Exodus 3:1-22

Now Moseswas tendingthe flock of

Jethro his father-in-law, the priest ofMidian, and he ledthe flock to the farside of the desert andcame to Horeb, themountain ofGod.2There the

angel of the Lord appeared to him inflames of fire from within a bush. Mosessaw that though the bush was on fire it didnot burn up.3So Moses thought, "I will goover and see this strange sight why thebush does not burn up."4When the Lord saw that he had gone

over to look, God called to him from with-in the bush, "Moses! Moses!"4And Mosessaid, "Here I am."5"Do not come any clos-er," God said. "Take off your sandals, forthe place where you are standing is holyground."6Then he said, "I am the God ofyour father, the God of Abraham, the Godof Isaac and the God of Jacob." At this,Moses hid his face, because he was afraidto look at God.7The Lord said, "I have indeed seen the

misery of my people in Egypt. I have

heard them crying out because of theirslave drivers, and I am concerned abouttheir suffering.8So I have come down torescue them from the hand of theEgyptians and to bring them up out of thatland into a good and spacious land, a landflowing with milk and honey—the homeof the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites,Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.9Andnow the cry of the Israelites has reachedme, and I have seen the way the Egyptiansare oppressing them.10So now, go. I amsending you to Pharaoh to bring my peo-ple the Israelites out of Egypt."11ButMoses said to God, "Who am I, that Ishould go to Pharaoh and bring theIsraelites out of Egypt?"12And God said,"I will be with you. And this will be thesign to you that it is I who have sent you:When you have brought the people out ofEgypt, you[a] will worship God on thismountain."13Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to

the Israelites and say to them, 'The God ofyour fathers has sent me to you,' and theyask me, 'What is his name?' Then whatshall I tell them?"14God said to Moses, "Iam who I am.[b] This is what you are tosay to the Israelites: 'I am has sent me toyou.' "15God also said to Moses, "Say tothe Israelites, 'The Lord, the God of yourfathers—the God of Abraham, the God of

Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent meto you.' This is my name forever, the nameby which I am to be remembered fromgeneration to generation.16"Go, assemble the elders of Israel and

say to them, 'The Lord, the God of yourfathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac andJacob appeared to me and said: I havewatched over you and have seen what hasbeen done to you in Egypt.17And I havepromised to bring you up out of your mis-ery in Egypt into the land of theCanaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites,Hivites and Jebusites—a land flowingwith milk and honey.'

18"The elders of Israel will listen to you. Then you and the elders are to go to theking of Egypt and say to him, 'The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us.Let us take a three-day journey into thedesert to offer sacrifices to the Lord ourGod.'19But I know that the king of Egyptwill not let you go unless a mighty handcompels him.20So I will stretch out myhand and strike the Egyptians with all thewonders that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.21"And I will make the Egyptians favor-

ably disposed toward this people, so thatwhen you leave you will not go empty-handed.22Every woman is to ask herneighbor and any woman living in her

house for articles of silver and gold andfor clothing, which you will put on yoursons and daughters. And so you will plun-der the Egyptians."If you have ever read missionary biogra-

phies, they are full of stories of peoplewho have given up a normal life and inmany cases extraordinary careers, to go toother parts of the world to tell peopleabout Jesus. I guess most of us are famil-iar with the film Chariots of Fire: aboutEric Liddell, the runner who refused tocompete on the Sabbath and so was unableto win the 100 meters Gold Medal in theOlympics. But I wonder how many peoplerealize that not only did he give up thatmedal, but a couple of years later he wentoff to China as a missionary, giving up hisathletic ambitions altogether. I was givena book of biographies a few years ago byIsabel Kuhn, who was also a missionary inChina. One of the biographies is of a mannamed Fraser, who was a brilliant musi-cian, able to memorize whole symphoniesand concertos, yet who gave up allthought of fame and fortune on the con-cert stage in order to serve God in preach-ing the gospel to the people of China. Andthere are countless other examples. If you would like to have the entire mes-

sage please request it at: [email protected]

Wall Street ProtestIt’s More Than You Think

There is a belief among some that those earning over $1 mil-lion should pay very little in federal taxes. I’m not advo-cating that these individuals should be over taxed, but at

least should carry their share of the tax burden. Continuing to passthe burden to the middle class and the less fortunate is not theanswer, and will only lead to more problems.

