GREATER TORONTO EDITION, MAY 11–18, 2013

The new Ontario government is giving lo-cal festivals and events a boost to help grow tourism, create jobs and support economic growth across the province.

This year, 203 festivals and events received funding through the Celebrate Ontario fund. This support will help organizers enhance programming and services, attract new audi-ences and create jobs in the tourism sector.

“Our government knows the value of in-vesting in local festivals and events,” said Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Mi-chael Chan. “Through Celebrate Ontario, we are helping festivals and events support thousands of jobs and generate millions in

revenue while giving families and visitors new ways to experience our province.”

Ontario’s unique local festivals and events celebrate our diversity, heritage and culture, and make Ontario a more attractive place to visit.

“Festivals and events are important to com-munities across Ontario,” said Executive Di-rector of Festivals and Events Gary Masters. “Celebrate Ontario grants are an incredibly effective way to enhance the quality of those

festivals and events, and that means more visitors — visitors who stay longer and con-tribute to local economies.”

Supporting festivals and events is part of the new Ontario government’s efforts to build a strong economy and vibrant communities.

QUICK FACTS• Festivals and events generate more than

22,000 jobs in Ontario every year.• Festivals and events that received Celebrate

Ontario funding in 2011 reported an increase of 1.1 million visitors and over $165 million in additional visitor spending over 2010.

• Celebrate Ontario 2013 is providing support to over 203 festivals and events. Since 2007, the province has invested $77 million to en-hance almost 1,000 festivals and events.

• Tourism is an important part of Ontario’s economy. In 2011 tourism contributed over $23 billion to the economy and supported over 300,000 direct and indirect jobs. ●

Ontario government is supporting local tourism and job creation

“ Festivals and events generate more than 22,000 jobs in Ontario every year.”

According to a BMO Bank of Montreal survey released recently, half (51 per cent) of Canadian businesses are planning to hire stu-dents or recent graduates this year.

“We’ve seen more companies investing in employee training and development – in conjunction with creating long-term plans – which will help business owners ensure they have a supply of talented employees who are prepared to drive performance,” said Steve Murphy, Senior Vice President, Commercial Banking, BMO Bank of Montreal.

PLANS FOR HIRING STUDENTS AND GRADUATES • One-third (30 per cent) of employers plan

to take on a paid summer student. • One-in-fi ve (21 per cent) plan to hire a re-

cent graduate as a permanent employee. • Regionally, job prospects for students and

graduates are the brightest in Ontario (56 per cent), followed by the Atlantic Prov-inces (53 per cent) and Quebec (52 per cent.) Murphy added that as many students are cur-

rently looking for summer employment, it’s en-couraging to see so many Canadian companies with a noticeable appetite to hire students or re-cent graduates. “These organizations recognize that this group of Canadians bring a wealth of talent and passion into the workforce.”

HIRING DIFFERENCES BY SECTOR • Business/financial (37 per cent), retail

(25 per cent) and construction (22 per cent) companies are the most likely to

hire a recent graduate as a paid intern. • The service and manufacturing sectors are

the most likely (35 per cent) to hire a paid summer student, followed by the agricul-tural sector (34 per cent)

• Employers in the manufacturing industry are the most likely (25 per cent) to hire a recent graduate as a permanent employee, followed by the services (24 per cent) and retail and business/fi nancial (23 per cent) industries.

“Students and recent graduates are brim-ming with ideas and fresh perspectives that add value for our customers and our busi-ness,” said Lynn Roger, Chief Talent Offi cer, BMO Financial Group. “When they start their career at BMO – through a summer job or a more permanent role – they bring ambition and excitement, and we offer opportunities to grow in ways that are important to them, in a culture where they can truly meet their goals.”

The report was conducted via Pollara with a sample of 500 Canadian business owners, conducted between February 25 and March 15, 2013. Data has been weighted by region and company size, based on a December 2011 Statistics Canada Study.

Ontario is leading with brain research

The new Ontario government is investing in world-leading brain research to improve health care and create new jobs for the people of Ontario.

Keeping the province on the cutting edge of research and innovation, Premier Kathleen Wynne announced the Ontario government will provide $100 million over fi ve years to sup-port patient-focused neuroscience research.

