Healthcare Initiative Foundation Makes $1 Million Joint Pledge for Health Education

The Healthcare Initiative Foundation (HIF) has made a joint pledge

of more than $1 million to the Montgomery College Foundation and the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) to build educational pathways for students pursuing health care careers.

Over a five-year period, more than 100 students in the fields of nursing, mental health/social work, and public health will earn associate and baccalaureate degrees with HIF’s generous support. Students with limited financial resources and those who speak English as their second language will be the target beneficiaries.

“Our goal is to ensure that there are accessible opportunities for Montgomery College student residents to thrive academically and meet the community’s workforce needs for high-quality, culturally and linguistically competent health services,” explained HIF President Crystal Carr Townsend. “HIF wants MC students to know that we believe in them and their future and are making a long-term commitment to assist them now so that, in the future, they can assist others.”

Through this initiative, Montgomery College will offer courses training MC and USG scholarship recipients to be culturally competent communicators; those who are bilingual also will have the opportunity to become certified in language interpretation in health care settings. Jobs requiring these skills are in high demand in the health care workforce.

The College’s nursing and health science faculty also will offer collaborative and cross-disciplinary learning activities for scholarship recipients, incorporating train-ing on effective integration practices and practical simulation experiences such as emergency response drills.

“This grant program offers students sev-eral powerful tools to support their degree completion and their success in the health care workplace,” said Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard, president of Montgomery College. “We greatly appreciate the tremendous support from the Healthcare Initiative Foundation for our students, and we value our vibrant collaboration with the Universities at Shady Grove.”

The Healthcare Initiative Foundation (http://www.hifmc.org/) supports organi-zations that offer solutions to improve the quality and delivery of health care for resi-dents of Montgomery County, Maryland. Since its inception in 1973, HIF has distrib-uted more than $80 million to an array of organizations and activities, while retaining an exclusive focus on improving health care for county residents.

Opening his home and magazine-worthy garden for an event is not new for the Honorable Jeffrey Slavin, mayor of the town of Somerset. What was

new on October 20, 2015—a particularly lovely fall evening—were the people who gathered together to celebrate an organization that is very near and dear to Jeffrey’s heart: the students of Montgomery College. Attendees included friends of Jeffrey’s, donors to the Montgomery College Foundation, and Jeffrey’s fellow MC Foundation Board of Directors members, including Linda Youngentob, who joins Jeffrey as co-chair for the MC2020 Campaign.

Jeffrey is well known for his dedication to causes that better our community, and his commitment to the students of Montgomery College is no exception. Steve Hull, edi-tor of Bethesda Magazine, conducted a Q&A with Dr. DeRionne Pollard that included a discussion about intergenerational poverty and the ways in which the College is tackling this topical and pervasive issue. This led to a discussion about MC’s Achieving Collegiate Excellence and Success (ACES) program and the students who have already begun to benefit from this community-changing program.

The theme for the 2016 Scholarship Recognition Luncheon—Philanthropy,

Opportunity, and Excellence—was evident in all aspects of the luncheon, which took place on April 28 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center.

Courtney Clark Pastrick, president of the Clark Charitable Foundation, was the donor speaker at this year’s luncheon. Her remarks about her father’s influence on her life and his recognition that education is the key to uplifting our society were well received by the 425 guests in attendance. Many of the donors and students in the room were surprised to learn that Mr. Clark was once a scholarship recipient, which allowed him to attend the University of Maryland and earn a degree in engineering. The students were inspired by Courtney’s message to be the hardest working student in the classroom as well as the hardest worker on the job. Hard work was the trait that Mr. Clark credited for his own success.

This year’s scholarship recipient speaker, Princess Rockefeller, was one of the first recipients of the A. James Clark Engineering Scholarship, established through a $500,000 grant from the Clark Charitable Foundation. Princess, who is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering, talked about growing up without many of the things we often take for granted and how those hardships instilled in her a love of chemistry and, in turn, engineering. She also described the opportunities she has had, including the opportunity to study engineering at Montgomery College, which offers 11 different engineering specialties and is the largest engineering transfer program in the country.

A highlight of this year’s luncheon was the Board of Directors Challenge. The fundraising challenge was initiated by the foundation’s board of directors vice chair, Ken Becker, who called upon his fellow board members to raise

2016 Scholarship Luncheon Brings Together Donors and Studentsfunds specifically at the luncheon. The board members who participated in the challenge raised $50,000 toward the match. In total, the challenge raised more than $130,000 during the luncheon. Applause erupted when, in her concluding remarks, Courtney Clark Pastrick committed $25,000 to the Board of Directors Challenge on behalf of the Clark Charitable Foundation.

The Montgomery College Foundation also appreciates the continued generosity of the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce. During the luncheon, the local chamber’s president,

Dr. Marilyn Balcombe, presented a $30,000 check to the foundation. She reminded the students about the importance of keeping their talent in Montgomery County. Through the years, the chamber has provided almost a quarter of a million dollars in scholarships to MC students.