Back in 1993, then President Bill Clinton invoked a modest taxon the rich. That action brought a decade of prosperity to themajority of the American people. This created a budget surplusthat was passed on to then President, George W. Bush. The sur-plus was never protected by the GOP majority by giving tax cutsto the rich, which turned out to be the wrong thing to do for thiscountry. Some say that because of the way the surplus was han-dled is the reason the economy is in this mess. Surely, what theAmerican people would like is for the party of “no” to get theirheads out of the sand, listen to the people and work with our cur-rent President.

The Wall Street protest is more than you think. We are startingto see people from all walks of life get involved in this movementbecause people are just plain tired of not being heard and beingpushed aside. People are tired of being treated like their familiesjust don’t matter.

It’s been reported that the Democratic Party moved a step clos-er to embracing the “Occupy Wall Street” movement as its ownwith the top campaign arm for House Democrats sending arounda petition urging people to “stand with” the movement.

In an email sent Monday, Democratic Congressional CampaignCommittee (DCCC) Director, Robby Mook, appealed for signa-tures to an online petition in support of those who want “to let bil-lionaires, big oil and big bankers know that we’re not going to letthe richest 1% force draconian economic policies and massive cutsto crucial programs on Main Street Americans.”

The DCCC is trying to gather 100,000 names on the petition to“send a message straight to Eric Cantor, Speaker Boehner, and therest of reckless Republican leadership in Congress.”

The appeal comes after House Majority Leader Eric Cantor andother Republicans sharply criticized the protesters on Friday. At aValues Voter Summit in Washington, Cantor said he was "increas-ingly concerned about the growing mobs occupying Wall Streetand the other cities across the country."

He described them as "the pitting of Americans againstAmericans," and scolded those who would condone them.

"Getting American back to work means fueling a culture of entre-preneurialism, a culture of competitiveness, a culture of inspira-

tion and optimism," he said. At the same summit, businessman and GOP presidential candi-

date Herman Cain called the demonstrations "anti-capitalism" and"anti-free market." On CBS' "Face the nation" on Sunday, Cainsaid it is "anti-American" to protest bankers. He said Wall Streetdidn't write the "failed economic policies."In response to Cantor, House Democratic Leader nancy Pelosi

said Cantor is being selective in his criticism of popular move-ments."I didn't hear him say anything when the Tea Party was out

demonstrating, actually spitting on members of Congress righthere in the Capitol, and he and his colleagues were putting signsin the windows encouraging them," she told ABC's "This Week."Pelosi said she backs the protesters in their message.

Former President Bill Clinton, as a guest on the DavidLetterman show, said that these marches are part of being anAmerican, but must be well-organized and guided.

In conclusion, if you are out of work, laid off, your company isdown-sizing and you are concerned about your job, or have lostyour home, these are reasons to join this movement, tell your storyand occupy a missing void.(http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/10/10/lawmakers-pick-

He’s no stranger to the State of Texas, and certainly not tothe City of Dallas. He is the former Mayor of the City ofDallas, turned united States Trade Representative. And on

last Friday he came home to Texas, visiting the State Fair of Texason Friday and Eastfield College on last Tuesday to promotePresident Obama’s American Jobs Act.

The first stop on the visit back to his home state was to givethe keynote address at the Texas Economic DevelopmentCouncil’s 50th Annual Conference in Fort Worth where he dis-cussed the impact the American Jobs Act will have on Texas’ econ-omy, once it is passed.

“From teachers to construction workers to families struggling topay their mortgage, the American Jobs Act will invest in citiesacross this state and help put Texans back to work, while also help-ing to grow and expand Texas businesses,” said Ambassador RonKirk. “In addition, the pending trade agreements with Korea,Colombia and Panama will help increase Texas exports to con-sumers around the world. These are two very real examples of howPresident Obama is working tirelessly to ensure Texas businessescontinue to have the markets and consumers available to them tosell their quality 'Made in America' goods and support more jobshere at home.”

