Finishing StrongMen's hoops shows their stuff in League Tournament

In a season of ups and downs ofWhich critics had high expectations, the men's hoops team pulled to-gether for a strong finish. Althoughtheir 18-12 record was not as glori-ous as some had anticipated, theycame together for an impressiveshowing in the Patriot League Tour-nament, before losing in the finalson a last second shot. The 90-91 'Saders got off to a dis-

appointing start with back-to-backlosses to Western Michigan andHartford. These two poorly execut-ed games were answered with spec-tacular victories over Big East foesBoston College (76-69, OT) andProvidence (85-84). In front of ajampacked Hart Center crowd forthe BC game, the Crusaders seemedto be ahead for good with five sec-onds remaining. When a BC guardsuccessfully launched a three-point-er, another dissatisfying loss ap-peared inevitable. In what proved tobe a pivotal point in the season, thecharacter of 24th year CoachGeorge Blaney's purple squad wouldnot allow the momentum to shift inBC's favor, blowing them away forthe 7 point victory. The inaugural season of Patriot

League play began with three vic-tories over Lafayette, Bucknell andthe Cadets of West Point. The win-ning streak ended with a frustratingloss at Fordham. Using that defeat

as their fuel, the Crusaders avengedthe loss with a victory atop Mt. St.James to end the Ram's 14 gamewinning streak (which was the sec-ond longest in the nation). One se-ries that disenchanted the Purplewas two loses to a less skilled Lehighsquad; the Crusaders lost the firstcontest after being ahead by 19.Going into the league tournament,

HC's record was 16-11, borderlinefor post-season play. The Tourna-ment hosts, the Crusaders openedwith an easy win over a scrappy Col-gate squad. Provided with the confi-dence and determination to win, aswell as the added incentive of beat-ing a team that they had lost totwice, HC went aggressively into thesecond round match-up against a

cocky Lehigh team. The Crusadersoutlasted the Engineers in an emo-tion-filled contest to advance to thefinals and keep hopes of an NCAA bidalive. In a nationally televised event,HC showcased their talents, over-coming a 14 point deficit to takeFordham into overtime. Without theexperience of seniors Jim Nairusand Aaron Jordan, who had fouledout, the Crusader squad was out ofsync in the overtime period. Thegame went down to the wire withFordham hitting a last second threepointer to put the game, the cham-pionship and post-season play out ofreach.By Jim Nairus

Sticking Together__Despite tough schedule, Cruskaters show promise

The 1990-1991 Crusader Hockeyteam had a year to remember! No,they didn't win the league; it wasn'teven a winning season, but thesquad showed lots of promise. Ledby Captain Tom Sartorelli and SteveMurphy, the only seniors, the groupbecame more than a team; it was atight knit unit. Although facing apowerful schedule, the Crusadersplayed extremely well, enjoying a.500 record at semester break.Combining a wealth of young talentwith disciplined senior leadership,H.C. showed tremendous potential.Highlights of the season included bigwins over cross-town rival Assump-tion and St. AnseIm. Perhaps morenotable were the tough overtimelosses suffered at the hands of the

league's elite. Holy Cross enduredheartbreaking defeats to A.I.C. (4-3), Bowdoin (2-10) and Middlebury(4-3), proving that they could skatewith the best in the ECAC. On amore memorable note were SteveMurphy's first two collegiate goals, scored against Colby. He alsoslipped two past Fairfield in his lastcareer game.

Minding the net this year for theCruskaters were three hard-workinggoalies, "Mean" Dean Gianukus,Matt Poska and Mike Kendrot. Deanrecorded a high saves percentage(88%) enroute to five wins. Poaskaadded two wins, while also maintain-ing a high saves percentage."Kendy" posted a shutout againstFairfield for a smashing victory.

The hard-pressing team was led inthe scoring category by sophomoreMike "King" Clancy. Joining him onthe top scorers list are co-captainPete Verrier, Matt Cushing, andfreshmen Mike Shustack and SeanMurphy. A strong nucleus of experi-enced defenders maintained an in-timidating presence on the ice. WithTom Sartorelli at the helm, theyworked hard to keep their oppo-nents out of the zone. Helping out onD were Lance "Duke" Brady, Co-Captain Dan Logan, Brian Clyne,George Ross, Andy "Turtle" Tourte-lette, and Doug Hayden.

Joining the defense with formida-ble efforts on the ice were the re-maining forwards on the squad. As agroup, they hustled to win everygame for the Crusaders. These for-wards were Brian Shea, John "Bang-Bang" Mattson, Steve Murphy, Joe"Caddy" O'Conor, Matt "Ice" Po-tier, Dan "Digger" Connolly, Jeff"Can't Be Scorin" Morin, GeorgeMarron, Matt Dudley, Mark Vergilliand Chooch Fukuda. Driven o ExcellenceFor women's swimmers and HC divers, hard work pays

