 Emotional Museum

Emotional Museum is an innovative product for historical and artistic heritage display.

It is the response to the need for the integration of new technology with historical and

artistic heritage exhibitions.

This product was designed to meet the ever increasing need by the museums to offer

Edutainment high value-added services, designed to educate and entertain, and to

meet the expectations of an increasingly discerning audience.

It is suitable for any type of exhibit characterizes by the exhibition of works of art that

combine multimedia content.

Technology, architecture and operation

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology

allows the visitor - equipped with a compact, hand

held computer (PDA) - to approach an electronic

tag, positioned near the artwork and receive

contextual information that enriches the display of

the artwork.

The information is locally synchronized by an e-

content management system, which will be

implemented in the museum. The visitor’s PDAs are

easy to use with integrated wi-fi for delivery of

content.

An RFID transponder (tag) is placed close to each artwork, artefact or exhibit, where the

descriptive label or placard is placed. When the PDA approaches the tag, it displays all the

information related to the artwork, the historical context, the author, the way it was used and so on.

The system can access multimedia content in multiple languages. Tags for each language

selection can be placed near the museum’s entrance and the visitors can simply select their own

language by approaching the “language tags” with the PDA. The system also has a "map function"which allows the visitor to identify which displays have or have not been viewed.

Information to be delivered to the PDA’s is updated on a database contents using a content

management system (CMS). PDAs may receive their interactive, multi-media content by wireless,

through an automated process which updates the content.

The CMS system, thanks to a user-friendly interface, allows the creation and updating of textual

and multimedia contents.

The information of artwork are contained within a database management system (DBMS), and are

transferred asynchronously on PDAs through access points properly installed and configured in the

area. The entire technological infrastructure can be developed ad hoc, according to the specific

needs of the customer.

Advantages

Strengths compared to systems that do not use RFID technology:

Benefits for the Museum:

1)  Less effort and lower costs for the staff providing visitor orientation and information.

2)  Higher visitor satisfaction, meeting the expectations of an increasingly discerning public

3)  Wider audiences, more inclusive displays, through content tailored to different groups of

visitor’s needs.

4)  Better competitiveness through improved ranking in education, entertainment and visitor

satisfaction fields

Benefits for the Visitor:

1)  Total freedom of choice of exhibits and the possibility to choose different paths between

them.

2)  Easy to use.

3)  With the virtual guide, the visitor can orientate themselves in the exhibition. This significantly

reduces misunderstandings, misinterpretation of information provided by museum staff, or

spatial disorientation.

4)  An involving experience. The visitor is provided with multimedia content, not only with audio

content, as is the case in the majority of the museums today.

Strengths compared to other systems that use RFID technology:

1)  The multimedia contents that are displayed on the PDA are loaded directly into the server and displayed during their use. The system allows that content modified on the server is

immediately visible on the PDA. As a result manual synchronization of individual PDAs is not

required. Updating content is much easier, faster and more streamlined than existing

systems.

2)  There is no need to physically organise PDAs by language because all PDAs are enabled by

the use of content in the different languages provided by the museum. Every PDA has the

ability to display contents in any desired language based on scanning the language tag.

3)  The system structure provides for a limitless population of the content database. This gives

the possibility of delivering different content for different groups of visitors; creating, for

example, standard contents for adults, content for school children, university students or

advanced contents.

4)  The system allows unique identifiers to be written to tags allowing for the system to be

extended or updated as exhibitions change. With unlimited extension, and the ability to

associate new content with existing exhibits, the system can cope with changes to

exhibitions once they are in place.