He then traveled back to Dallas where he attended a youth live-stock show with Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson andspoke with representatives from Ford Motor Company.Afterwards, he spoke with reporters about his role as TradeAmbassador in the President’s American Jobs Act.

“Whenever the President and I talk, we discuss how the portfo-lio I have and the trade agenda can help him with his most impor-

tant objective, and that is getting the economy going and creatingjobs.”

So, when Ambassador Kirk was asked about comments thatPresident Obama does not care about people being out of work andunemployed, he had this to say, “When you think back to the elec-tion, the biggest knock on the President was that he was a commu-nity organizer. As a community organizer, his job was workingwith families who had been displaced from their jobs and helpingthem find employment. nothing that resonates with him more, there is nothing that he carries with him every day than how every-thing we do impacts a family’s ability to get a job.”

Ambassador Kirk says the President realizes there is going tobe opposition to the Jobs Act, but the American people are saying,‘do what you can do right now’ and he (the President) is willing tofight for the American people, and he is going to continue to takethis argument to the American people until we get action becauseAmerican families and American businesses need help now.

“There is going to be an election next year and there will beplenty of time to debate bi-partisan politics, but right now, we needto pass this Jobs Act,” said Ambassador Kirk. “If passed, theAmerican Jobs Act will add an additional 70,000 jobs to the Texaseconomy.”

Ambassador Kirk also used the visit to highlight Texas’ statusas America’s leading state exporter. Last year, Texas exported$207 billion in goods to the world, accounting for 17.1 percent ofTexas’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP). That same year, Texas’ topgoods export categories were computer and electronic products, chemicals, and petroleum and coal products. In 2008, the last yearfor which data is available, an estimated 795,000 jobs were sup-ported by Texas goods exports.

Texas is the third largest agricultural exporting state, shipping$6.1 billion in agricultural exports abroad or 5.6 percent of the u.S.

total in Fy 2010, according to the u.S. Department of Agriculture.Texas was the largest state exporter of cotton and linters, the thirdlargest exporter of live animals and meat, the second largestexporter of feeds and fodders, the eighth largest exporter of feedgrains, and the fourth largest exporter of wheat in 2010.

If our readers want to know how they can help the Obamaadministration pass the American Jobs Act, call their representa-tives in the House and Senate and tell them to pass the AmericanJobs Act, so we can put Americans back to work!

We are oftenquick to askfor forgive-

ness, but slow to give it.We like to think the twoare separated, but in theLord’s Prayer they areconnected. This part ofthe prayer is spoken dif-ferently by various tra-

ditions. Some say“debtors”; others say“those who trespassagainst us”; and stillothers “those who sin

against us.” Regardless of word choice, howev-er, the fact remains that this section of theprayer calls us to responsibility. We are expected to forgive others in order to

fully experience our own forgiveness. Eventhough in Christ we have received forgivenessfor our sins, we still continue to ask for forgive-ness because of the peace that comes from eachact of forgiveness.

When we forgive others, we participate inChrist’s forgiveness. When we witness thepower of forgiveness in another person’s life,we more fully feel our own forgiveness.

God requires us to forgive others because itfalls under the category of treating others howwe want to be treated: the Golden Rule.Forgiveness is a dynamic state of ongoing giv-ing and receiving. Only when we submit toour responsibility to forgive others as we askGod to forgive us can we enjoy the fullness ofCalvary. To be forgiven . . . and to forgive . . . is a gift.

Dear Dr. Hollie,

Have you ever felt likesomebody just copiesoff of you way too

much? I work with this ladywho finds a way to be like meall the time. If I get a newpurse, she will find the exactsame one or one very similar. She wears the same perfumeas me. She has even gone asfar as getting her toes paintedthe same color. I don’t know how toexplain to her that this is not flattering atall; maybe the first time or two it was, butthis has gotten out of hand. She seems tocling to me as well. I have to be reallycareful not to mention my future plans tobe anywhere because she’s shown up afew times. My other co-workers tell meI should be nervous because she’s a stalk-er. I don’t think she’s a stalker, but Idon’t think this is normal either. She’s areally sweet person, so I don’t want tohurt her feelings or anything. So do youhave any suggestions on how I can tact-fully tell her to stop trying to be me? Andjust for kicks, I really want to know ifyou’ve ever been in this situation.

