Development of ISO 14001
Developed by ISO Tech Committee 207 over 5 years.
Considered BS 7750 Model.
Published in September 1996; updated 2004.
EMAS 1 Developed also considering BS 7750
EMAS 2 Developed considering ISO 14001

ISO 14001 – The New Version
ISO 14001 : 1996 has been under revision by ISO TC 207 since 2000
Objectives of the revision were Clarification Compatibility with 9001 : 2000 No new requirement ISO 14001 : 2004 is similar to ISO 14001 : 1996 But there are new requirements Some changes may have significant impacts to some
organization
Benefits of EMS
Assurance to Customers. Good Public or Community Relation. Access to Capital. Enhancing Image and Market Share. Vendor Certification Criteria. Improving Cost Control. Reducing Liability. Conserving Material and Energy. Obtaining Permits or Authorizations. Improving Government – Industry Relation.
Other Management Systems
Two other standards in particular have had significant influence on the development of ISO 14000 series.
BS 7750 – The British Standard Institute’s specification for Environment Management System
EMAS – The European communities Eco Management and Audit Scheme .
BS 7750
BS 7750 published in March 1992. BS 7750 shares common management system principals
with BS 5750 (quality management). Designed to be compatible with EMAS. Was a major influence on the development of ISO 14001. According to the terms of the Vienna Agreement (between
the European Union and the ISO) competing National Standard must be withdrawn.
BS 7750 has now been withdrawn
EMAS EMAS adopted June 29 1993, effective April 1995. Major difference with ISO 14001 is the requirement for an
Environmental Statements. ISO 14001has now been accepted by European union for
the purpose of EMS For sites located in Europe there are requirements in
addition to those of ISO 14001 These do not apply to sites outsides of Europe
Why ISO 14000
Credibility- Developed by consensus Recognition- ISO standards used and recognized around the
world Voluntary- Implement only I there is enough benefit to
make it attractive System based- Organization set their own performance
requirements Flexibility- Designed to facilitate innovation and allows
companies to use or adopt what they already have in place Wide Applicability- Intended to organizations of all types
and sizes regardless of where they are located
