The last two years have seen major steps forward in development for KTM’s high-ly-popularEndurorange.Anewgenerationarrivedformodelyear2017thathadbeenre-designedfromthegroundup,followedbytherevolutionaryandworld’sfirstserialpro-ductionfuel-injection2-strokeoffroadcompetitionmachineswiththeKTM 250 EXC TPIandKTM 300 EXC TPImodelslaunchedlastsummer.Ithasbeenafruitfultimeintheorange offroad world.

However,workneverceasesattheKTMR&DdepartmentinMattighofen,AustriaandKTMonceagainhasfurtherrefinedtheseexceptionallydynamic,low-weightandhigh-per-formingmachinesacrosstheentire2-strokeand4-strokerange.Eachmodelyear2019machinereceivessuspensionrevisionsfromWP,afactory-lookingREADY TO RACEorangeframealongwithdetailedrefinementsthatcomplementthehigh-qualityBrembobrakes,No-Dirtfootpegs,NEKENhandlebar,CNCmilledhubswithhigh-endblackGiantrimsandmorethatcomesasstandardonthesechampionshipwinningoffroadbikes.Inaddition,theclosed-coursecarburetedKTM 125 XC-WandKTM 150 XC-Wmachinesenjoyamorein-depthengineupdatealongwithanewlydesignedDSclutch.

Anotherrecordyearin2017with238,408unitssoldacrossbothbrandsofKTM AGequalinga17%salesincrease,andnowwithover3,200employeesworldwide,theKTM AGexpansiongloballyisveryvisiblewhilsttheracingaccoladescontinuetogrow.WithachangingformulaforthesportofEnduro,andKTM’sever-expandingheadquartersin Austria having continued focus on developing machines with outstanding perfor-manceandrideability,theKTMEXCmodelyear2019line-upisaworld-beatingformulaready to attack the most challenging of terrain.

However,in2018KTMentersaneweraofendurocompetitionwiththeall-newWorldEnduro Super Series(WESS),achampionshipthatsearchesfortheultimateendurochampion.WithclassicandiconicexistingeventssuchastheTrèfleLozérieninFrance,comprisedwiththehardestofhardendurossuchastheErzbergrodeoRedBullHareScrambleaspartoftheracingcalendar,aswellasbeachracingandtheworld-famousGotlandGrandNationalinSweden,competitorsinthisseven-roundseriesneedtobethetotalall-roundertoreignsupreme.TheRedBullKTMFactoryRacingTeamline-upofJonnyWalker,TaddyBlazusiak,whohasdecidedtoendhisshortretirementinlieuofthenewchallenge,JosepGarciaandNathanWatsonandtheirmachineswillbeputtothetestandfinallytheconclusioncanbemadeonwhoistheworld’smostcompleteendurorider.2018SuperEnduroWorldChampionCodyWebb,whohasenjoyedmanyfruitfulvisitstoEuropeinrecentyears,willalsojointhecompetitionaboardhisFMFKTM Factory Racingmachine.VideoproductionthankstoWESS’partnerRedBullMediaHouseissuretodeliverthehighestqualityofcoveragegloballyforcompetitorsandfansalike,andwithahugemassaudienceatsomeofthemostrecognizableeventsinenduroracing,whereanyamateurcanraceagainsttheprosinwhatisessentiallygoingbacktotheveryrootsofthesport,itwillbeaninterestingseasonnodoubt.

AllKTMEnduromodelshavealightweightchrome-mo-lybdenumsteelframefeaturingaprovenandKTMspecificdesign.Usingauniqueweldingtechnique,frameelementsofvariouscrosssectionsarecombinedinto a single unit. What results in high rigidity and a definedflexibilityatthesametime.Thebenefitfortherideristhatthebikeisextremelyeasytohandleand,combinedwiththefinelybalancedsuspension,thistypeofframedesigncanalsoabsorbheftywheelim-pactenergy.Addtothatitshighlevelofridercomfort,andthisbikeisajoytoride.Anotherhighlightofthisinnovativeframeisthatitalsoservesasaspace-sav-ingchannelforroutingavarietyofliquids.Coolant,forexample,flowsfromthecylinderheadthroughtheframetriangletotheradiators.IntheTPImodels,oilfortheseparateoillubricationisroutedfromafillercapassembly,locatedbetweenthefueltankandthesteeringhead,viaanoillineinsidetheupperframetubetotheoiltank.

FRAME

Thebrilliantlydesignedaluminumswingarmiscastedin a single piece. This ensures that any inconsisten-ciesandweakpointsthatwouldotherwisebefoundin a welded swingarm are eliminated. The innovative PDS(progressivedampingsystem)shockabsorberisconnected to the upper side of the swingarm without anylinkage,whichhasbecomesynonymouswithKTMasaresultofitsoutstandingsuspensionbehavior.Theconnectionusesonlytwobearingsguaranteeingminimum weight and maintenance as well as easy accesstotheshockabsorber.

