What could be possible?

Elba is the island where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled after renouncing power at Fontainebleau. Napoleon, accompanied by a contingent of one thousand men and entitled Emperor of Elba by the Allies, introduced many governmental reforms in his new homeland in the habit of what he accomplished in Europe. Yet as history would later go on to record, it was apparent that in his mind he was still the Emperor of a much larger physical territory. Although Bonaparte’s empire

was significantly reduced, he did not let that hinder his ambition. Where Napoleon was mentally was more significant than where he was physically in his journey toward the goal of self actualization. His work on Elba could have been interpreted as a weak signal by the Allies, indicating his desire to retake the status that he lost earlier. Elba is the modern projection of state of mind. What if the Allies could have known how Bonaparte perceived himself without having to interpret his physical actions? What if you could express yourself by injecting senses into an experience? What if you had total information about someone else’s sensed experience? The stage on which you perform your life so that others may interpret, no longer contained by language, music, art or pictures, is truly felt with empathy. What if we each had the opportunity to escape our own Elba’s together or conversely the ability to feel Napoleon’s raw ambition and see his imagination at work?

You dare take that!

Haven’t been home for dinner on Tuesdays in ages! With my Blackberry safely out of sight in my back pocket I sit down for dinner with my wife and my son. I promised I’d shut if off while at dinner, but my guys are working hard at finishing up a project and

I want to make sure I’m available in case they need me. My wife tells me about how her library project is going and reminds me we need to go shopping for diapers tomorrow night. I’m having a lot of fun. My mind is nowhere near work. Nicolas has so many new words to say. I’ve longed for this day for weeks now. “How’s your project going?” she asks. Before I get a chance to open my mouth, my Blackberry makes its present felt. It must’ve recognized that my mind literally switched to work mode and it will now synch up with all the emails I got since the last time I was thinking about work.

She steps out of the car for her first site visit. She’s never been in this part of town and she’s a bit weary of the fact that her demanding client decided to come with to see what she thought of this location. She reluctantly passes her client the small digital display which wirelessly allows the client to see what she sees in her contact lenses.

She still remembers the thrill she felt the first day she signed up to this service that allowed her to imagine with her eyes open. She hated that before her physical surroundings were interfering with her imagination rather than providing a context for her imagination to take shape. She quickly imagines a big majestic entrance to what the client wants to become more than just a dental office in this hip downtown up and coming neighborhood. The client sees this on her display and quickly dismisses it as a bit too much. After a few “iterations” they decide on the big gestures of the space.

By the time she returns to her office, she already has 2 offers from contractors bidding on the manufacturing of the doors. She opens up AutoCAD and imports the model from her mind to start refining it.

He steps into his New York apartment and slowly makes his way to the couch. He’s had an amazing night with Natalie. She had invited him upstairs but before they exited the elevator she got a call from work that a client account that she was managing has just become do or die and she was due at the client side across country first thing in the morning.

She kissed him goodnight and promised she’d make it up to him. But he couldn’t wait. All he could imagine was her naked. He turned on the app he just purchased from Playboy.com, turned on the music and the lights and there she was dancing for him in his living room via his contact lenses.

Dad as the ultimate ghost buster

In history class our assignment last night was to build a fort in our room and come back today and tell the class what we learned. It’s

Nicolas’ turn to present. He has the wackiest stories to tell and I’m sure this one won’t disap’m sure this one won’t disapm sure this one won’t disap’t disapt disapdisappoint.

He speaks about how he built a fort on top of his bed to keep the dragons at bay. But his real story is about when he tried to go back to sleep for some reason the moment he would close

his eyes the dragons kept flying into the castle. His restlessness woke his dad up from the couch. He suggested his dad plugs himself into Nicolas’ Elba device. Nicolas agrees and instantly his dad appears in his imagination fighting the dragons one by one. I’m going to go home tonight and ask my parents to sign us up and throw away that 3D TV!

Greg doesn’t remember the last time he actually bought music, but he trusted his friend sitting now beside him in the subway that this was a really cool new band and that it really is his style of music. He cranks up the volume and 30 seconds into the first song turns to his buddy and yells way too loud: “This is dope dude!”

He feels inspired. He’s in the moment and starts playing the air drums. Almost instantly on his contact lenses he sees the subway car floor become a stage surrounded by a crowd larger than he’s

ever been a part of. The drums have the Yamaha logo front and center and he is rocking them really good.

He offers one of the headphones to his friend. After all, this was his find. John’s thing is the air guitar and he quickly appears to the left of the stage playing what else, but a Yamaha guitar. John, again way too loud, screams from the top of his lungs: “My parents told me when they were young they had to take drugs to feel this good!”