With a record number of guests in attendance, this year’s luncheon was a true celebration of the opportunities that philanthropy provides and the true and lasting difference it makes in the lives of students in our community.

“We are very grateful to Attronica Computers for its thoughtful and generous investments in Montgomery College students over many years,” said Carol Rognrud, executive director of the Montgomery College Foundation. “Attronica’s scholarship support is vital to our students’ success and may be particularly important to Dream Act students who are unable to receive federal and state aid.”

Attronica Computers has supported students through the Montgomery College

Foundation since at least 1996, donating more than $90,000 during the past two decades. The company established its endowed scholarship fund in 2005. The endowed fund has benefitted

nine students to date and will continue making awards for years to come.

Attronica Computers also has supported the College in other ways. From 1998 to 2000, Carol Cornwell, the company’s co-founder, senior vice president, and chief quality officer, served on the Montgomery College Foundation’s Board of Directors. In addition, the company plans to partner with the College’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education division on a technology training and certification program that is focused on individuals who are Limited English Proficiency, unemployed, or underemployed.

Students may apply for the Attronica Computers Inc. Endowed Scholarship or more than 300 other scholarship awards for fall 2016 by visiting montgomerycollege.edu/scholarships, no later than July 31, 2016.

From the Chair

Looking back upon the many accomplishments of our board since I have been chair of the Montgomery

College Foundation’s Board of Directors, I am most proud of the role we have played in increasing the number of scholarships awarded to students in our community. In the three years that I have been chair of the board, the foundation has raised more than $11 million, which has been used to provide countless scholarships to students and program support for faculty and staff, as well as the money needed for our emergency assistance fund for students facing a crisis.

As much as I am thankful for the personal generosity of our board members, I would be remiss if I didn’t shine a light on the most important role the board plays: unwavering advocates for our mission. This is most evident in the amount of time and energy they commit to each of their committees. Whether they are members of our Real Estate, Governance/Audit, Treasurer’s,

Attronica Computers Adds $25,000 to Endowed Scholarship

Attronica Computers Inc., a technology services company with offices in

Gaithersburg, Maryland, and Glen Allen, Virginia, made a new $25,000 gift in April for its endowed scholarship.

The Attronica Computers Inc. Endowed Scholarship is open to any student with financial need, including Dream Act students. This new contribution almost doubles the size of this endowed scholarship fund, which will increase the income available each year to make scholarship awards to students.

or Development Committee, the board members give tirelessly of their time and talent, and I am so appreciative of their wise counsel and guidance. In particular, I want to thank Bill Hard, Michael Yuen, Mike Paukstitus, and Sally Rudney, the chairs of each of our committees, all of whom set the bar high for themselves and their commit-tee members.

Long after my chairmanship is over, I will remain a proud MC alumnus. As such, I will continue to support and advocate on behalf of the College, ensuring that students who come to the College as I did, leave as I did: well prepared to meet the challenges and the opportunities that lay ahead of them.

2016 MC Commencement Recognizes Graduates and Honorary Degree RecipientsPublic Radio Host Kojo Nnamdi Delivers Commencement Address

On Friday, May 20, we welcomed hundreds of Montgomery College

students from all three campuses, including apprenticeship graduates from the Workforce Development and Continuing Education programs, to our Rockville Campus to participate in commencement. Of the almost 2,800 students who completed their degree or certification this year, 901 students took part in commencement. This year’s commencement speaker was Kojo Nnamdi, host of the Kojo Nnamdi Show and The Politics Hour on WAMU.

In addition to an honorary degree for Mr. Nnamdi, three other honorary degrees were awarded to long-time champions of the College’s mission: Georgette “Gigi” Godwin, president and CEO of the Mont-gomery County Chamber of Commerce; Kevin Sexton, president and CEO, Holy Cross Health; and Dr. Kenneth Weiner, professor emeritus of mathematics, Montgomery College.

Ms. Godwin is a long-time supporter of education in Montgomery County and served on Montgomery College’s Board of Trustees from 2006 to 2011. Ms. Godwin

COMMENCEMENT 2016

has been a loyal and generous donor to the foundation, focusing on ensuring our students interested in pursuing a career in public safety have the necessary scholarships to attend Montgomery College.

In 2014, under Kevin Sexton’s leader-ship, the Holy Cross Germantown Hospital opened, the first new hospital in Mont-gomery County in 35 years, serving a million residents. During Mr. Sexton’s tenure, Holy Cross Health has provided more than $1.1 million in support of health sciences scholar-ships and nursing programs to Montgomery College and through the Who Will Care? Fund for Nurse Education. The foundation is very grateful to Mr. Sexton and Holy Cross Health for this partnership, which benefits our students and our entire community.

