Shropshire Workplace Rounders a ‘Big Hit’!

Over 20 staff from organisations across Shropshire took part in a Rounders competition on Wednesday 20th May at London Road Sports Centre, Shrewsbury as part of the Workplace Challenge and to celebrate Workplace Health Week.

The event was co-ordinated by Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, the County Sports Partnership, who aim to support more workplaces to be active. The first Workplace Challenge competition took place on 30th April and saw over 35 people from across Shropshire play doubles badminton with their colleagues.

Competitors were from Bluebird Care, The Shrewsbury Club and Regus among others. Many of the players hadn’t picked up a Rounders bat since school, but after a quick warm up and overview of the rules by qualified Rounders Activator Emma Tomkins, from Shropshire Council Leisure Services, everyone was ready to give it a go.

The Shrewsbury Club managed to just edge out Bluebird Care to win, both teams displayed great team spirit and camaraderie. The competition was played with a lot of enthusiasm and a great sense of humour, and as the competition went on players were scoring more rounders, fielding well and throwing fewer ‘no balls’.

Chris Child, Chief Executive of Energize STW said,

“We were extremely pleased with the success of the Workplace Challenge Rounders event. To anyone who missed out, you can still get together with your colleagues for some of the other fantastic events we have coming up. We’ve got Golf and Touch Rugby events coming up, all designed for people who don’t have much experience of doing these kinds of activities, so we believe that there is something for everyone. All you need to do to get involved is register on the Workplace Challenge.”

Energize’s workplace competition programme is exclusively available through the Workplace Challenge, a free sporting initiative where you can earn points for being active.

Shropshire Launch Year of Physical Activity

“Everybody Active Everyday”

The UK is 20% less active than it was in 1961, and if current trends continue, we will be 35% less active by 2030. To address physical inactivity as a major health risk, Shropshire’s Health and Wellbeing Board has made 2015 the 'Year of Physical Activity ‘.

A launch event was held at the Trinity centre on 28th April. Organisations were asked to assess their current and potential future contribution to the physical activity agenda to create a shared physical activity strategy.

Everybody Active Everyday provides the evidence base for actions necessary to create a culture shift to embed physical activity in the fabric of society so being active is ‘the norm’. This involves all sectors of society (professionals , providers, commissioners, health, social care, business, education, sports and leisure, transport, housing, planning).

Click here for the Everybody Active Everyday recommendations

Adults need to engage in at least 150 minutes of physical activity every day to stay healthy click here

Sedentary behaviour (time spent sitting) is a separate health risk to inactivity. Sitting for more than 4 hours each day doubles the risk of heart disease and is linked to a range of health issues sedentary behaviour

Messages from the Grassroots

Over the past couple of months Sported have been hosting a series of ‘Your Sported Network, Get Connected’ events up and down the UK.

One question posed to their members and mentors is: ‘If you had to make the case for Sport for Development to one stakeholder group, what would your message be?’

One of the most telling things to come from this exercise was which target stakeholder group you chose to address. By far and above the most commonly chosen group was National Government, amongst Sported members there’s the overwhelming sentiment that community sport and Sport for Development is under-valued and under-resourced by those in power.

Follow this link for a summary of responses

To continue the debate or respond to any of the issues outlined above, login to Your Sported Network and add your comments to Your Forum.

If your organisation is providing sport for development, it’s free for you to become a member of Sported - Sported membership.

Work out taxable income for a CASC

If your organisation is registered with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) as a community amateur sports club (CASC), you need to work out which part of your income to pay tax on. You could be charged a penalty if you don’t tell HMRC about any taxable income on time.

What counts as taxable income CASCs are treated as companies for tax purposes, so your CASC will have to pay Corporation Tax on any income or capital gains that don’t qualify for tax relief, e.g. profits from trading under £50,000 a year (£30,000 before 1 April 2015). Your CASC needs to spend all of its income and gains on ‘qualifying purposes’ or it will lose some or all of its tax reliefs and the club may get a tax bill. Qualifying purposes means providing facilities for eligible sports and encouraging people to take part in them. If you’re asked to send in a company tax return, you must complete it and pay any tax due on time.
