “Let’s Rethink”, with a particular focus on the core values of democracy, diversity, and sustaina-bility.

EUROPÆISKKULTUR-HOVEDSTADhvad er det?

Europæisk Kulturhovedstad er et internationalt kulturprojekt, hvor to byer hvert år udvælges af EU.

Athen blev som den første udnævnt til Europæisk Kulturby i 1985. Siden 1999 har projektet heddet Europæisk Kulturhove stad.

I 2017 er de to Europæiske Kulturhovedstæder Aarhus og Paphos på Cypern.

I Danmark løfter Aarhus pro-grammet sammen med 18 andre midtjyske kommuner.

Igennem flere end 450 arrange-menter i løbet af 2017 inviterer Aarhus og Region Midtjylland resten af Europa til dialog om nye løsninger på fælles globale og lokale udfordringer.

Flere end 3.0000 borgere har meldt sig som frivillige ReThin-kers.

EUROPEANCAPITAL OFCULTURE

European Capital of Culture is an international culture project un-der which two cities are elected each year by the EU.

In 1985, Athens was the first city to be elected European City of Culture. As of 1999, the project has been named European Capital of Culture.

In 2017, the two European Ca-pitals of Culture are Aarhus and Paphos in Cyprus.

In Denmark, Aarhus pull off the event in collaboration with 18 other municipalities in the mid-Jutland area.

Through more than 450 events during 2017, Aarhus and Central Denmark Region invites the rest of Europe to participate in a dialogue about new solutions to common global and local challenges.

More than 3,000 citizens have signed up as volunteer ReThin-kers.

Hvilken betydning har det at blive udnævnt til Europas Kultur-hovedstad?- Der har traditionelt været masser af god kultur i Aarhus, men titlen som kulturhovedstad har taget byen til næste niveau og åbnet helt nye muligheder for internationalt samarbejde. Det er kun, fordi vi er kulturhovedstad, at vi i april kunne præsentere Wayne McGregors magiske danseforestilling ”Tree of Codes” i Musikhuset, og at han desuden har skabt den helt unikke danse-forestilling Lightlens specielt til Aarhus. Begge dele har fået stor international opmærksomhed og giver os – sammen med de andre internationalt omtalte arrangementer – mulighed for at vise verden, at Aarhus er en spændende og levende by, hvor der bliver skabt fantastisk dansk kunst og kultur. En by, hvor man har lyst til opholde sig, bo, studere og investere.

Hvad ser du selv frem til at opleve denne sommer?- Teaterforestillingen Røde Orm, som bliver opført på Moesgaard Museums græsklædte tag, er en enestående visuel oplevelse, jeg ikke vil gå glip af. Jeg har set noget af scenografien, og den er mindblowing.Derudover er der The Garden, som bliver den hidtil største ud-stilling på ARoS og i Aarhus. Udstillingen viser værker af udvalgte internationale kunstnere på ARoS, rundt omkring i byen og fire kilometer op langs kysten. Det bliver extravagant visuel kunst, som jeg glæder mig meget til at opleve.Og i sensommeren ser jeg frem til den helt specielle dansefore-stilling Depth of Field, som er skabt eksklusivt i Aarhus. Projektet samler nogle af Aarhus’ dygtigste kor, musikere, sangere og dan-sere i en enestående forestilling, hvor indtryk fra byen og gaden får lov at spille med.Uden for Aarhus glæder jeg mig til den smukke ildregatta i Silke-borg og til at opleve industrihavnen i Randers blive forvandlet til totaloplevelsen Watermusic.

Hvad vil du anbefale turister at opleve, når de er i byen i kort tid?- Mange besøger Aarhus for at opleve specifikke events. Men der er også rig mulighed for at få spontane kulturelle oplevelser med hjem. For eksempel vil kunstnergruppen Little Rebellions sørge for overraskende events og uventede kunsthappenings i gader, stræder, parker og pladser. Over halvdelen af arrangementerne er gratis, så man kan gå på opdagelse og opleve noget nyt og anderledes.

Hvordan kan man som besøgende i Aarhus blive en del af Rethink-tanken? - Ved at møde op, deltage, være engageret og nysgerrig. Ved at lade sig inspirere og ved at have modet til at tænke anderledes og se ting på nye måder.

Hvad kan man tage med sig hjem fra et besøg i Europas kultur-hovedstad?- Vi vil gerne fortælle en mere nuanceret historie og vise verden, at Danmark er mere og andet end tv-serien ”Forbrydelsen” (der har opnået stor popularitet i udlandet, red.) og smørrebrød. Forhåbentlig får man en dybere forståelse for dansk kultur og den danske interesse for demokrati, bæredygtighed og mangfol-dighed. >

LittleRebellions

What is the impact of being named European Capital of Cultu-re?- Aarhus has traditionally offered lots of cultural experiences, but the title of Capital of Culture lifts the city to the next level and has opened completely new avenues of international colla-boration. Only as Capital of Culture would we in April have been able to show Wayne McGregor’s magical dance performance “Tree of Codes” in Aarhus Concert Hall, in addition to which he has created the unique dance performance “Lightlens” specifi-cally for Aarhus. Both performances have attracted substantial international attention and give us - together with the other internationally referenced events - the opportunity to show the world that Aarhus is an exciting, living city where fantastic Da-nish art and culture are being created. A city where one would want to stay, to live, to study, and to invest.

What are the events that you personally look forward to this summer?- The theatre performance “Røde Orm” (Red Worm), to be per-formed on the grassy roof of Moesgaard Museum, is a unique visual experience that I wouldn’t want to miss. I have seen some of the set design and it is truly mind blowing. There is also “The Garden”, the largest ever exhibition at ARoS and in Aarhus. The exhibition shows works of select international artists at ARoS, around the city, and four kilometres along the coast. This will be spectacular visual art that I really look forward to experiencing.And at the end of summer I look forward to the unique dance performance “Depth of Field”, all of which has been created in Aarhus. The project puts together some of the best choirs, mu-sicians, singers, and dancers in Aarhus in a singular performance including impressions from the city and the streets.Away from Aarhus, I look forward to the beautiful fire regatta in Silkeborg and to see the industrial port in Randers become transformed during the total experience Watermusic.

What would you recommend a tourist on a short stay in the city to seek out?- Many people visit Aarhus for specific events. There are, however, also abundant opportunities for spontaneous cultural experiences. For example, the artists’ ensemble Little Rebellions will perform surprising events and unexpected artistic happens on the streets, down alleys, in parks, and on squares. More than half of the events are free of charge, allowing people to go exploring and experiencing something new and different.

How can a visitor to Aarhus become part of the Rethink idea? - By turning up, taking part, being engaged and inquisitive. By taking on-board inspiration and by having the courage to think differently and see things in a new way.

What lasting impression can you expect from visiting the Euro-pean Capital of Culture?- We want to tell a story with more facets to it, to show the world that Denmark is more than TV series such as “The Killing” (very popular abroad, ed.) and open face sandwiches. We hope that people will develop a deeper understanding of Danish culture and the Danish involvement in democracy, sustainability, and diversity. >
