Cobra4 New ways of capturing measurement data

Natural sciences in context

Another example: If you combine the system with

a small laptop (netbook), you can perform field

experiments concerning, for example, forces and

accelerations, or examine the pulse and physiol-

ogy during physical education classes. One of

the students rides a bike, skates in a halfpipe, or

runs, and the other students observe the varia-

tion of the measurand in real-time on the moni-

tor of the netbook. The interrelations become

clearer thanks to the connection between the

measurands and the observed state. As a result,

the natural sciences can be experienced live and

better comprehended.

Another advantage is that groups of students can

independently acquire knowledge of the interre-

lations and then present their findings live with

a beamer, which is a method that fosters several

core competences at a time.

Mobile experiments

Cobra4 still has even more to offer, however.

With the Cobra4 mobile hand-held measuring

instrument, you can experience exciting project

days with your students and later evaluate your

experiments with our software measure. The

hand-held measuring instrument is also suitable

for demonstration experiments without a PC. The

measurement data can be transmitted to one or

several digital large-scale displays with the aid

of a radio adapter. This gives you the freedom to

perform demonstration experiments in the mid-

dle of the classroom together with your students.

The sensors, which are suitable for all of the basic

units, cover entire subject areas, such as thermo-

dynamics, weather, or electricity.

Intuitive and easy operation

Just like all the other computer-assisted experi-

ments by PHYWE, Cobra4 is also integrated into

our proven high-performance evaluation soft-

ware measure. For the measurement software for

Cobra4, we paid particular attention to intuitive

operation. The sensors are automatically identi-

fied by the system and then you can immediately

start with the measurements. The functionality of

the software includes all of the relevant elements

for the comfortable and trouble-free execution

of the experiments. You can start measure at any

time simply by pressing a button.

Ready-prepared experiments with reference to our everyday lives

Apart from numerous ready-prepared demon-

stration and student experiments in physics,

chemistry, and biology, the category of everyday-

life phenomena allows you to reach your students

where their knowledge of scientific relations can

be combined with practical applications.

Cobra4 offers you extensive comfort, flexibility,

and completely new experiment opportunities.

Computer-assisted measurements and evalua-

tions are becoming increasingly easy. Science ex-

periments can now once more come to the fore.

Measuring the height of towers

Measurement of everyday-life phenomena: floating and sinking?

Do you wonder how you could possibly raise

your students’ interest in the natural sciences in

this highly technical world? With Cobra4, PHYWE

offers you the solution to this question. Our wire-

less measurement data recording system Cobra4

opens up completely new, unprecedented didac-

tic ways of conveying scientific interrelations in a

convincing and inspiring way.

An Example: Up to now, computer-assisted

demonstration experiments have always been

bound to the location of the teacher’s computer,

which is usually fixed and rather far away from

the students. As a result, it was not always easy

to integrate students into the experiments. Now,

with Cobra4, the location of the computer is not

important any longer. Since the system is com-

pletely wireless, you can perform the experiments

in the middle of the classroom together with your

students. As a result, the students are perfectly

integrated into the teaching and learning proc-

ess, in which they can experience the natural

sciences in close quarters. In addition, completely

new subject areas can be treated. For example,

the students can directly measure certain quanti-

ties in reference systems that are in motion.

Demonstration experiments

Unprecedented opportunities can be realised

with the wireless PC-assisted variant of Cobra4.

Think of fixed teacher PCs. Surely you have been

annoyed sometimes that your PC is located so

far away from your students, thus limiting the

opportunities for computer-assisted experiments.

With Cobra4 Wireless, everything is different:

There are no disturbing cables so that you can

move freely in the classroom and set up the

experiment right among your students. As a

result, the students are integrated better into the

teaching and learning process and can experience

and comprehend the natural sciences as closely

as possible. In addition, completely new subject

areas, such as, for example, moving reference

systems (e.g. weightlessness during a parabolic

flight) can be directly measured.

Fusion of demonstration and student experiments

The student performs an experiment and the

measurement will be transferred to your PC by

radio. At the same time, the measurement curve

will be projected with the aid of a beamer. On

the PC, you can then work on the results together

with your class and with the evaluation program

measure. Alternatively, the students can evaluate

the experiment at home with the free measure

software. Measurements, where it is not a meas-

urement curve that matters but a manageable

number of individual values, do not require a PC

at all. The students can perform the measurement

(e.g. samples that they brought to the class) one

after the other with the Mobile-Link and transmit

their results to the large-scale digital display with

the aid of the Display-Connect unit. The results are

then visible for everyone.

Student experiments

Many schools already use the TESS student

experiment system. A large number of student

experiments for Cobra4 that use TESS are already

of experiments. In addition, the Cobra4 Mobile-

groups of students.

The relation between the electrical voltage and the resulting current is measured with various test resistors. The quotient of the voltage and current is a constant value that characterises the component. The various measurement curves can be displayed in a particularly clear manner in a graph.

Ohm’s law P1330360

An alternating voltage is induced in a coil in the (alternating) field of a magnet that moves pe-riodically. The characteristic of a diode, i.e. the fact that it lets the electrical current pass only in one direction is used to rectify the induced alternating voltage. A capacitor that is connected in parallel to the consumer (resistor) smoothes the rectified alternating voltage.

The electrical conductivity depends not only on the type and concentration of the electrolytes, but also on other parameters. If the temperature increases, one can usually also observe an increase in conductivity. At some point, however, a certain limit is reached, as of which the conductivity de-creases even if the temperature increases further. For aqueous solutions, this value is approximately 90°C. The temperature-dependence of the conductivity can be studied with this experiment.

pH titrations are among the most frequent tests of acids and alkaline solutions. If a pH electrode is used to determine the end point, it also is possible to test highly coloured solutions and to observe the changes of the pH value during the entire reaction. The Cobra4 interface records and evaluates the measurement data in a particularly comfortable way. If a burette is used as the volumeter, the titration solution can be added particularly easily.

Evidence of why animals in colder regions are larger than their close relatives in warmer regions. One reason is that larger animals have lower heat loss than smaller animals since the surface area of their body in relation to their volume is smaller than that of small animals.

Bergmann’s rule: loss of heat as a function of the surface area and volume of the body P1351060

The difference in the temperature rise of earth and water under heat radiation is studied. With the aid of this measurement, the term “heat capacity” can be introduced quickly and easily. The students will learn about the characteristics that are responsible for temperature changes. A practical example that can be stated is hot sand on a beach.

The buoyancy force is equal to the magnitude of the weight of the displaced fluid. This experi-ment uses objects from our everyday lives (Coke bottle, modelling clay, and an egg) to determine as to how the buoyancy depends on the mass and volume of the object and on the density of the fluid in accordance with Archimedes’ principle.