“Research and innovation are vital in cre-ating a better province for everyone,” said Wynne. “By investing in leading edge re-search, we’re helping to improve outcomes for patients and export Ontario expertise, and that helps create jobs.”

The Province’s support will help the Ontar-io Brain Institute expand its research into the areas of neurodegeneration, such as Alzheim-er’s disease, and depression and continue its important research on cerebral palsy, autism and epilepsy.

“The Ontario Brain Institute’s collabora-tive, patient-focused approach to addressing brain disease and disorders is what makes it truly unique,” said Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Deb Matthews. “Conditions like Alzheimer’s, stroke, depression and trau-matic brain injury affect hundreds of thou-sands of Ontarians, so the institute’s work touches lives – family, friends, our own – and helps to bring better outcomes for patients.”

It will also allow the institute to leverage

additional investments from various partners including industry, philanthropic, federal and international sources.

“We are just beginning to demonstrate the impact that the Ontario Brain Institute will have on research and innovation across On-tario,” said Chair of the Ontario Brain Insti-tute Joseph Rotman. “Going forward, we will continue to build on past investments and our many research strengths with the hopes of positioning Ontario amongst the world leaders in the global transformation occurring around brain research and neuroscience.”

Investing in innovation and improving health care are part of the new Ontario gov-ernment’s efforts to build a strong economy and a fair society for the benefi t of all.

QUICK FACTS • The Ontario Brain Institute was launched

in November 2010 with the support of a $15-million provincial grant, which helped leverage an additional $26 million in fund-ing from other sources.

• One in three Canadians will be affected by a neurological or psychiatric disease, disor-der or injury at some point in their lives.

• Ontario is home to one of North America’s leading concentrations of biomedical re-search and development, with universities and teaching hospitals investing $1.7 billion a year in health research. ●

Harris Institute achieves unprecedented milestone

Harris Institute and the University of the West of Scotland now offer two college Diplo-mas and a Master’s Degree in 32 months with scholarships and bursaries.

“Our innovative partnership with UWS is a timely acceleration of the postsecondary sys-tem that achieves comprehensive education and signifi cant credentials at less cost in a far shorter period of time,” says John Harris, pres-ident of Harris Institute. “To achieve equiva-lent credentials in the conventional postsec-ondary system takes 8 to 12 years.”

Harris students who complete both the Au-dio Production and Arts Management Diplo-ma programs in 20 months receive $2,500 ‘Mu-sic Business Professional’ bursaries and $3,500 ‘UWS Scholarships’ for 12-month Master’s Degree programs in ‘Songwriting and Perfor-mance’ or ‘Music: Innovation & Entrepreneur-ship’ with $1,500 accommodation bursaries. UWS students receive full scholarships for cer-tifi cate courses at Harris during their summer work placements in Toronto.

“This strengthening of our strategic part-nership further develops our unique brand of practice-based, industry-focused education,” says Anne Gifford, Head of the UWS School

of Creative and Cultural Industries. “Harris ‘double diploma’ graduates can progress to a Master’s qualifi cation that has been designed with industry. The sector leading collaboration delivers value to students and contributes to internationalism and global citizenship.”

Over the past eight years, 52 Harris gradu-ates have earned BA (Hons) Commercial Mu-sic or BSc Music Technology degrees at UWS in 8 months on full scholarships. Eighty-six UWS students have completed ‘fi eld of study’ work placements in Toronto. The partnership includes senior faculty exchanges and stu-dents at both institutions coordinate the ‘Inter-national Artist Exchange.’

The University of the West of Scotland is the largest modern university in Scotland with campuses in Ayr, Dumfries, Hamilton, Paisley and a creative hub in Glasgow. UWS provides relevant, high quality, inclusive higher education and aims to have a trans-formative infl uence on the economic, social and cultural development of the West of Scotland, and beyond.

Harris Institute is an international leader in audio production and music industry educa-tion. Founded in 1989, the college was the fi rst to introduce accelerated 12-month Diploma programs taught by active industry leaders. After completing a survey of graduates from Canada’s leading media arts schools, Jim La-marche ranked Harris Institute ‘The Best in Canada’ with A+. The complete ‘Final Report Card on Media Arts Education in Canada’ is at: jimlamarche.wordpress.com. ●
