Introduction

If you are writing articles, books or any other material you will collect large number of references and you need to cite some of these references in your work properly. There are many reasons why it is important to cite the sources that you consult when researching a paper. Some Important reasons are:

• Gives credit to authors whose work you have used

• Provides a trial by which users can locate the materials you cinsulted

• Provides evidence of your research

• Properly citing materials is one strategy to help you avoid plagiarizing.

The sources should be cited properly according to the stylemanuals. This is even more important because large numberof information can be transmitted electronically allowing theusers to capture, send, copy and manipulate information toeasily create new works. This technological change alongwith the increasing needs of a researcher to publish hisresearch findings has shown the way to use electronic toolsto manage references. There are number of citationmanagement tools are available like Endnote, Refworks,Reference Manager etc. Among these Endnote andRefworks are most commonly used tools.

Endnote is a commercial software which can be installed onyour PCs. EndnoteWeb is a web version of this softwarewhich allows you to create a web based reference librarywhich you can access from wherever you are.

What is EndNoteWeb?• EndNote Web is a web-based bibliographic management tool powered by

It is a service which allows you to collect, store and manage yourown collection of references. You can insert these references automaticallyinto a Microsoft Word document and create bibliographies in the style ofyour choice.

With EndNote Web you can:

• Search Web of Knowledge, PubMed and hundreds of library OPACs directly

• Store up to 10,000 references per EndNote Web account

• Edit references—add notes, keywords—modify any field

• Use over 2,300 publishing styles to format in-text citations and bibliographies

• Cite While You Write in Microsoft Word (requires plug-in) to insert references and format papers instantly

• Easily transfer references to and from EndNote X.0.2 or later

• Share references with other EndnoteWeb users to simplify collaboration

There are two versions of EndNote:

• EndNote – a software package which can be installed on PCs (Latest: Endnote X6, US$ 299.95)

• EndNote Web - a free web version which you can access from wherever you are.

Although the key features are the same in both versions, there are differences in functionality between EndNote desktop and EndNote Web. EndNote Web may be better suited to undergraduates, while research students / scientists might want to use the added features of EndNote desktop.

You can also use EndNote desktop and EndNote Web together and transfer references between the two. (further information is available online in EndNote Web guide)