Unwanted Clone

Dear Unwanted Clone,

I can certainly understandhow this can make you feeluncomfortable. you askedabout me. I’ve had this situ-ation several times; and Ihave felt very flattered by itfor a couple of reasons:

1. I am doing somethingwell enough that others wantto emulate it.

2. I have an opportunity to influencesomeone as well as speak into their lives. So, if she admires you to this degree, youcould also start talking to her about indi-viduality. Help her to find her person, her look and her own voice. you’vealready learned your lesson about nottelling her where you are going to be.That will eliminate her ability to stalkyou.

Our Churchs c h o o ll e s s o n

was “TheSuperiority ofW i s d o m ”Ecclesiastes 9:13-18. Everyonelikes a story with

a happy ending, but this one doesnot end that way.The writer of

Ecclesiastes is telling us this parablefrom the viewpoint of the activities“under the sun,” that is, on this earthwithout eternity in view. In this story, apowerful army was besieging a smallcity. If this story were a fairy tale, itwould have a happy ending. The poorbut wise man would be honored byeveryone. A statue would be erected inhis honor. He might even be elected tohigh office! But that didn’t happen.Soon his wisdom that saved the city wasforgotten, and he was forgotten as well.He went back to being a “nobody,” liv-ing in poverty. In fact, in the future, when his wisdom could have continuedto profit the little city, no one paid any

attention to what he said. The morningmessage was delivered by PastorMorgan from the subject “He is Able”Jude 24-25. What a magnificent doxol-ogy this is! Knowing the purpose Judehad in mind when he wrote this letter, this doxology takes on even greater sig-nificance. Jude was reminding his read-ers of the greatness of Jesus Christ. Ifonly they could catch that, they wouldnever be led astray by false teachers. Ifyou will remember the Word of God,build your Christian life in faith, hope, and love, exercise spiritual discernment, and commit yourself to Christ, then Hewill keep you from stumbling. Be alert! The enemy is subtle and the dangers aregreat. But the only wise God yourSavior will keep you safe and one daypresent you joyfully in glory! Theunion Hope church choir will celebratetheir Annual day Oct.23, @ 3:30 p.mthey invite all of their friends and wellwishers to join them in their celebration.Be Blessed!

Iwould love to think

that the conversation

in our prayer closet is

much more than “give me

this and give me that”. The

attitude of thanksgiving is

an important prelude to

prayer. When we lift our

hearts to God we should

thank Him for the assur-

ance we have that He will

bless us. He is honored by

our turning to Him, for this is the desire of the heart

of God. Through our act of faith we separate our-

selves from our selfish concerns and lean wholly on

Him. In the very essence of prayer it is natural for

God, under such circumstances, to bless us. So, even

before we utter our request, our hearts should be

overflowing with thanksgiving. When we think of the

goodness of Jesus and all He has done for us, our soul

cries out hallelujah. I think what I am trying to say is

when we began to think, we aught to began to thank.

While working at KLIFAM radio as a talk showhost, the powers that be

gave our show the unique name“The Sports Brothers.” Theuniqueness of the name came fromthe fact that my partner, Wally

Lynn was white. I have discovered another unique coupleof guys. Michael Vick and Tony Romo whom I feel aretwins. The difference in their race is that the only thingthat I feel separates them from almost being the same guyor at least identical twins.

Skip Bayless, who took a temporary leave to write abook, caused Wally and me the opportunity to get thatshow. Skip was to never get that gig back, moved on in hisnew capacity as host of ESPn’s “First and Ten.”

Skip analyzed Tony Romo perfectly, and his descriptionof Tony fits Michael Vick as well, in fact even better thanTony. Skip said “Tony doesn’t choke, he doesn’t makebad decisions, and he’s arrogantly cocky. Tony is verysmart and he know that these are bad situation he’s in. his

arrogance allows him to throw into triple coverage.” His hero is Brett Favre, enough said. These guys think

they can make the ESPn high light films by doing it theirway with their strong arm. Brett Favre lost a chance to goto a Super Bowl and his last play with the Vikings throw-ing an interception when he could have taken a knee. Brettplayed over 20 yrs and only one Super Bowl . They callhim gunslinger, I call it arrogance.

