Why expand to Thailand?

● In new buildings or plants is often a focus on energy-efficient technology● Many modern factories are at German (or Japanese) technical level● Existing plants are sometimes less energy efficient● For Central European people the strong air-conditioned shopping centers and

transport vehicles are too cold (much energy is wasted here)● Instead of energy-efficient multicompressor refrigeration systems often single

refrigeration split systems are used

Status of energy efficiency in Thailand

● Emerging market with high potential for optimization● German engineers are in high demand● Well-trained experts are available as partners● No major difficulties in developing new markets (unlike, for example in U.S. or

China)

Experiences of our activities in the Thai market

● The significant saving potentials in the Thai industry are similar to those in Europe: Heat and cold recovery systems, optimization of compressed air, refrigeration and ventilation systems, engines, using of renewable energy, etc.

● The building sector offers the biggest saving potentials in the field of cooling, heat does not matter (as in Germany)

● The technical know-how of the staff in most companies is good● The handling of projects is sometimes for a Western European people a little bit

strange● There is a lack of some "typical German" characteristics:

● A high structured approach to a project● Holistic thinking ("thinking outside the box")

● Most employees have less own initiative than employees in Germany, in Thailand are usually more hierarchical approaches

● That makes for example the implementation of energy management systems difficult (the energy manager must be able to making decisions!)

● EnMS according ISO 50001 has been implemented earlier than in Germany

Building up a Thai partner company (Train the Trainer)

● The Thai service company TNIS has been trained specifically in the form● Train the Trainer● Training on the Job

● Goal: after 6 months significant know-how transfer to the Thai partners● Common visits of the companies● Common development of energy efficiency analyses● Trainings on the topics:

● Conduction of energy efficiency analyses● Implementation of energy management systems according to ISO 50001● Creation of measurement point concepts● Measurement techniques / Planning of measuring and monitoring systems● System training with JEVis energy monitoring software

● Implementation of measurement technique at TNIS office in Bangkok (for demonstration purposes)

Best Practice 1: Thai Hitachi, Bangkok

● Industry: Manufacturing of enameled and not-enameled copper wire● Our task: Conduction of an energy efficiency analysis, key findings:

● The furnaces are insulated very poorly, waste heat is not used● Heat losses can be significantly reduced by insulation of the furnaces and the exhaust ● A heat recovery can be used for:

● Absorption refrigeration system● Preheating the material before it is fed into the furnaces (heat demand of the

furnace decreases)

● Compressed air:● The pressure was set up too high, could be reduced more than 1 bar● All areas using the same pressure, by separation of areas the pressure can be

significantly reduced in some areas● The controlling is not demand-oriented, no frequency converters● A heat recovery of the compressors would be quite easy to implement

● Chillers:● The controlling is not demand-oriented, no frequency converters● No defrost on demand, consumption increases by strong freezing

Best Practice 2: Thai Glass, Bangkok

● Industry: Glass manufacturing from recycled waste glass (mainly bottles)● Our task: Conduction of an energy efficiency analysis, key findings:

● The furnaces are the biggest energy consumer, there is significant waste heat, which is not used, thus scenarios were developed for a heat recovery

● Absorption refrigeration system (result would be too much cold, it has to be sold partly) ● Preheating the material before it is fed into the furnaces (heat demand of the furnace

decreases)● Steam generation, after that using a steam turbine for electrical power generation

● Compressed air:● The pressure was set up too high, can be reduced● All areas using the same pressure, by separation of areas the pressure can be

significantly reduced in some areas● The controlling is not very demand-oriented, no frequency converters

● Peak load management:● High power peaks, are expensive and stressing the transformers● Remedy: planning and implementing a peak load management system

Best Practice 3: Siam Paragon, Bangkok

● Industry: Shopping Center● Our tasks:

● Creation of a measuring point concept● Planning of an energy controlling system● Conduction of an energy efficiency analysis, key findings:

● Its very cold in all areas (refrigeration is the largest energy consumer)● The temperature is different in different floors, from 18 °C to 20 °C

● Significant savings in air conditioning possible (per °C about 7%)● The controlling of the refrigeration equipment is not very demand-

oriented● There is no centralized system for monitoring the refrigeration

systems● The lighting is inefficient in some areas
