Message from Philomena Mantella, Senior Vice President

It’s hard to believe fall is already upon us. I want to thank everyone who helped out over the past weekend in

welcoming our students and their families to Northeastern. It was again a wonderful beginning to the year

and a great reminder of the important role that each of us plays in making Northeastern such a special place.

This year was an exciting one. It was another record year in the quality of our undergraduate applicants. We

also won our second consecutive Beanpot in women’s ice hockey, crew participated in the Henley, and we

celebrated our first year in Seattle, among many other memorable milestones. I am confident the coming

year will bring many more exciting moments and achievements!

We’ve been busy this summer. The work here at Northeastern—both in Boston and on the graduate

campuses—has been profound. This fall, we will be starting classes with the first phase of our keyless entry

project completed, phase two of the cutting-edge Digital Media Commons opened, expanded dining services

in International Village ready to serve take-out, kosher, halal, and allergy-sensitive meals, the Center for

Student Involvement’s new programming lab completed, and many other small and large projects focused on

enhancing student life across Boston, Seattle, and Charlotte.

Thanks to all of you who help make our endeavors a success. By working collaboratively, we make a

difference not just in our division but on the whole of Northeastern.

Meet the New Center for Student Involvement The newly minted Center for Student Involvement (CSI) was unveiled this summer and unites major

components of Northeastern’s student life. The new center is responsible for providing innovative

leadership opportunities, advising student organizations on their programming and development,

developing our fraternity/sorority life community, and overseeing operational services such as the

Northeastern ticket office and scheduling operations.

The center staff has been working hard this summer to reconceptualize all of the programs and services

they provide. Some developments include:

CSI Programming Lab and Crew

After much planning, the Student Activities Resource Room located in 240 Curry Student Center has

experienced a total overhaul. Once utilized as storage for student organizations, this room will now be a

much more usable and interactive space. The programming lab will host the CSI Crew, which is

comprised of student leaders who will be assisting student organizations in their programming needs.

The lab will also feature meeting space, temporary storage, and many other resources for student

organizations.

LEAD 360 Leadership Programs

With the addition of two new staff members who focus on leadership programming and development,

CSI is examining new leadership models that focus on building specific competencies that are linked to

university and employer best practices. Using transformational leadership theory as a guiding principle,

CSI will be developing innovative ways to deliver leadership education to our students.

Social Media Marketing & Virtual Engagement

Under the guidance of a new staff member in this area, CSI is developing a comprehensive plan to

engage students who are away on experiential endeavors. The center’s new website is currently being

designed and will focus on global experiences that students are having with regard to their student

organization involvement. The new website will also offer opportunities to participate in student

organization meetings and events that are occurring on main campus.

In August, the EMSA Staff Development Committee launched a new buddy program called EMbasSAdors. The program partners new employees in the division with more seasoned staff who will help ease each new employee’s transition into Northeastern and accelerate his/her engagement with the department, division, and university community. EMbasSAdors will serve as an informal resource to new hires over their first six months in Enrollment Management & Student Affairs, providing guidance and encouragement and helping them integrate with the EMSA culture and grow their professional network so that they can more easily navigate their new work environment. It is also a way for staff members who have been here for at least two years to share their knowledge about and excitement for the work they do. EMbasSAdors will be matched with one or more new hires from outside of their department and assist in the overall onboarding experience. Responsibilities include meeting with a new hire during his/her first week and checking in minimally once a month during the first six months. EMbasSAdors are not expected to be mentors, coaches, or trainers—they are simply representatives of the division. For more information on the program and how to apply to be an EMbasSAdor, please follow this link.

Spotlight on Daniel Volchok, Assistant Dean of Graduate Student

Life and Global Connections

In this role, he was responsible for providing and managing all academic and student

services for students in MBA and specialty masters programs, including orientation,

graduation clearance, international student advising, and personal support.

Dan has more than 35 years of student affairs and corporate experience and has served

as Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Development at Endicott College, as

well as management roles at WebCT. He has also done extensive consulting on the use

of student portals on campuses and the use of technology in student affairs and has

written articles and presented numerous sessions on technology and online student

services. Dan received a BBA and MBA from Ohio University and an Ed.D from Teachers

College, Columbia University.

With these impressive credentials and a fresh perspective on how we can further

engage our graduate and global students, Dan will be an integral part of the division,

particularly in introducing and expanding our virtual communities. He will work

closely with numerous university offices to develop a service model that will integrate

the academic engagement and personal development of our ever-increasing

undergraduate participation in out-of-region co-ops, study abroad or faculty-led

programs across the globe, and graduate students studying in multiple locations or

online. These initiatives will leverage existing programs and technology and also launch

efforts that utilize new technologies to create new programs that enable the division to

expand its student service and student development model.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs welcomed Dr.

Daniel Volchok to 104 Ell Hall in early June. He joins the division as

Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Life and Global Connections.

He comes to us from the D’Amore-McKim School of Business where

he served as Director of Graduate Program and Student Services.

Regina Sullivan has been named the executive senior associate director of athletics and

senior woman administrator. Regina, who served in a similar position at the University of

Minnesota, replaces Amanda Braun, who was named athletic director at the University of

Wisconsin-Milwaukee after a seven-year tenure at Northeastern.

As executive senior associate director, Regina will assume the role of top administrator to

the athletic director. She will supervise select sports programs, along with the department's

business, human resources, compliance, enrollment management and student-athlete

support services units.

Regina previously served as senior associate director of athletics at the University of

Minnesota. In that role, her primary duties involved sports administration, including

supervision of the soccer, men's and women's basketball and volleyball teams. She served

as the senior woman administrator and the chief of staff for the athletic director, assisting

with the daily management of the department.

During her time in the Twin Cities, Regina served on the Big Ten Conference Administrators

Council and was co-chair and a member of the Big Ten Joint Group Executive Committee.

She was the department liaison to a number of university departments and committees,

including the Faculty Academic Oversight Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics,

admissions, campus police, and the student conduct and academic integrity office.

Prior to arriving in Minneapolis, Regina served as the associate director of athletics at the

University of California, San Diego. Her considerable professional experience also includes

roles as the assistant executive director of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association,

graduate assistant to the athletic director at the University of Tennessee, and graduate

assistant basketball coach at Syracuse University.

Regina has served on numerous national boards, including the National Association of

Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators Board of Directors, and select NCAA committees.

Regina earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Yale University, where she was a

four-year starter on the women's basketball team. She also holds a master's degree in

physical education/sport management from the University of Tennessee.
