Spring 2015
EMPIRE STATE NEWS THE OFFICIAL VOICE OF THE NEW YORK STATE ASSOCIATION OF FCRV
FROM THE PRESIDENT Happy spring I hope everyone is looking for-
ward to get their rigs ready for the upcoming camp-
ing season ,winter has been hard and long.
The state association meeting is coming up
on April 11. We can have access to the building be-
ginning at 11am, meeting is scheduled to begin at
12:00 noon. This meeting is important to finalize
plans for the upcoming spring and fall state camp-
outs for 2015 (Finger Lakes District hosting in Ka-
nona, NY. Memorial day weekend and Hudson Val-
ley District is hosting the fall at Herkimer county
fairgrounds from Oct, 9-12. We need people to come
out and support the efforts of our members so that
we continue to have the camp outs. Without your
support the association and FCRV can’t survive.
Come out and see old friends and make new ones as
well. I wish you and yours a blessed happy Easter
and a safe and happy camping season.
Yours In Camping,
Sean McHale
NYSA President
STATE DIRECTORS’ NOTES Well, welcome spring. We finally made it
and we northerners can maybe get our RV’s out of
storage. The month of March is going so fast that it is
almost Easter, where is the time going.
We want to welcome back all of our snow-
birds, have a safe trip back home. Most of them are
traveling to the Retiree Rally while I am writing this
article. The organization has been pretty quiet as
most are snowbirds also and nothing has been going
on.
You should have received your ballots for the
National election, please vote either online or by snail
mail. Even with no oppositions your votes still count
and this way they know who is really interested and
care who our National Officers are.
We are having a Board meeting on April 11th,
so we hope we can get enough to have a quorum. We
know we are getting smaller in size and it was
brought up to maybe change our districts from 4 to 2
or 3. We had lost Tri-County as they only have 1
family in the district and they are now independents.
We need to make changes, so get your ideas to you
District Directors, so they can bring them to the
board meeting or the Spring State Campout.
Speaking of the Spring State Campout, make
your reservations to go to Kanona (Finger Lakes Dis-
trict) for Memorial Day Weekend. We know the
committee is working hard to put on another great
campout. The registration form will be in another
section of this paper.
Remember the National Campvention is in
July at Gillette, Wyoming. Get your reservations in
soon, as that committee is hard at work getting things
together. I had emailed a complete package of infor-
mation to each District Director for those who would
like to volunteer for committees, parade info, floats,
etc.
In this ESN issue is an application and infor-
mation sheet for the NE Regional Campout in Penn-
sylvania in August.

NYS Directors
Albany, NY Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today
invited New Yorkers to volunteer at their favorite
state park or historic site as part of the second
annual I Love My Park Day on May 4, 2015.
Online registration is now open for volunteers
who want to support clean-up and beautification
efforts at sites across the state, including areas
that sustained much damage from Superstorm
Sandy. For more information of to register, go to
http://www.ptny.org/ilovemypark/.

Central District Spring is here...or at least that is what the
calendar says. We are looking forward to our first
campout of the season! We thank Ralph Hanley for
his continued efforts as our conservation director as
well as district treasurer. This is a great campout
because even if the weather is cool there is a nice
stone hall with a fireplace at each end! We again
extend an open invitation for all to join us at this
campout which is the first weekend in May. The
relatively new Love My Park Day coincides with
our campout. We are thankful for our Canadian
friends that also have made a tradition of joining us.
As always, the more the merrier!
Your donations of pasta/rice for the scholar-
ship basket raffle at Spring State will be most ap-
preciated! In fact all donations to the scholarship
fundraiser are appreciated.

NYS DEC Invasive Species Ban 2015
Today, I once again bring up the subject of invasive species. An invasive species is
any species that is not native to an ecosystem and will likely cause harm to the economy, en-
vironment or human health. The price of this biological pollution in the U.S. alone is about
$120 billion per year.
On March 10, New York State placed a ban on 126 invasive species (69 plants, 15
fish, 30 invertebrates, 5 vertebrates, and 7 species of algae, bacteria, and fungi). Purple
loosestrife, garlic mustard, mute swan, sea lamprey, Africanized honeybee, and the Japanese
pine sawyer are just a few. The complete list can be found at www.dec.ny.gov/docs/lands-
forest-pdf/islist.pdf.
Property owners are not required to remove existing plants. If you do decide to re-
move these plants, please remember that some are extremely harmful and need to be han-
dled very carefully. The giant hogweed is a prime example.
If you think that this is not really a big issue, keep in mind that the monarch butterfly
caterpillar will only feed on milkweed. It mistakes the invasive pale swallow-wort plant for
milkweed and will starve. Another invasive, common reed grass, is choking out native cat-
tails. The mute swan is causing a degradation of water quality among other things. And what
would a conservation article be if you didn’t hear us use the terms emerald ash borer or
Asian longhorn beetle. If you have spent more than 5 minutes with Mike you know what
harm they are doing to our native trees.
This ban will not cure all of our problems, but it is a large step in the right direction.
So please be careful when you start to think about spring planting and landscaping projects.
A little research can go a long way.
Mike and Carol Burns
NYS Conservation Directors
Please remember to do conservation posters.
We would like to see one in each age category
from every district at Spring State.
