Welcome to Britcar 2021

The 2020 season threw some enormous challenges, but we managed to ensure, along with a dedicated bunch of competitors, that it was a resounding success. Our brand new Trophy category excelled despite the pandemic, with an eclectic mix of cars and a wide range of driver experience, and our roster of overall and class champions typifies the success that can be achieved at this level, whilst our Britcar Endurance category once again proved Britcar’s wide appeal to all aspects of endurance racing, whether your commitment be “aspirational” or “destinational” – our teenage overall champions, Jem Hepworth and Danny Harrison, can look forward to a professional career in global endurance racing, and, for instance, our Class 3 victors, Marcus Fothergill and Dave Benett, add another trophy in careers as skilled amateurs of over 20 years of experience.

For our 2021 season, we build on the success of last year, and continue with our two discrete Britcar Endurance and Britcar Endurance Trophy categories on a race weekend, with Endurance generally having two 60-minute races on a Saturday, and Trophy featuring two 50-minute races on the Sunday. There may be some exceptions through the season, so please check our 2021 calendar. As previously, both championships will be regulated by our unique Britcar Endurance Performance Indicator (BEPI), to ensure a structured and competitive environment. In addition, following the success of the Praga marque in Britcar, we will be running a separate championship for these exciting cars, within the Britcar Endurance structure and in association with the manufacturer. This category will have its own results, trophies and points structure, and will not conflict with the existing Britcar Endurance Championship.

You will see a change to Britcar’s image in 2021, as the parent company of our long-standing tyre partner Dunlop is changing the branding to Goodyear. This does not affect the stability of the ongoing partnership, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with Goodyear’s associates HP Tyres for the on-site supply of regulation tyres for all of our championships. Additionally, our association with Anglo American Oils continues, for the at-circuit supply of Sunoco fuel, and we also enjoy ongoing partnerships with a number of suppliers of automotive and motorsport products and services, offering preferential rates and discounts to Britcar competitors.

Britcar is indebted to the support of a number of people that ensure the smooth running of events; to the Britcar staff, many of whom are volunteers, for their raceday support and background work between events, and to members of the Williams family for their input on several levels.

I would also like to personally thank all of our sponsors, the staff at the British Automobile Racing Club, and all circuit staff, and of course, the dedicated and hard working marshals who support us at each event.

So it’s going to be an exciting 2021, and Britcar would love you to be part of our bright future.

Danny Harrison and Jem Hepworth became the youngest male/female pairing to win a major UK championship, clinching the overall Britcar Endurance and Class 1 titles in the VR Motorsport Praga R1T. It wasn’t a foregone conclusion though, there were issues along the way, and both often had to fight through the pack, and contend with team mates Jack Fabby and Garry Townsend, who also took wins. Jonny MacGregor and Ben Sharich valiantly took the fight to the Pragas in the unique MacG Racing Taranis, and MacGregor’s superb lone drive in the Snetterton season-closer almost resulted in a win.

Class 2 frontrunners Steve Burgess and Ben Dimmack, in the RAW Motorsport Radical RXC Coupe also took a couple of overall wins, but missed out on the Class title and overall runner-up spot, to outgoing champion Paul Bailey in his 2019 title-winning Ferrari 488, in which former co-champion Andy Schulz, and new co-driver Ross Wylie both played a part during the season. Military veterans Martyn Compton and Warren McKinlay had their most successful season yet in the naturally aspirated VR Motorsport Praga R1, while Mike Moss’s BMW 1M was fast but fragile.

In Class 3, old hands Marcus Fothergill and Dave Benett came out fighting from the opening round in their new Porsche 991, and they recovered from a troubled early season to take

the Class title. Usual stalwarts Mark and Peter Cunningham made only sporadic appearances in their Porsche 997, while Colin Sowter’s Ferrari 488 took a win in his only appearance at Brands Hatch.

Class 4 was the most competitive, and it was the Reflex Racing Ligier JS2-R of Marcus Vivian and Luke Davenport that took class honours, though they were just one of many class winners through the season. Nathan Wells’ BMW M3 didn’t reappear after a mid-season engine blow-up, and the similar machine of Jonathan Evans/Tom Bradshaw regularly headed the pack but didn’t always win, while pro-driver Sean Doyle and Irish champion Nicole Drought, learning her way around British circuits, were early-season favourites in the Valluga Porsche Cayman 981; they took the runner-up spot in the standings, ahead of the EDF Motorsport SEAT Cupra of Ash Woodman and Martin Byford. Lone driver Peter Erceg put in some solid performances in his Cayman, while the Team BRIT Aston Martin Vantage was a revelation, Bobby Trundley’s autism positively inspiring some courageous performances, supported by wheelchair-bound Aaron Morgan. New team Newbarn Racing were on a learning curve, the totally new squad campaigning a former road-going Jaguar F-Type for Callum and Adam Thompson; they had their problems along the way, but never lost their spirit.