There's more to success than justa winning season. The Holy CrossWomen swimmers proved thisthrough their endurance in a toughseason as the new members of thehighly competitive Patriot League.Despite the challenge presented bythe large size of teams such asArmy, Fordham, and the Universityof Connecticut, the smaller HolyCross Swim Team made waves withoutstanding individualperformances. The team picked up an invaluable

group of freshman this year. Amongthem were Tracy Juan and KathleenKeating, who added depth to theteam's breastroke talents. AmyBrayton, Laura Molinari, Laura Ho-bin, and Polly O'Brian providedstrength and stamina in the free-style events. Also, Alyssa "The Fly-Swatter" Bates established hermark in the 200 yd. fly and BrendaDonohue excelled in the 200 yd.backstroke. Finally, the internationalconnection, Suzanne Broker, fromHolland, contributed substantially tothe team. These swimmers became a part of

the team of talented returning letterwinners, which included distancefreestyler Maura "Daisy" Walsh, andsprinters Sara "The Snail" Naill andAmanda "I've played that before"Ferry. Also, the versatile Laura Wha-len "magically glided" through suchevents as the 200 yd. IM, 100 and

200 yd. fly. Returning second se-mester from the hills of Spain wasthe team's secret "Fly" weapon, Ju-lie Sippel.

After being drenched in chlorinefor two hours a day, swimming50,000 yd.s a week for over fivemonths, it all came down to a roadtrip to Fordham University for theinfamous Patriot League Champion-ship Meet. It was a time for junior JillAddesa, the team's Most ValuablePlayer, to prove herself in the gruel-ing 500 yd. freestyle. With the inspir-ing words of encouragement fromcoach Barry Parenteau, Addesa wasable to claim victory in the stroke forstroke race over her Lafayette com-petitor. Other impressive swims ofthe weekend came from the team's

Most lmpoved Swimmer, Heidi Mo-gavero, who finished in the top eightof the 400 yd. IM, 100 and 200 yd.breastroke. Also senior tri-captainCarrie Flannagan ended an out-standing career by breaking the twominute barrier in the 200 yd. free-style as well as placing sixteenthoverall in the meet.

It was a season filled with teamspirit and enthusiasm which beganon the stairs of the football stadium, continued on the "Hey-La-De-La"road trips, survived wild swimmingfestivities and culminated on thebeaches of St. Croix.byCarrie Flanagen

Pooling Their Talents E Strong individual efforts provide team backbone

What a year. What a big, burlyyear. The Holy Cross Men's Swim-ming Team eagerly returned to theHart Center pool and left some oftheir opponents standing on theblocks, while others were found atthe bottom of the pool. The mostimpressive performances by theteam as a whole were its spectacularwins against W.P.I. and Clark Univer-sity. Despite the loss of many valu-able swimmers last year and a toughPatriot League schedule, the teamworked hard in practice and itshowed in individual performances. The team's successes also are at-tributed to the knowledge and dedi-cation of coach Paul Parenteau. The team was led by senior co-

captains Kevin "Ducky" Healy andKevin Walsh. The "Duck", as he is

known to his closest friends, contrib-uted to the team in the sprint free-style events. Personal best swims inthe 50, 100, and 200 freestylepaced the team at the PatriotLeague Championships and the NewEnglands. In addition, Kevin's lead-ership and work ethic cannot beoverlooked. Walsh holds the schoolrecord in four events, he placed inthe finals and consolations in thebreastroke events at both PatriotLeague Championships and the NewEnglands. He also added a personalbest in the 200 I.M. sonal bests in the 200, 500, and1000 freestyle stunned many im-pressive opponents. The Most Valuable Swimmer

award went to junior Mike Walsh(who by some stroke of luck is norelation to Kevin, Walsh that is. Ke-vin Healy's relatives are very proud).Walsh shattered three school re-cords in the 50, 100, and 200 free-style on his way to two appearancesat the New Englands. Most Improvedwent to sophomore Brian Brandt, who led the divers in total points andalso added a new one-meter schoolrecord.Juniors Ed Kubosiak, Chris Cote,

and Jim Shea gave new meaning tothe term dedication. Cote and Sheaeach gave their all to the team, knowing that they'd only be here forone semester due to J.Y.A. adven-tures, while Kubosiak slugged it outthe entire year; a vital point-earnerin each of the breastroke events.Sophomore team Bill Potter and hisfriend Kevin/Vinny Carolan got latestarts on the season but were ableto pull it all together for some fan-tastic performances secondsemester. The team extends a very spe-

Duck walks . . . thigh burningsprints . . mile and a half timed run(ugh!) . . . body fat percentages . .hill runs. . . crunches. . . squats. . .and lots of sweat. For the entirespring, summer and fall of 1990, theLady Crusaders faced these torturesdaily. Although it was tough and wesacrificed a lot, TOGETHER we pre-vailed and loved every minute of it.The secret of our success goes be-

yond our visible athletic ability andcourt skills- it comes from within. The love and togetherness we feelas a team fuels the desire and inten-sity we express playing basketball. This fiery passion for the game cata-pulted the Lady Crusaders into theprogram's most successful seasonever.

Every goal we set during the pre-

season was achieved: we won 25games, the most in Holy Cross histo-ry. With a record of 12-0, we finishedfirst in the Patriot League and wenton to win the tournament. Our teamreceived an at large bid into theNCAA Tournament and won our firstround game. We were ranked 30thin the nation by the AP Final Poll.(Not bad for a tiny Catholic schoolthat everyone thought was a nun-nery!)Two of the greatest highlights of

the season were the 78-67 victoryover #3 Rutgers, who was undefeat-ed at the time and defeating Mary-land 81-74 in the first round of theNCAA Tournament. Both of thegames were held at a packed HartCenter, breaking attendance re-cords for a women's game. Loyal fan
