Renewable Energy
We need more energy and cleaner ways to generate it!
Wind power generates no emissions: A modern turbine produces
~5000MWh/year reducing CO2 emissions by over 3000 tons.
A hydro power plant produces 100 times less greenhouse gases than a coal
plant
Renewable energy costs are decreasing as technology improves, we are
attaining cost-competitive levels

Wind Industry
3,500 BC first sailboats (wind is used to carry ships across oceans)
2,000 BC first windmills (wind used to pump water)
medieval period (windmills were used to grind grain)
1800s first windmills which creates electricity
Beginning of 1900s wind turbines created electricity all over Europe and US
Middle of 1900s expansion of commercial turbines
early1980s beginning of modern turbines era
1990's growing interest in renewable energy due to public concerns about
global warming
2003 politics in Germany, Denmark, and Spain encourage wind industry
developments, consequently Europe has 70% of the world’s wind energy
2009 Wind Power provides 2% of worldwide electricity usageSource: http://learn.kidwind.org/learn/wind_basics_history

Wind Industry
Canada’s wind industry :
5,265 MW installed – 2.3% of Canada’s electricity demand
1,267 MW installed in 2011 – representing $3.1 billion of investment
More than 6,000 MW of wind energy projects are contracted over the next 5 years
Industry target – achieve 20% of Canada’s demand by 2025
