A MESSAGE FROM PHILOMENA MANTELLA, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT
Happy Spring!While the weather might not lead us to believe that spring is here, the fl urry of activity in our division certainly signifi es that this busy time of year has arrived. We’re thrilled to share that our admitted class for Fall 2014 is the most academically talented the University has ever seen. There were 16 applicants for every seat in our freshman class—over 49,000 total. The demand for a Northeastern education continues to rise thanks in no small part to the wonderful services and experiences you support and provide to our students.
Other signs of ‘new growth’ are also visible on our grounds; many of you joined us several weeks ago for the groundbreaking of the new, state-of-the-art Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex on Columbus Avenue. Similarly, the Grand Marc project—now offi cially dubbed East Village—will reach completion in the next few months and welcome its fi rst residents.
As is life, we have also faced our share of challenges as an institution and division this semester, particularly around civility and open discourse. I hope you all had the opportunity to read the President’s piece from April 2nd on “Our Journey to Deeper Understanding”—it is important that, despite challenging situations and diff erences in perspective, we not lose sight of the fact that we all share a common bond as both professional educators and life-long learners. I’m grateful to be able to work in a community of thoughtful, caring people who strive for understanding and apprecia-tion of diversity.

EXPANDED ALIGN PROGRAM BRIDGES GAP BETWEEN EDUCATION AND INDUSTRY
This past February, our new ALIGN Program went live with eight industry-focused master’s degrees.
ALIGN, which stands for Accelerated Link to Industry through Northeastern’s Global Network, initially launched in 2013 as the Computer Science ALIGN Program. The program allowed students from diverse academic and professional back-grounds to earn a master’s degree and transition into the burgeoning technology fi eld.
ALIGN’s distinctive approach, featuring a customized aca-demic curriculum, clearly fi lled a need. The program’s success on our Seattle regional campus prompted the expansion to all three campuses and eight diff erent high-demand industries. ALIGN master’s degrees are now off ered in bioin-formatics, energy systems, engineering management, health informatics, information assurance, project management, regulatory aff airs, and the original computer science.
The ALIGN Program is unique in many ways. Courses are tailored to each individual student’s background and career goals. Classes are off ered in a hybrid format here in Boston and on our regional campuses in Charlotte and Seattle. Northeastern’s signature co-op program is built into each master’s degree curriculum, and ALIGN students receive the full benefi t of Northeastern’s talented faculty and other resources. Perhaps most importantly, the program prepares students to transition into new positions and fi elds within the same timeframe as a traditional master’s degree.

THE POWER OF “WE”: EMSA FUELS EMPOWER CAM-PAIGN EFFORTS
This fall, the University launched an unprecedented cam-paign to support future innovation and transformation.
The Empower Campaign is about people empowering people. With three strategic priorities--recruiting faculty, sup-porting and enhancing student support & fi nancial aid, and igniting innovation in research fi elds and industries – Em-power is transforming higher education for today’s students and professionals.
Continuing Northeastern’s forward momentum takes en-gagement and support from our entire community; that is why EMSA has launched a division-wide eff ort to support The Empower Campaign. In the weeks ahead, EMSA units will host a series of fun events and programs to educate staff on the Campaign’s eff orts and encourage all to participate in a variety of ways--our ultimate goal is to engage everyone in supporting the strategic priorities.
Every gift made to the University is an opportunity to en-hance our institution’s future; it’s about giving to what you love, in whatever way you can. It is important to know that every gift counts, no matter the size. Funds can be directed at specifi c areas, offi ces, and organizations. And, as we in EMSA rise to the challenge of raising $10,000, SVP Mantella has an-nounced she will match with a gift of $10,000.

Northeastern partnered with the Virgin HealthMiles program in 2013 to bring the university an exciting program that motivates and rewards participants when they adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle. ENHANCING CURRICULAR FLEXIBILITY
Northeastern provides exceptionally rich academic and expe-riential learning opportunities for our students. We encourage our students to explore multiple academic interests—often in the form of double majors or minors—and to engage in expe-riential learning in a variety of settings, such as co-ops, study abroad, service learning, research, and Dialogues of Civiliza-tion. The intentional integration of academic theory with real-world practice is what makes Northeastern special, and very attractive to increasing numbers of applicants each year.
Based on student surveys and focus groups, we know that students are looking for optimal fl exibility and choice in their academic programs. One important choice is the length of time it will take them to graduate.
Ideally, time to degree should be driven by students’ curricular choices rather than a pre-determined program track. We want all our students to be able to maximize the range of oppor-tunities Northeastern has to off er, regardless of their time to degree. To that end, next year we will be introducing some curricular enhancements, including a new opportunity for rising sophomores called NUterm. In May-June (Summer 1), while most of their peers at other intuitions are still fi nishing their regular spring term, our students will have the oppor-tunity to enroll in 8-credits of course work. The Colleges are currently working on exciting and innovative off erings that will expose these students to unique projects and research early in their careers. Participation in NUterm will not change the total cost of a Northeastern degree--nor will it deprive fi rst-year students of their coveted summer break! Coupled with special co-curricular off erings, NUterm will strengthen our students’ bonds of friendship and affi nity for the University.

VP JANE BROWN TRANSITIONS TO A NEW ROLE
A national search has been launched for a new Vice President of
Enrollment Management, as Jane Brown is stepping down from this
role at the start of the new academic year. Jane has led the enroll-
ment eff orts on behalf of the University for the past four years. In
her time with Northeastern, applications have increased by 32%
and our student profi le has shifted signifi cantly – this entering class
will prove to be the University’s most academically talented and
prepared yet. As vice president, Jane has played a leadership role
in several key University initiatives including an increased focus on
retention and graduation through a cross-functional University-wide
committee that is credited with the current retention rate of 96%, as
well as a successful launch of the University Scholars Program, which
is attracting the best and brightest talent to Northeastern.
As Jane steps down she will transition into a new, part-time role as
Senior Advisor to the SVP of Enrollment Management and Student
Life. In this new capacity, Jane will bring her considerable talents
and experience to a few key initiatives, including enhancing and
operationalizing curricular fl exibility. Jane has been a key leader in
the eff orts to amplify our student-centered educational approach
by enhancing curricular fl exibility in order to allow time-to degree
to be driven by student choice. As part of this initiative, Jane has
partnered with our academic leadership to develop and introduce
NUterm. As Senior Advisor, Jane will continue her strong leadership
in this area to enable and operationalize these curricular eff orts for
our new incoming class.
We are delighted to have Jane engaged in this new role and look
forward to her close collaboration with University leadership in the
months ahead.
