4-H IS BASED ON RESEARCH

C.O.O.L.

COOKIN’ CLUB

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELING REQUIRED IN 2013/2014—The USDA is again requiring COOL for all livestock. This affidavit is located at, http://www.iowabeefcenter.org/content/COOL/COOL%20Forms.doc.

If you are interested in horses, the “Horsin’ Around” 4-H club is for you. The group is an actual 4-H club, and could serve as the 4-H member’s sole 4-H club if they choose. This is a great chance for all youth who are interested in horses (whether they own one or not) to learn more and get some hands on experience with horses. This is a great opportunity for those who live in town and like horses, even you don’t own one. Call Teresa Olson if you are interested in participating: (712) 867-4436.

Emmet County is starting up a new 4-H

project group focused on cooking food! This

group will practice experimenting using

different types of ingredients to make their

own food concoctions! They will also learn

food safety and the proper way to use

kitchen utensils, gadgets, and appliances.

The goal will be to get a trio or two of 4-H’ers

from the group to compete in the “Cook

This!” 4-H Culinary Challenge at the Iowa

State Fair next August. More information

about this can be found at: http://

www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/statefair/

cookthis. Volunteer leaders are Kevin Krull

and Carol Solberg. Sign up to be part of this

group (which will practice in the Graettinger

Home Ec classroom on dates/times to be

announced). A limited number of members

will be accepted—first come, first served—

for the first year of the group, so sign up

today—(712) 362-3434!

BUCKET BOTTLE CALVES

EAR TAGGERS

MARKET BEEF

We are still missing several ear

taggers that we lent out for people to

use to tag their livestock last spring. If

you have one of these, please return it

to the Extension Office ASAP so

people can use it for tagging animals

this year! Thanks!

If you have a bucket-bottle calf that

you plan to bring back as a breeding

heifer in 2013, you should have the

calf vaccinated for brucellosis before

10 months of age.

Pens of three and individual market beef

animals need to be weighed-in and DNA

verified on Saturday, December 14th

(snow date is December 21st) - location

will be announced. Ear tags must be in

before weigh-in and are for sale at the

Extension Office for $1.50 (FFA calves

must have FFA tags)!

****If you are planning to show beef at the

Iowa State Fair, you will need to have

your market calves verified through

retinal imaging. This will be done the

Friday afternoon (Dec 13th) before weigh

-in. (Let the Extension Office know by

December 6th if you plan to retinal

image calves for the Iowa State Fair so

that we will have enough supplies on

hand).

****Those who plan to verify for

Ak-Sar-Ben will do this on Saturday—let

us know by Dec 6th, so we have supplies

on hand.

Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF), a summer educational conference at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, MD, gives 4-H youth the opportunity to explore, develop, and refine the civic engagement skills they need to be outstanding leaders in their home communities and at the national level. CWF is for youth in grades 10-12, from across the country. CWF registration will open for the summer of 2014 trips in October.