Movie dreaming

It’s been a long day. Julie walks home slowly. She’s tired but not defeated. She’s was at 3 auditions today but none of them seemed to be promising. She’s either too fat or not fat enough. She either smiles too much or sobs out of synch with her scene partner. Not to mention her accent. She was warned that breaking into the movie business will be

tough, but she never expected this. She gets home, but because she is now confused whether she needs to eat more or less she decided to take a vitamin pill instead of sitting down for a proper dinner. Before her stomach has enough time to break down the pill, she crashes on the couch. She is rudely awakened 7 hours later (even though it only feels like after only 5 minutes) by the annoying ringtone of her phone. She had never gotten around to changing the ringtone, nor would she be technically capable to do so had she had the time. It’s her agent. “I loved it!” he screams. “Excuse me?!” says Julie. “Your dream! I just got it! You did a perfect Meryl Streep! I sent it over to the director already. I think the part is in the bank! I smell Oscar!”.

It took Julie a couple of minutes to realize what just happened. She has subscribed to this service which would send her and whoever else she chose her dreams as a movie reel every morning. She must’ve rehearsed to much playing Meryl in her autobiographic movie that she had a dream about the audition she was only scheduled to have later in the week. “Great!” she jumps out of bed. By the time she comes out from the washroom she sees she has a message on her answering machine. It’s her therapist.

Orchestral writing

Evelyn Glennie is a deaf, world renowned percussionist. She can’t hear the music, but she can feel it. She walks barefoot from one instrument to the next and she leaves her audiences speechless.

Today she’s premiering a world tour. But this time she will travel light. No big percussion instruments. She signed up to this service that will allow her to simply plug her beautiful mind into the Elba device and convert the melodies in her mind into actual sound. In fact, for the second part of the concert she will invite a local musical prodigy on the stage with her and they will jam together simply by having their minds plugged into the audio system of the opera. I can’t wait!

Alzheimer cure 2.0

My grandma has had Alzheimer pretty much for as long as I can remember. It has gotten a lot worse since my grandfather passed. Up until a month ago, you never knew who you were going to get when we visited her for our Sunday gettogethers.

My mom signed her up to this new service though. When she sees you or when you talk to her about

something, if her brain cannot find “you” or “what you’re talking about” in the hippocampus (the area of the brain where recent memory is stored and retrieved from and which Alzheimer attacks), it can tap into this service that searches an online storage of your recent events. A device that she wears captures video or audio memories throughout my grandma’s day and stores/indexes them in this online storage for later retrieval. I’ve never seen my grandma so happy to see and hear us in a long long while!

Another Day in Paradise

It was my last time outside the wire. In one week I would finally be getting out of here. Not that I really minded it. The game had just become stale and I was ready for a change. I mounted up with the rest of my unit and began the dedious task of house clearing. This patrol was

no different than any other. Clear this street of insurgents and move on to the next. If anything suspisious was found, like an improvised explosive device, call in the guys with the skills. It was getting late in the day and the boys were getting tired looking forward to some much needed rack time. One last street. The unit had gone months without incident, but two weeks ago fortunes turned. On that day nothing much seemed out of the ordinary to the casual observer.

We turned the corner and it was the same old scene, but I felt something was different. Bombed out houses and just a few people milling about. A red sensor started blinking in my line of sight. Goosepumps and a chill ran through me. I halted the team. The pulstating red blob started to go nuts. I motioned for everyone to get down. Something was up. Elba was recongizing similar patterns in the surroundings around me as two weeks ago, compiling those patterns with my bio feedback and warning me. Assessing the information, I ordered no one to go near any of the structures that surrounded us and radioed for the local bomb squad. Sure enough, two houses down the bomb squad found a couple of devices that would have ended my tour one week short of a happy ending.

Sometime ago we trained ourselves into believing that imagination gets in the way. How many pitches did you hear that start with: Close your eyes and imagine this…We close our eyes because we’ve told ourselves that imagination belongs somewhere in the back of our mind, it is restricted to our dreams or our moments of complete intoxication.

At the same time there are people walking among us we call sometimes autistic, sometimes savants. They have learned to think in pictures. They have learned to store and interpret their reality in pictures. Likewise, we have allowed and more often demanded that we have access to all the information possible. An influx of data ensued that is making us more and more turn off our email client and automatically send to junk mail anything that was not personally addressed to us. We are inundated with information. All the information at all times. Just in case we need it. Our devices and our data has only 2 modes: on or off. If it’s on we can’t manage it. If it’s off we’re worried about what we are missing and are becoming more and more superficially involved in our other tasks to the point where most of us can be safely diagnosed with ADD.

And in all of this, the device that we should rely on more and more for the benefit of our evolutionary path is getting left behind. We use our brain less and less and we have outsourced our decision making ability to others.

Elba aims to change all this. Elba believes in the power of our brain and our mind to shape our future. Elba is composed of three parts: a device that receives brain signals from all areas of your brain; a collection of specialized apps (depending on where the signals are generated, how intense they are, etc.) that can make meaning out of those signals and contact lenses which can display visual interpretations of that mean

ing overlaid on top of what your eyes can see. The specialized apps would be developed by partner enterprises which have deep expertise in one knowledge domain.

Elba is less about bringing the external into your physical reality, but rather bringing imagination and sense into a new physical reality. It is about how small changes in pieces of data can change entire systems.
