Endorsements
An introduction
Endorsements Defined
• The subjects a teacher can teach and the grade range in which they are authorized to teach them
Changes
• Effective Sept 2018– Middle grade endorsements can only be acquired by
going through an approved Middle Grade program• Elementary Ed will be Grades 1-6 (self contained)• High school will be Grades 9-12 (departmentalized)
– This change (should) only effect freshmen and those others who do not or cannot claim their licenses/endorsements by end of August 2018.• If you hold a license and are middle grade endorsed prior
to 9/18, the middle grade endorsements will not be taken away).
Everyone who completes a program will be endorsed in something
• Departmentalized– Specialized or narrowly focused instruction• Examples: 9-12 grade Biology or Chemistry, Middle
grade 5-8 General Science or Math
• Self-contained General Education– All subjects taught to the same kids• Example B-3 Early Childhood Education, K-4 Elementary

course from life sciences (i.e, they can’t all be physical or life science courses).