2020 Britcar Trophy ReviewThe inaugural season of the new Trophy category was a resounding success, attracting drivers of varying experience into an endurance racing format, in a wide-variety of machinery, so it is fitting that our overall champion had little racing experience, in a 25 year-old car, exemplifying what can be achieved in this category. Oliver Smith, with a decade of track days under his belt in the JC Racing BMW M3 E46, took the prize, sealing the Class 6 title in the process. Our runner-up, and Class 7 victor Johnathan Barrett, in a BMW 330 run by Saxon Motorsport, was a recent convert to racing too, while our Class 5 title winners, Charlie Campbell and Rob Smith, showed the benefits of a pro-am pairing, BTCC aspirant Smith building a buffer in the Peugeot RCZ that gentleman driver Campbell fought hard to protect. The category established a class for the Renault Clios too, where brothers James and Ben Colburn mixed their battle with the overall positions, though it was Aaron Thompson, partnered by dad Steve, returning after a 13-year lay-off, that took the class crown.

It wasn’t all about the titles though. Barry McMahon’s Alfa Romeo 156 was untouchable, but stymied by mechanical issues, and was kept honest by Kester Cook once he joined mid-season in his Ford Fiesta, and also by the invitation

entry Honda Integra of Nigel Ainge and Danny Cassar, while the MacG Racing Mazda RX8 of Jonny MacGregor and Josh Tomlinson was a front-runner too, but had its issues, as did the Smart ForFour of Rob Baker and Jon Packer, who took an early-season win. Anthony Hutchins was in-line for the Overall and Class 5 titles, by consistent finishes, but his Porsche Boxster failed in the final race of the season, relegating him to class runner up, the same happening to Class 6 runner-up, the Ginetta G40 of Charlotte Birch and Adriano Medeiros, after some spirited drives by both pilots, while not figuring in the top points placings, but consistently running in the front of the class pack were the Porsche 996 of Richard Higgins, and Brad Kaylor’s SEAT Supra; Higgins took an overall win, while Kaylor’s performances earned him the Driver of the Year award.

In Class 7, Alistair Lindsay’s VW Golf was the benchmark for pace, but mechanical issues thwarted his title chances, relegating him to third in the standings, with father-and-son duo Steve and Edward Cook, in a Honda Civic, taking the runner-up spot. Team BRIT brought their BMW 116s into Class 7, where it was generally an inter-team rivalry amongst the drivers, with the pairing of Matty Street/Andrew Tucker being most successful.

ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP ENDURANCE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Britcar Endurance Championship and the Britcar Endurance Trophy Championship continue as separate entities for 2021, and we are introducing a new category, exclusively for the Praga marque.

In the Endurance category, there will be four classes – E1, E2, E3 and E4 – with the vehicle classification in Classes E1-E3 being determined by Britcar’s BEPI system, and Class 4 being for current or historically-homologated GT4 and TCR cars and the Ligier JS2-R Cup only. For Classes 1-3, the performance windows will generally be as 2020, eg, roughly (but not exclusively) approximating to GT3 for Class 1, Ferrari Challenge for Class 2, and Porsche Cup for Class 3. We will follow the existing format of two 60-minute races on the same day, though our highlight event at Silverstone GP on July 3rd will feature a single two-hour race.

Our Trophy category format for 2021 continues much as last season, with four classes (T1, T2, T3 and Clio), and we are making some minor adjustments to the class T1 and T2 structure to ensure competitiveness. Following the success of the separate Clio class on 2020, we are highlighting the potential for other one-make series to form a discrete class within the Trophy format. The race format will be, as last season, two 50-minute races on the same day.

Our New Praga category, is a one-make championship, in association with the manufacturer, that will share the Endurance grid, and there will be two classes, for Praga R1T and R1S machines, with the R1T cars running a “a Competition Pack” ECU to balance the performance with Britcar Endurance Class E1 competitors. The race format will be as Britcar Endurance, being two one-hour races on the same day, with the highlight two-hour race on the Silverstone GP circuit on July 3rd.

The Britcar Endurance Championship offers a wealth of opportunities for companies, brands and individuals to connect with potential partners and customers.

We have the opportunity to offer you a bespoke package to suit your needs, anything from simple stickers on cars to help to generate exposure or meeting and entertaining facilities at the race weekends. We can offer behind the scenes tours of a race meeting and exclusive pitlane access.

During recent seasons we have had emerging global brands use Britcar to launch new phases of their expansion plans, artisans use Britcar to connect with new clients, charities generate awareness and national and international brands use their presence in the Britcar paddock and on the competing race cars to leverage exposure.

As the Championship promoter Britcar is in the unique position of being able to offer the widest range of solutions to your requirements: be it a simple advert in a programme, through title sponsorship of a race meeting, having your branding on the TV coverage, race event hospitality meeting and networking facilities, hot-lap rides or anything else you can think of. Our team will work with you to achieve your ideal promotion.

The Britcar Endurance Performance Indicator (BEPI) is our way of grading each cars performance to ensure a fair and level playing field in each of the classes of the Britcar Endurance Championship. Most multi-class series categorise their cars based on a simple power-to-weight ratio or an engine size formula but neither of these methods take into account all of the aspects of car performance. This can easily lead to a car with a lower power to weight ratio out performing a car with a higher power to weight ratio due to a more sophisticated suspension system, a better gearbox or superior aerodynamics. This can lead to frustration for teams and drivers unable to compete.

