Pultrusion is a manufacturing process for producing continuous lengths of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) structural shapes with constant cross-sections. Raw materials are a liquid resin mixture (containing resin, fillers and specialized additives), continuous glass fiber filaments known as rovings, chopped filaments called continuous strand mat and a protective fabric known as surfacing veil. The pultrusion process involves pulling these raw materials (rather than pushing, as is the case in extrusion) through a heated forming & curing die using a continuous pulling system.

Reinforcing fibers consist of continuous strand mat and continuous strand roving. Coupling the reinforcing fibers with the resin and a surfacing veil, the pultrusion product is complete.

PROPERTIES OF FRP COMPOSITES

General properties

In general, FRP composites are a combination of two or more materials yielding properties superior to those of the individual ingredients. A matrix resin alone is not structural and is brittle, while a reinforcement alone is flimsy, but together, they form a strong FRP composite. The region where the reinforcement and matrix meet is called the interface. Composite properties are determined by chemical and mechanical interaction of the combined materials. Plastic resins come in two different classes - thermosets and thermoplastics. From a practical perspective, it’s easy to remember that thermosets maintain their molded shape at higher temperatures and cannot be melted and reshaped. Thermoplastics will melt at a given temperature and can be solidified into new shapes by cooling to ambient temperatures. The plastic resin systems determine chemical, electrical, and thermal properties.

Reinforcing fibers include glass, carbon, aramid and other man-made and natural materials that are used in a variety of forms and combinations to provide the required properties such as strength, dimensional stability, and heat resistance. Additives provide color and determine surface finish, and affect many other properties such as weathering and flame retardance.

Final properties are determined by many factors including the type, amount and properties of the individual ingredients, especially the ratio of fiber reinforcement and matrix resin; the fiber orientation in the matrix; the surface interaction of fibre and resin (the 'interface') and quality control during manufacturing.

PULTRUDED FRP REBARS

FRP Rebars

Steel rebar has historically been used as an effective and cost-efficient concrete reinforcement. However, it is susceptible to oxidation (rust) when exposed to chlorides and certain other aggressive chemicals. Examples of such exposure include coastal areas, and sites where aggressive chemicals and ground conditions exist.

Steel rebar also conducts electricity and magnetic fields, attributes that are not desirable in many types of medical, nuclear, power generating, and electronic applications. FRP rebars have proven to be the solution and will give structures a longer service life.

Advantages Non-Corrosive - will not corrode exposed to a

wide variety of corrosive elements including chloride ions.

High Strength-to-Weight Ratio - provides good reinforcement in weight sensitive applications.

Non-Conductive - provides excellent electrical and thermal insulation.

Excellent Fatigue Resistance - performs very well in cyclic loading situations.

Good Impact Resistance - resists sudden and severe point loading.

Magnetic Transparency - not affected by electromagnetic fields; excellent for use in MRI and other types of electronic testing facilities.

Light Weight - weigh approximately one-quarter the weight of an equivalent size steel bar - easy to be transported, no need of lifting equipment, saving high machine and manual cost.

FRP GRATINGS Moulded Gratings

Moulded Gratings are produced by the hand lay-up process in which continuous fibreglass rovings are systematically laid in an open mould in the direction of vertical and horizontal, layer after layer manually, and thoroughly wetted out with liquid resin. When the weaving process is completed, the mould is heated to cure the grating panel. After curing, the grating panel is ejected from the mould. The standard panel would have concave non-slip walking surface. Other surface such as gritted surface, smooth surface are also produced on request. Gritted surface for applications where maximum wear resistance and slip resistance is required. Grit is embedded in the resin layer - not glued on - for greater durability. Moulded Grating is an excellent alternative to metal grating where there are safety concerns due to the presence of liquids and oils on the floor as well as corrosive environments where chemical resistance of the flooring material is important for long term durability. Moulded Gratings are lightweight and easy to fabricate. Savings on labor and equipment often make the total installed cost of them comparable to that of steel. Combining these installation savings with low maintenance, long life and worker safety, these products offer a life cycle cost that is significantly lower than that of metallic products.

Regularly Moulded Gratings are made from polyester resin matrix. Glass content is approximately 35%. They are also available with vinylester or phenolic resin. All kinds of resin are self-extinguishing and with UV-stabiliser. Standard colours are green, orange, yellow or grey, other colours are available on request. The high percentage of resin (65%) in moulded grating offers superior corrosion resistance and optimal impact resistance. Since Moulded Gratings are “cast” in one-piece, there is no mechanical joint between bearing bars, and along with the continuous fibreglass rovings in alternating layers, in the direction of vertical and horizontal, so the loads are distributed evenly in all directions. These features allow for use without continuous side support.

Page 15: emnbrocure

FRP GRATINGS Pultruded Gratings

Pultruded Gratings are based upon high strength pultruded bars ( I-profiles or T-profiles) in load-bearing direction, which are connected by cross-rods with proper spacing through some assembly techniques.

Pultruded Gratings are lightweight, which saves on freight and makes installation easier. The unique cross-bar construction allows the grating panels to be easily cut and modified to fit almost any plant requirement.

Design Pultruded Gratings are made from isophthalic polyester resin. The reinforcement is achieved by a combination of fibreglass mats and rovings reaching a glass content of approximately 65%. They are also available with vinylester or phenolic resin. All kinds of resin are self-extinguishing and with UV-stabiliser. A wide variety of bearing bar shapes along with various bearing bar and cross-rod pacings are available depending on the design requirements. The traditional "I" bar shape provides maximum flexibility in design. It is available in 25mm, 30mm, and 38mm depths. The "T" bar shape provides a more solid walking surface and prevents catching high heels and other objects between the bars. It is available in 25mm, 38mm and 50mm depths. When using Pultruded Grating, make sure the bearing bars in the grating panel are oriented in the correct direction for the application. Bearing bars should traverse from support to support. Cross-rods are not intended to be applied in the span direction. Pultruded Grating has a primary advantage over moulded gratings: It has superior load-supporting ability over longer spans.

FRP GRATINGS Transparent Gratings

Brighter Colours Transparent Gratings have become increasingly popular to provide brighter colours for Facades, Sun Screening, Equipment Screening and Cladding Panels. Transparent Gratings are manufactured using translucent resins, lightly tinted, in a range of colours, which allows maximum light transmission to produce the perfect decorative effect. When lit from behind light refracts through the translucent mesh construction to illuminate the front surface to create a "glow" effect. Transparent Gratings, although offering high light transmission characteristics, offer excellent sun shade protection, whilst still providing the advantage of 68% air flow ventilation. Due to the unique design, they will allow differing amounts of sunlight to pass through the mesh, depending on the sun's angle.

SOLID FIBERGLASS PLATES Solid Fiberglass Plates

Many applications require a solid flooring for a variety of reasons, such as odor control in a wastewater plant or in an offshore drilling mud room, or possibly for safety reasons to prevent any small objects from falling through the flooring to the level below. For these instances, we has two solutions: our solid fibreglass plate and our covered plate grating (panel profiles).

Moulded Plates Moulded plate is manufactured by building up multiple layers of fiberglass reinforcement and specially-formulated resins. The result of this process is a solid composite panel offering both bidirectional strength and corrosion resistance.

Pultruded Plates Pultruded gritted plate is a solid anti-skid flooring, helps reduce worker slips and falls in both wet and dry applications. The grit surface can be fine, medium or coarse.
