Vision

To enable school communities across the UK to become models of Energy Efficiency.

Our Aims: • To improve data handling and problem solving skills

for pupils in Year 5. • To encourage a responsible attitude and desire for

low carbon living. • To help communities across the UK understand the

benefits of reducing CO2 emissions. • To empower energy users across the UK to reduce

their fuel bills.

Objectives:

Provide teachers with high quality resources that enable pupils to achieve high standards for data handling and

problem solving skills.

• To deliver a highly engaging, reusable programme, that enables schools to act as knowledge hubs for Energy and Climate Change.

• To provide schools and their communities with a range of activities and resources that empower them to make good choices in relation to energy conservation and low carbon living.

• To empower children to become messengers who describe and model behaviours that reduce CO2 emissions and reduce fuel poverty.

The Background:

• Won Department of Energy and Climate Change ‘Energy efficiency’ competition;

• 53 schools previously taken part;

Energy Heroes programme

The Structure: • Teacher Training twilight session

• Energy Quiz • Newsletter article

• Whole School Assembly delivered by team and Energy saving Flyer for all pupils

• Kick off lesson for Year 5s delivered by specialist teacher

• Home Challenges and log books

• School Eco Energy Audit with pupils, led by energy expert

• Further 5 Lessons, delivered by year 5 teacher through resource booklet

• School’s energy saving action plan/display board delivered by energy expert

• Certification

• Community Event with goody bag

• Evaluation of impact undertaken by team

Teacher resource booklet: Lessons are designed to use real and relevant data within the context of energy

Energy Quiz:

To evaluate the impact of the

programme, pupils and their parents take part in a pre

and post quiz.

The Assembly:

The Kick off assembly launches the Year 5s on their quest to become ‘Energy Heroes’ and help save the planet! Each pupil receives an energy efficiency ‘tips’ leaflet.

The lessons: 6 lessons that fit the maths national curriculum and use real and

relevant data that encourages problem solving.

Home challenges to help influencing behaviour, helping the pupils to become the teacher and enabler!

• Home Energy Audit • Log Books • Appliance Cost Tags • Evil Standby Flyby • Be a Saver! Check List.

Log books: These are used to record electricity meter readings, firstly in schools then within the pupil’s homes. This data is then used within maths lessons to evaluate and understand energy use.

Luggage tags are used around the home to show running costs of appliances

Appliance cost tags:

Staying safe link for pupils to watch:

Evil standby:

Making a character to detect and banish standby

Eco-energy audit: On average schools spend £20,000 on their energy bills. Supporting the schools to write a 2-year action plan that reduces energy use and promotes a whole school approach to energy efficiency could reduce bill by 10-15%.

• Engaging and empowering children within the school environment to make the changes

• Fits with the Eco-school’s energy module

• Energy action plan – developing the top 5 actions for the school

• Energy Display board – path to save 10%

• Liaison with school business manager/ building manager

74% of Year 5 pupils think it is important to save energy in our homes.

They’re right!!

More than 25% of carbon emissions in the UK comes from the energy we use every day in our homes!! That’s why the little things you do at home will add up and help save our planet.

Oh…. and you’ll save Mum and Dad a few pounds too….

76% of Year 5 pupils think that saving energy is good for the planet.

Absolutely!

81.7% of the world’s energy comes from the burning of fossil fuels!

Here is a Pie chart showing how Year 5s at Liss answered a question to explain their understanding of climate change.

Climate change is the changing of the earth's weather because the planet is getting hotter. What do you think climate change is caused by?

More Flooding

Too much carbon dioxide in the air

Acid rain

The sun getting closer to the earth

76% percent of year 5’s knew that renewable energy is energy that never runs out

The sun continuously hits the earth with 35,000 times the amount of energy required by all of us who now use electricity on the planet! That’s 174,000,000,000,000,000 watt hours or equivalent to 2880 trillion lightbulbs!!!

What Year 5’s at LISS already know about energy and climate change.