The BEPI uses the power and weight of the car but that is only part of the solution. We also take into account the aerodynamics of the car, the position of the engine, which wheels are driven, the style of gearbox, development of the suspension and aerodynamics and what driver aids the driver has access to. This is all fed into our online calculator which then takes all this information, assigns various weightings to the different selections and calculates a figure, known as the BEPI figure. Each class has its own BEPI figure range making it easy to then classify each car based upon all these factors.

The BEPI calculator is hosted on our website at the following URL:

britcar-endurance.com/bepi/

The data updates live to give you the opportunity to develop and adjust your car ‘virtually’ and directly see the result of how it will affect the classification of the car.

The Britcar Endurance Performance Indicator system has proven itself to provide fair and even racing across the classes and with its refinement and re-balancing of the calculations it continues to provide this level playing field as new cars are produced and developed.

Following our, pandemic-restricted, take-away service in 2020 we are looking forward to the return of our full hospitality service in 2021 (nationwide regulations permitting). We will, again, have professional caterers looking after our teams, drivers and their guests building on the fantastic array of cooked lunches, cakes and snacks for the Britcar Members Hospitality you’ve all come to expect. All Britcar registered competitors and teams are welcome into the Britcar Hospitality Centre at each race weekend for complimentary tea, coffee and cold drinks.

At most UK race meeting our caterers will provide a two course lunch to all competitors in the Endurance, Trophy and Praga championships and are able to provide the same service to their guests and sponsors when purchased and booked in advance. Please contact Britcar directly to confirm prices and availability on [email protected] or 01428 288008.

Endurance and Praga Championship competitors are entitled to four hospitality passes included in their entry fee and have the ability to purchase additional passes prior to each event to ensure none of their guests miss out. Trophy competitors receive two passes per entry and also have the ability to purchase additional passes prior to each event.

The Britcar Endurance Hospitality is open all day and we encourage teams to socialise after the race has finished as this is when awards will be presented for overall and class places in the days races.

Media & TV Coverage

n Television: The team at Pro-Active Television filmed the 2020 Britcar championship with around 40 hours of coverage across the various distribution channels and over 80 individual TV slots - a large percentage of which were strong prime time slots or strong secondary or weekend slots.

Every programme was featured on the FreeSports and Motorsport TV channels with further coverage on our dedicated Youtube channel. Freesports is the first 24hour sports channel which is free to air in the UK on the Freeview, Freesat, Sky, Virgin, Talk Talk and BT platforms and has a potential reach of over 18 million households and an average of 1.9 million viewers during the broadcast period. TV producer, Chris Hartley, commented:

“Britcar continues to enjoy a much wider level of television coverage than many other National championships. Indeed only a very small handful of other championships can offer teams and sponsors regular prime-time coverage on such a wide choice of platforms. Rather than solely focusing on conveying the excitement and quality of racing on track, our coverage tries to put the spotlight on the drivers, characters and incredible cars that feature - and not just the front runners but entrants from every class, right the way through the grid.”

In 2021 Britcar breaks new ground with live streaming of all the Endurance, Trophy and Praga races through 247.tv. After a well received preview event with the Trophy Championship at Silverstone in 2020, Britcar and 247.tv have reached an agreement to cover all the Britcar Championships with 247.tv’s livestreaming platform.

n Photography: We continue to benefit from support from a number of professional and freelance photographers who post their race photos on the Britcar Endurance website after each event providing a very visible platform for on-car and on-racesuit sponsor logos and graphics. Images are available to be purchased from the photographers directly for driver and team publicity, please contact the office if you require any images and we will provide contact details of the appropriate photographer.

n Social Media: We continue to expand our presence on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with nearly 5000 followers on each platform. Videos, photos, news and results will be posted live during each round. We also have our own Youtube channel featuring replays of the TV programs.

n Publications: Covered by recognised publications Autosport and Motorsport News as well as a number of motorsport specific websites. Some of our sponsors also feature race reports and updates on their own websites and promotional material.

n Websites: The championship will continue to have web coverage for 2021 with race reports, team and driver interviews as well as special features on the Britcar Endurance website (britcar-endurance.com). All race timing is provided by TSL and timetables, results and live timing can be viewed on their site (tsl-timing.com).

Cash back for motorsport teams from HMRC

Sound too good to be true? R&D tax relief specialist Aldrich Consulting will be a new sponsor for the 2021 Britcar Endurance and Trophy championships. Managing Director, Steve Griffiths, will also be racing in the Britcar Trophy series, so go and speak to Steve as it may result in something back from the taxman for once!

Steve Griffiths says “It’s true to say that most motorsport teams and component

manufacturers are eligible for the scheme, but very few are claiming. Working with a number of motorsport companies I have secured substantial R&D tax credit refunds. On average my motorsports clients have secured in excess of £30,000 of HMRC refunds.”

So are you eligible? To enable someone in the paddock to claim they just need to meet the following criteria:

Be a limited company and traded for at least a year

Have developed, modified or improved race car components,

systems or processes

Have spent on materials, salaries and/or sub-contractors to
