OPERATING PRINCIPLE

CHIME and CUPS are used for detecting corrosion and pitting under clamps and pipe supports where it is not directly feasible to be inspected by normal inspection method. CHIME is based on the through thickness technique and is good for detecting gradual thickness degradation and insensitive to small pitting. CUPS is based on reflection principles and is good for the detection of small and large corrosion pitting but insensitive for graduation degradation of wall thickness. It can be conducted externally on annular plates and the whole area can be covered by swiveling the probe.

CHIME & CUPS Creeping Head Inspection Method & Corrosion Under Pipe Support Testing

7

CHIME, Creeping Head Inspection Method

• Floor map technique based on receiving an echo from the defect.• Creeping waves can be generated by using a transducer angled at the critical angle.• The creeping wave continually generates shear waves (HEAD waves) which propagates along the surfaces.• If the receiver is placed some distance away (up to 1m), the series of signal is observed at the receiver and the entire volume of the sample is inspected.

CUPS, Corrosion Under Pipe Support Testing

• The specially designed probe emits the ultrasonic beam having the width, duration of the wave package and basic wave length comparable with the thickness of the plate.• The ultrasonic wave package saturates the volume of the plate/ pipe and any reflection echoes from pitting and corrosion damage picked up by the probe and produced as an image.

APPLICATIONS

• New weldments to record a repeatable base line image.• In-service weldments for erosion loss at the root zone.• In-service weldments for preferential corrosion loss at the root and heat affected zone (HAZ).• In-service weldments and material for fatigue or service related cracking problems.• New construction HDPE fusion weld inspection.• Less dependent on probe position and defect orientation than pulse echo techniques.• Comprehensive coverage by the wide beam.• Accurate determination of defect height and length.

TOFD Time of Flight Diffraction-In service inspection of welds

TOFD is a UT technique that relies on detection of diffracted waves to find defects. The system operates in a pitch & catch configuration using a transmitting probe and a receiving probe. It is well suited for the rapid inspection of girth welds on pipes and vessels and provides real time data search for preferential weld root erosion and corrosion.

Long Range Ultrasonic Testing is a specialised non-destructive testing (NDT) method capable of detecting corrosion in pipes and pipelines at areas inaccessible for inspection by conventional NDT methods, i.e. insulated and sleeved pipework, or pipelines running under roads or elevated on pipe racks. It is a pulse-echo system, aimed at testing large volumes of material from a single test point. The collar clamped around the pipe produces a 360° sound wave moving axially down the pipe using the pipe itself to guide the wave.LRUT is primarily a screening tool and does not provide a direct measurement of pipe wall thickness. The technique is sensitive to a combination of the depth and circumferential extend of any metal loss on both the outside and inside surfaces of the pipe. A signal response is produced where the cross-section is reduced or changes character at a weld or other pipe feature.
