Welcome to Encounters with Books / Encuentro con libros, an exhibition in an artist's book for IMPACT 10 Printmaking Conference, Santander, Spain 2018
Artists from the following countries were invited to participate in this collaborative book: Australia, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, UK and USA. They have sent their own encounters with books to share with you here at the Biblioteca Central Cantabria in Santander. The aim of this publication is to introduce conversations and ideas about artists' books and books to the library's visitors.
In this book you will find the artists' ideas and responses to their 'encounters' through: the act of reading, the relationship between the book and the viewer/reader, the actions of characters within books, or something from an artist's favourite book. There are also homages to artists' books, collections of books, making books, literature, and factual publications. Many thanks to Jayne Marshall for English - Spanish translations.
We have published this book of encounters as a free artwork for you to take away with you. It has been published by Impact Press at the Centre for Fine Print Research, UWE Bristol, UK. Bienvenido a Encuentro con libros/Encounters with Books, una exposición dentro de un libro de artista creado para IMPACT 10 Conferencia Internacional Multidisciplinar de Gráfica, Santander, España 2018
Artistas de los países: Australia, Brasil, Francia, Alemania, Italia, México, Noruega, Polonia, Rusia, España, Suecia, Suiza, Países Bajos, Reino Unido y Estados Unidos fueron invitados a participar en este libro colaborativo. Mandaron sus propios encuentros con libros para compartirlos con vosotros aquí en la Biblioteca Central de Cantabria en Santander. El propósito de esta publicación es provocar conversaciones y generar ideas sobre libros y libros de artista con los visitantes a la biblioteca.
En este libro se encuentran las ideas y las respuestas de los artistas a sus ‘encuentros’ por: el acto de leer, la relación entre el libro y el lector, las acciones de los personajes en los libros, o simplemente del libro favorito del artista. Además hay homenajes a libros de artistas, colecciones de libros, haciendo libros, literatura y libros no-ficción. Gracias a Jayne Marshall por las traducciones del inglés al español.
Hemos publicado este libro de encuentros como una obra de arte gratis para llevar, es publicado por Impact Press en el Centro de Fine Print Research, UWE Bristol (Universidad del Oeste de Inglaterra), Reino Unido. Per me un libro è come una scultura. Oppure una casa: dentro ci sono luoghi, angoli, spazi.
Il libro è un contenitore che si espande e si moltiplica con la fantasia; ho fatto libri chiusi, pagine legate, pagine serrate. Molti visitatori dinanzi a questi libri (Blind Red Book series) sono tentati di sciogliere i nodi, vogliono vedere dentro, sfogliare, anche se si evince dall’esterno che non contengono niente.
Possiedo una collezione di oltre 700 libri d’artista. Di tanto in tanto, li sfoglio tutti, preferendoli dal primo all’ultimo. ------------
For me, a book is like a sculpture. Or perhaps a house: inside there are places, corners, spaces.
The book is a container that expands and multiplies with the imagination; I have made closed books, with bound pages, with fastened pages. Looking at these books (Blind Red Book series) many are tempted to untie the knots, they want to see inside, to leaf through, even if it is evident from the outside that they contain nothing.
I have a collection of over 700 artists’ books. From time to time, I browse through all of them, preferring each one, from the first to the very last. ------------
Para mí un libro es como una escultura. O quizás una casa: dentro hay sitios, rincones, espacios.
El libro es un contenedor que expande y multiplica con la imaginación; he hecho libros cerrados, con las hojas ligadas, con las hojas pegadas. Mirando esos libros (los de la serie Blind red book), mucha gente quiere desenredar los nudos, quiere ver dentro, hojear, incluso cuando es evidente que no contienen nada.
Tengo una colección de más de 700 libros de artista. De vez en cuando, echo un vistazo a todos los libros y prefiero cada uno, desde el primer hasta el último.

Autobibliography
Madrid, 2016: One of those aimless walks. Alone, and also lonely. Out of nowhere, it writes itself across the blue Velazquian sky: the first line, a dangling thread. This is how it chooses you.
Bristol, 2009: One palm stays resting on the cover, as if in prayer. He turns to you: “Why would anyone bother to write anything ever again?” A grin; a challenge. I told you!
Hay-on-Wye, 2002: 50 pence. Minus the dust jacket, spotted here and there with damp - yet still it gleams. So strange, and so perfect. This is how it begins.

Madrid, 2016: Un paseo sin objetivo, sola y también sola. Surgiendo de la nada, se escribe en el cielo azul velazqueño – la primera frase, un hilo suelto. Así es como te elige.
Bristol, 2009: Su palma posada sobre la portada, como si estuviera rezando. Se vuelve hacia ti: “¿Por qué querría alguien volver a es-cribir nunca?” Una sonrisita. Un reto. ¡Ya te dije!
Hay-on-Wye, 2002: 50 peniques. Sin la sobrecubierta, manchado aquí y allá con puntitos húmedos, aun así, brilla. Tan raro, y tan perfecto. Así es como empieza.