After watching Philadelphia and Vick yesterday I sawTony Romo, and Favre. At the end of the first half theEagles was down 21 -7, 13 seconds left the ball onBuffalos 20 yd line. Vick used 5 seconds to throw a pass, leaving 8 sec. The intelligent thing to do was to kick andat least get 3 points. Philadelphia lines up to run anotherplay, knowing this, the announcer said they could pull thisoff, but Vick must plant and throw, no time to shuffle his

feet and look around. 8 seconds no timeouts what didTony’s twin brother do? Shuffle around till the clockexpired before he throws an incomplete pass. I’m notblaming Vick for the lost because they do have a headcoach named Andy Reed and I equate him to WadePhillips (Capt Kangaroo).

I also believe that if Tony Romo had thrown 4 intercep-tions yesterday as Vick did in their lost to Buffalo, everynews cast in this country would have that as a lead story.Since the Eagles was the lead story, should or willPhiladelphia fire their defensive coordinator JuanCastillo?

I don’t think the similarities stop with Vick and Tony;sometimes I think Philadelphia and Dallas are the sameteam. I don’t believe anyone can blow a lead as well asDallas and Philadelphia. That could explain why there isso much hate between these two teams, there’s still a tonof people that think of Michael Vick as a Hall of Fametype quarterback, if he is. Tony will go in the Hall on thesame ballot because Tony and Michael are twins; one isjust faster than the other.

Shuttlesworth flung himself at injustice well knowing hecould be killed at any moment. “He was the first blackman I knew who was totally unafraid of white folks,” saidClemon, who retired from the bench and is now a private-ly practicing attorney. And in november 2008, Shuttlesworth watched from a

hospital bed as Sen. Barack Obama was elected thenation’s first African-American president. The yearbefore, Obama had pushed Shuttlesworth’s wheelchairacross the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma during a com-memoration of the Selma-to-Montgomery voting rightsmarch — a moment Obama recalled Wednesday. In Washington, Obama released a statement lauding

Shuttlesworth as a “testament to the strength of the humanspirit” and said America owes him a “debt of gratitude”for his fight for equality.

In the early 1960s, Shuttlesworth had invited King backto Birmingham. Televised scenes of police dogs and firehoses being turned on black marchers, including children,in the spring of 1963 helped the rest of the nation graspthe depth of racial animosity in the Deep South.

“He marched into the jaws of death every day inBirmingham before we got there,” said Andrew young, the former Atlanta mayor and u.n. ambassador whoserved as an aide to King. young said it wasShuttlesworth’s fearlessness that persuaded King to take

the struggle to Birmingham. “We shouldn’t have beenstrong enough to take on Birmingham ... But God had aplan that was far better than our plan,” young said. “Freddidn’t invite us to come to Birmingham. He told us wehad to come.”

According to a May 1963 new york Times profile ofShuttlesworth, Connor responded to the wordShuttlesworth had been injured by the spray of fire hosesby saying: “I’m sorry I missed it. ... I wish they’d carriedhim away in a hearse.”

While King won international fame, Shuttlesworth wasrelatively little known outside Alabama. But he was a keyfigure in Spike Lee’s 1997 documentary, “4 Little Girls,”about the September 1963 Birmingham church bombingthat killed four black children. Shuttlesworth was born March 18, 1922, near

Montgomery and grew up in Birmingham. As a child, heknew he would either be a minister or a doctor and by1943, he decided to enter the ministry. It was 1954 whenKing, then a pastor in Montgomery, came to Birminghamto give a speech and asked to stop by Bethel Baptist andmeet Shuttlesworth. Then in late 1955 in Montgomery,Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a city bus, prompting the boycott led by King that gave new impetusto the civil rights movement. In January 1956, King’s Montgomery home was bombed

while he attended a rally. Eleven months later, onChristmas night 1956, 16 sticks of dynamite were deto-nated outside Shuttlesworth’s bedroom as he slept at theBethel Baptist parsonage. no one was injured in eitherbombing, although shards of glass and wood pierced

Shuttleworth’s coat and hat left hanging on a hook. Thenext day, Shuttlesworth led 250 people in a protest of seg-regation on buses in Birmingham. In 1957, he was beatenby a mob when he tried to enroll two of his children in anall-white school in Birmingham. In Cincinnati,Shuttlesworth left Revelation Baptist Church and becamepastor of the Greater new Light Baptist Church in 1966. (Copyright ©2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights

How Much Is Enough Time?