SWINGARM

ThenoiselimitsspecifiedbytheFédérationInternationaledeMotocy-clisme(FIM)areatremendouschallengeforallmotorcyclemanufacturers.KTM is aware of this and has always put enormous effort into the devel-opmentofstate-of-the-artexhaustsystems.Asaresult,allEXCmodelstodaybenefitfromlightweight,low-noiseexhaustsystemsthatmeetallthelegalrequirementsandalsohaveapositiveimpactonperformance.

EXHAUST SYSTEM

The proven integrated KTM cooling system routes the coolantfromthecylinderheadthroughawell-pro-tected routing system in the frame triangle directly to the efficient and rugged aluminum radiators. When designingthesystem,theflowcharacteristicsofthecoolant were precisely calculated and the airflow optimizedusingCFD(computationalfluiddynamics)modelling.Inaddition,wellthought-outradiatorpro-tections guarantee excellent protection against mud whileatthesametimeserveasefficientcrashbars.TheKTM 450 EXC-FandKTM 500 EXC-Fmodelsalsobenefitfromaradiatorfanfittedasstandard.

All EXC fuel tanks are made of lightweight polyeth-yleneandhaveatransparentsurface.Thebenefitisthat all it takes for the rider to estimate the current leveloffuelinthetankisaquickglance.Thefueltankcapalsofeaturesanorangequickreleasebuttontospeeduprefueling.Afterjustaquarterturn,thebayonetmechanismspringsopenandthefuelpumpnozzlecanbeinsertedimmediately.Allfuelinjectedmodelsarealsoequippedwithanintegratedfuelpumpsystemandanadditionalfuelgauge,whichalerts the rider when the fuel level is low via a lamp fitted into the speedometer.

Theairfilterboxisdesignedtoprotecttheairfilterfromdirtandgrimeand also provides maximum airflow with a minimum of intake noise. Insidethebox,alargeTwinAirfilterelementismountedonarigidcage,whichalsoservesasabrackettoholdtheairfilterboxinplace.Thebenefit–theuncomplicatedcompactdesignmeanstheairfiltercanbereplacedquicklyandpositionedcorrectly–withouttheneedfortools.

WiththeexceptionoftheKTM 125 XC-W,allEXC offroad competition models as well as the KTM 150 XC-WareequippedwithanextremelyrobustE-starter.Asofmodelyear2019,amorepowerfullithiumionbatterywithanelectricalcapacityof2Ahistobeintroduced.Withthenewpowerpackage,thebikeswillstartevenmorereliablythanever.

All offroad competition models feature the proven WP Xplor 48 upside-downfork,whichKTMdevelopedjointlywiththespecialistsofWP Suspension. The innovative split fork incorporates a suspension springineachforkleg,eachforkleghasaseparatedampingfunction–compressiondampingisfittedontheleft-handside,whilereboundisontheright-handside.Individualcompressionandreboundadjustmentscanbemadebytwistingadialonthetopoftherelevantouterforklegwith30clicksavailableoneachside.Theforkoffersoutstanding response and damping characteristics.

Asofmodelyear2019,thedampingunitwillbegivenaslightlystiffersetting.Thishelpsreducingbottomingoutevenmorereliablyduringhardcompressionandthewheelkeepsbettercontactwiththegroundonrebound.TheSIXDAYSmodelsbenefitadditionallyfromapreloadadjusterfittedasstandard,whichcanbeadjustedinthreestages.Thiscomfortfeaturecanberetrofittedasanoptiononstandardmodels. The rider can even make the adjustments with ease in open country,sincenotoolsarerequired.

KTM fits forged triple clamps with an offset of 22 mmtoitsEXCandXC-Wmodels.Withtheirsolidgrip,theyofferahighdegreeofstiffnessandarethustheperfectprerequisiteforprecisecontrolofthefrontwheel.Thehandlebarhasfourdifferentpositions,enablingittobeadjustedforoptimumrider ergonomics.

TheWPXplorPDSshockabsorberattherearisthe key element of the proven and successful PDS (progressivedampingsystem)rearsuspensiondesign.AllEXCandXC-WmodelsincorporatethisKTMtechnology,inwhichtheshockabsorberis connected directly to the swingarm with no additional linkage and thus ensures optimum pro-gressive damping for Enduro riding conditions. An addedbenefitisitshighresistancetobottomingout,whichmaketheWPXplorPDSshockabsorberthe first choice for serious Enduro riders.

Formodelyear2019,WPhasreworkedthemainpistononallmodels,thusimprovingthedampingcharacteristics and matching the rear suspension optimally to the stiffer front end setup.

ThetaperedNEKENhigh-strengthaluminumhandlebarcanbesettofourdifferentpositions.Thisenableseachridertoadjustthepositiontohispersonalpreferenceforoptimumergonomics.Equallyflexiblearethelock-ongripsfromODI,whichcanbechangedorreplacedeas-ily without the need for glue or wire ties due to the cleverly designed clampingdevice.Usingtheoptionallyavailablemapselectswitchonthehandlebar,theridercanchangetheenginepowercurveonthegoandonthe4-strokesitisevenpossibletoengagetherevolutionarytractioncontrolforEndurosimplybypressingabutton.

