HappinessatschoolThebeginningofanewyearisagreattimetotakestockofyourworklife.Wereyouhappyorunhappyatwork?Whatwouldyouliketochange?It’simportanttoevaluatebecausehowyoufeelatworkhassuchalargeinfluenceonyouatworkANDathome.Whenyou’rehappyatwork,youhavebetterjobperformanceandmorecareersuccess.Youalsohavebetterhealthandahappierprivatelife.Unfortunately,mostpeoplelookbackandthinkexclusivelyintermsofwhatwentwrong.Thethingstheyshouldhavedone.Thegoalstheyoughttohaveachieved.Theprogressthatdidn’tcome.Wegainmuchofourhappinessatwork(andinlife)byappreciatingthegoodthingswehaveanddo.Sure,youshouldalsomakesuretoimproveyourcircumstancesandaddressanyproblemsbutitisjustasimportanttobeabletoappreciatethethingsthatdowork.Thisishard.Negativitybiasisoneofthemostwell-establishedpsychologicalphenomenaanditmeansquitesimplythatourmindsdevotemorementalfocusandcognitiontothebadthanthegood.Ourthoughtsautomaticallygotoproblems,annoyances,threatsandfearsbutrememberingandappreciatingthegoodinourlivestakeseffortandfocus.Ithinkyoucanachievemuchmorebyturningthataround180degrees,sohere’smysuggestionforalittlenewyear’sexerciseinhappinessatwork.Thinkbackatyourworklifein2016andanswerthefollowing10questions.Itworksbest,ifyoutakesometimetodoitandifyouwritedownyouranswers:• Whatwentreallywellforyouatworkin2016?• Whatdidyoudothatyouwereproudof?• Whodidyoumakeadifferenceforatwork?• Whatnewskillshaveyoulearnedprofessionally?• Howhaveyougrownanddevelopedpersonallyatwork?• Whohashelpedyououtatworkin2016?• Whohaveyouadmiredprofessionally?• Which5thingsfromyourworklifein2016wouldyoulikemoreofin2017?• Which5thingsfromyourworklifein2016wouldyoulikelessofin2017?• Whatwillyouspecificallydotobecomehappieratworkin2017?Mostpeoplethinkthattheymustworkhardtobecomesuccessful–andthatsuccesswillmakethemhappy.They’remostlikelywrong.Thisyear,makehappinessatworkyour#1careergoal–becausebeinghappyatworkwillmakeyoumoresuccessfulinyourcareer.