Lit Know Black History

By: Jordan BlairELITE nEWS PuBLISHER

In Loving memory of Coach LarryEugene Phillips, May 1, 1959-October 2, 2011. Larry Eugene

Phillips lived a truly blessed life. Hisdeeds in between the dashes (1959 –2011) were on display at his home goingservice. The Church was full of family, friends, clergy, church members, students, and well-wishers for his wife, Rev.Quintalyn Phillips, lovingly known asRev. Quinny.

How much is enough time? This is thequestion Bishop Bryant asked when hespoke at the home going service of Bro.Larry Phillips, on Tuesday, October 12,2011.

“I live in Downtown Chicago and I sawa crowd outside the Apple Store. That wasa monument to Steve Jobs, and it was saidthat he is gone too soon.”

“MLK died at the age of 39. Did hehave enough time? Larry Phillips at age52 - did he have enough time? How muchtime is enough time?”

“What’s wrong with God? God took hisown son out at 32 years of age. I want totell you that Larry had enough time.Would you rather live a short time withtremendous impact or a long time with noimpact? Larry got it right,” said BishopBryant. Very powerful words spoken byBishop Bryant.

Coach Larry Phillips got it right. LarryPhillips was not a simple collector of apaycheck. He became a teacher and acoach. He was named the 2011 Teacher ofthe year at James Madison High School. He also led the Madison freshman footballteam to the 2007 District 11 31AChampionship. Coach Phillips con-tributed in ways that mattered. Thechurch was packed on Tuesday, just a por-tion of the testament of how Larry Phillipslived his life. People were there from allwalks of life, the example of a RainbowCoalition.

Bishop Bryant said that God has givenus His most precious commodity, Time.Stop taking up space and make a differ-

ence in your life and someone else’s life. He saidto weep for those who are yet alive because life isa body of time given to us. “I want someone tochoose God,” said Bishop Bryant.

Many of Coach Larry Phillips’ kids were inattendance and Bishop Bryant ministered to themas well, and many of them dedicated their life toChrist that day.

Larry Eugene Phillips - born in Killeen, Texas tothe proud parents of Charles and nancy Phillips.Larry was the fourth of seven children. Larry wasa real success story. He had a loving devotion toeverything that he did. His devotion was to God,family, friends and his job.

Larry attended and received his education in theKilleen School District. He received his Bachelorof Science Degree in Physical Education andSocial Studies from Paul Quinn College in Waco,Texas. He worked on his Masters degree atLehman College in Bronx, ny. He was a studentteacher for the yonkers Public School System inyonkers, ny. While in new york, Larry was acottage counselor at Children’s Village, DobbsFerry, ny and at Spofford Juvenile DetentionCenter in Bronx, ny. He was a teacher and phys-ical education instructor.

In Dallas, Texas, Larry taught history andcoached several different sports throughout hiscareer at Madison High School, Pinkston High

School, and Thomas Edison Middle School. He coached with the devotion of a father, stern

discipline and loving. The children knew thatwhen Coach Phillips disciplined them he wasteaching, considering their growth and enhancingtheir maturity, while caring. He expected the bestfrom them and would not let them settle for less.

Because of his devotion to Omega Psi PhiFraternity, his fraternity brothers were more likereal brothers. They valued Larry’s friendship andcaring spirit.

Of course, his wife and his family knew betterthan anyone the gift of having Larry as a part oftheir life. Larry departed this life on October 2,2011, in Dallas, Texas. He was predeceased byhis father, Charles L. Phillips and two sisters,Letha Phillips and Cynthia Phillips.