Dr. Weiner retired in 2008 after serving for 37 years as a faculty member. During his tenure at the College, Dr. Weiner served as department chair research associate in the Office of Planning and Institutional Re-search. In addition to educating our stu-dents, Dr. Weiner and his wife, Myra Turoff, are also long-standing donors who support an array of programs and scholarships.

We congratulate all of the honorary degree recipients. Most importantly, we congratu-late our graduates, many of whom were the recipients of scholarships provided by our generous and visionary donors.

Emergency Assistance Funds Keep Students in School

W here do students like Iman, Michael, and Paul go for help in times of crisis?

More and more, MC students encounter unforeseeable cir-cumstances that interrupt—or abruptly end—their pursuit of an education. With this in mind, the Montgomery College Founda-tion created the Student Emergency Fund, which is designed to provide emergency assistance to students at risk of not continuing their education because of unexpected financial dilemmas.

According to a White House report, “Low-income students face barriers to college success at every stage of the education pipeline, from elementary school through post-secondary educa-tion, sometimes in spite of their academic achievements.” College completion is a primary goal of Montgomery College and the Montgomery College Foundation, which provides the resources necessary to ensure that students who attend the College fulfill their educational goals.

As of April 2016, the Montgomery College Foundation has provided more than $20,000 to numerous students who turn to it for help. For purposes of this article, the names of the students have been changed to protect their privacy, but their stories exemplify the types of requests the foundation receives.

When Iman shared her story with staff members, the founda-tion provided her with the funds to get her documents replaced. The foundation stepped in and assisted Michael in purchasing new books and provided Paul with living assistance so he could

continue his studies while managing his other mounting personal responsibilities.

The Montgomery College Foundation is committed to sup-porting MC students so that their education is not interrupted. Whether a student is pursuing an associate’s degree before trans-ferring to a four-year university or receiving job training in order to find employment, the foundation steps in when other resources are exhausted.

The Student Emergency Fund is supported by generous donors like Linda and Bob Youngentob. As an adjunct professor of busi-ness and economics, a member of the foundation’s board of direc-tors, and co-chair of the MC2020 Campaign, Linda understands the importance of a safety net to help students stay on track to complete their education. For these students, a small grant can make all the difference in keeping them in college. To address this issue, Linda and Bob specifically designated a portion of their recent gift for the emergency assistance program.

Iman, an international student taking classes at Montgomery College’s Rockville Campus, was living with an aunt who thought Iman was becoming too “Americanized.” To maintain more control over her, the aunt stole all of Iman’s legal documents.

Michael, a health sciences student, was the victim of a car break-in in which his backpack containing all his books was stolen.

When Paul’s sister was murdered and his young nephew shot, the 23-year-old Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus student faced daunting family responsibilities in addition to concerns about how he would finish his education.

Employees Share Their Many Gifts

That sentiment is what led Carlo and Mary Sanchez to establish their endowed

scholarship last year. Carlo, public safety training officer at Montgomery College, is a graduate and an employee of the College for more than 15 years. Mary graduated from the College with a degree in surgical technology and nursing. They met as students at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus and were married a few years later.

Mary was an international student from Trinidad and Tobago who came to Mont-gomery College and found a community that was welcoming and inclusive. “The diversity of Montgomery College helped me during the transition to my new home in the United States. Meeting students from all over the world who were adjusting to life here helped me tremendously,” says Mary.

Seeing the growth of the Health Sciences Department helped Mary choose to study surgical technology, for which she was the valedictorian of her class, and then she studied nursing. She credits the faculty, along with the state-of-the-art learning environment, with helping her to be successful in her current role as an operating room nurse.

Carlo was the first in his family to attend college. He found Montgomery College to be the perfect transition from high school to higher education. “I didn’t have much guidance with the basics of how to get into college and how to pay for it, but the faculty and staff were so great and helpful to me,” Carlo remembers. He began working in the Safety and Security Department on the Takoma Park/Silver

Spring Campus to help pay for school, and he also received a foundation scholarship.

“The scholarship really helped me dur-ing my first year at Montgomery College. I was amazed that someone would actually provide money to help me go to school,” says Carlo. He transferred to the University of Maryland, where he further pursued his education while continuing to work at Montgomery College. “Montgomery Col-lege provided so much to me: an education, a career, and I even met my wife here. I couldn’t imagine Montgomery College not being part of my life. This is the main reason I give back through payroll deduc-tions.” Carlo was recently appointed to the Maryland House of Delegates and credits Montgomery College with helping him figure out his path in life.

“If we can help other students find their way and follow their dreams, then it is well worth it,” says the couple.

This is why Carlo and Mary Sanchez, along with many more alumni and College employees, continue to give back.

“ Montgomery College had such a large impact on our lives. We wanted to make sure that other students

were able to take advantage of that. ”