Thedesignofthebodyworkisthedirectresultofthelong-standingpartnershipbetweenbodyworkdesignerKISKAandoffroadspecialistKTM,togetherwithmembersofthebrand’sFactoryRacingTeam,whosecompetitionexperiencehasbeenfedbackdirectlyintothepopularKTMEXCEnduroseries.Thekeyobjectivesforthedesignofthehigh-gradepolymercomponentsofthebodyworkweretoprovidetheriderwithperfectergonomics,idealcontactpoints,maximumfreedomofmovementandsuperblevelsofcomfort.TheKTMmodelsalsohaveaslightlylowerseatheightforfirst-classhandling.AnotherexampleofintelligentdesignsolutionsisevidentintheI-beamstructureofthelightweightmudguards.Theshapeoftheircontoursgivesthemexcellentstabilityandreducestheaccumulation of dirt and grime. High-performanceBrembobrakeshavebeenfitted

asstandardtoKTM’sEndurobikesforyears.Withlightweight260mmWavebrakediscsupfrontand220mmdiscsontherearwheel,thisistheclass-leadingsystemwhenitcomestothatcrucialcombinationofstoppingpowerandatransparentbrakefeel.

KTMfootpegswithNo-Dirttechnologyaredesignedtoensurethatthefootpegpivotsdonotbecomecloggedwithdirt.Intheeventthatthefootpegsdiginwhenridingthroughdeepruts,forexample,theywill return immediately to the correct position. Compared with the SX footpegsfittedtoMotocrossbikes,theEXCfootpegsarepositioned6mm higher and thus offer greater ground clearance. If a rider prefers alowerpositionthefootpegscanbeswapedeasily.

Inadditiontohavingfrontandrearlights,allKTMmodelscontinuetobefittedwithamultifunctionalinstrumentasstandard.EventheXC-Wversionshaveaspeedometer,althoughitisnotabsolutelyessential.

KTMseatsintheEnduroscenehavealwaysbeenknownfortheirexcellentergonomics.Forthe2019models,theseathasbeenredesignedspecif-ically for this extremely tough discipline. It gets a new seat cover with foamstrips,whichmakesridingtheEXCmodelsevenmorecomfortable,while the seat offers more grip.

Abrand-newgraphicskitmakestheKTMline-upforthenewmodelyearreallystandout.Theframe,resplendentinthebrand’sdistinctivebrightorange,accentuatestheaggressivedesignandperfectlymatchestheKTMsloganREADYTORACE.

TheXC-Wengineisthemostpowerfulandmostcom-petitive engine in its class. It appeals to Enduro riders becauseithaspreciselythekindofpowercharacter-istics they need for optimum performance. During the developmentofthe2-strokeengineswitha125ccand144ccdisplacementrespectively,KTMengineersputtheir many years of experience and expertise to good useandincorporatednothingbutthemostadvancedtechnologyavailabletothem.Onthebasisofthisphi-losophy,theXC-Wenginehasnowbeenupgradedformodelyear2019.Theresultisthattheengine,whichisbothlightandcompact,nowdevelopsmorepowerwithasignificantincreaseintorqueandanevensmoother power delivery over a wide rpm range.

TheenginespoweringtheKTM 125 XC-WandKTM 150 XC-Wbenefitfromnewcylinderswitha54mmand58mmborerespectively.Comparedwiththeirpredecessormodels,theynowfeatureanexhaustportthathasbeenCNCmilledforoptimuminteractionwiththepowervalve,whichismadefromanewrawpartandalsomilled.Asaresult,bothenginesstilldeliverthebestperformanceintheirrespectiveclasses.

Thelightweight,die-castcrankcasehasbeendesigned so that the crankshaft is very high and po-sitionedclosetothebike‘soptimumcenterofgravity.ThisenablestheKTM 125 XC-WandKTM 150 XC-Wmodels to weave through turns fast and feature amaz-ingrideability.Withacompactdesign,thisisalsoalightweightengine.In2019,thisefficientpackagewillbeevennarrower–thenewclutchalsoincludesanewclutchcoverthatreducestheenginewidthby10mm.KTMhasalsooptimizedthekick-startersystem,whichmeansasignificantboostintermsofreliability.

ThenewlydevelopedDS(diaphragmsteel)clutchfeaturesaone-pieceouterclutchhubcombinedwithaprimarygearmadeofhighstrengthbilletsteel.Thisguaranteesunbeatablereliabilityand,duetoitscompactconstruction,reducestheenginewidthby10mm.Incorporatingsteelcarrierfrictiondiscs,theextremelyheat-resistantclutchplatesensurereliabledisengagementoftheclutch.Anadditionalbenefitisthattheyarepre-tensionedbymeansofaspe-ciallydesigneddiaphragmspring,whichreducestheforcerequiredtopulltheclutchlever.ThisisfurtherenhancedbytheuseofBrembohydraulics.

Theoilpumpismountedinasafeandspace-sav-ing location underneath the oil tank. Thefillercapassemblyfortheoiltankislocatedbetweenthefueltankandthesteeringhead.Oilflows from here through a hose inside the upper frametubeintotheoilreservoir.Anautomatic,electronically controlled oil pump is also incorporat-ed,whichreducessmokeemissionsbyover50 percentcomparedwiththeaveragepre-mix.
