1. Welcome to Emmanuel 🏫

Hello!

Congratulations on joining Emmanuel — Emma as it’s known — and beginningyour new graduate courses. A glossy pamphlet will await your arrival, but thereare some things you may wish to know beforehand. There are always manyquestions, such as ‘How do I get to college (p 9)?’, ‘Where isBarnwell (p 13)?’, ‘What is a plodge (p 46)?’, and ‘Why do a lion, a duckand a Seagull represent Emma on University Challenge (p 48)?’

First, though, who are ‘we’? Emma has its own student unions, who representstudents to college bigwigs and vice versa, and run various events. Theundergraduates have ECSU (www.ecsu.org.uk), the graduates Emma MCR(www.emmamcr.org.uk). The MCR stands for the rights, welfare and privilegesof all graduate students and, more literally, for Middle CombinationRoom (p 44) (confusingly, both a body of people and a physical room incollege). An elected committee run a packed social calendar and help thoserunning the college understand what graduate students need. The primary roleof College is to ensure the wellbeing and welfare of all students, and we helpthem achieve that.

As part of both aspects of our role, we run the freshers’ week (p 5) activitiesfor the college. You’ll have opportunities to dine at a range of fineestablishments, to dance in our pop-up swing night and silent disco, and todiscover what current graduate students have been up to outside of such socialengagements (see grad talks, p 42 — refreshments gratis). Mostly you’ll havea chance to meet the rest of your cohort and find a few places in Cambridge thatwill make it feel like home. There’s an induction session and some tours ofCambridge and college, too.

One date for your calendar is Tuesday 4th October: the freshers’ dinner. Thissilver service meal will cost £12 (£16 with wine) and we hope you can join us!Most of our dinners are opt-in, but this is opt out, so email📧 [email protected] with any dietary requirements (including whetheryou would not like wine — we will assume wine otherwise) or📧 [email protected] if you do not wish to attend.

The canonical resource for information about the college is the college website. In particular, the official documents at www.emma.cam.ac.uk/about/

3

Page 4: Emmanuel Graduate Freshers’ Guide - emmamcr.org.uk · Emmanuel College MCR ... boogie to your heart’s content. For the surrealist in you, take off your headphones and watch the

documents are a comprehensive compilation. For information from theUniversity, see www.cambridgestudents.cam.ac.uk. This documentsummarises and highlights some details of these resources and covers many otheraspects of graduate life and study in Cambridge.

We recommend you print the How to Get Here (p 9) pages (including theannotated map of Cambridge) before you start your journey; also the Thingsto Bring (p 18) section needs no introduction. We include brief guides towelfare, sport, accommodation and many other aspects of life in Cambridge.International students (p 29) should read the section of that name, andeverybody will benefit from the Computing (p 33) overview. Finally, thesubstantial A–Z (p 39) may help you decipher the odd Cambridgism.

We’re sure you’ll have many questions that this guide doesn’t answer. So to help,a current Emmanuel graduate student (known as a duck) is assigned to eachfresher (duckling). Ducks are happy to answer questions about Cambridge andcollege — and in most cases, your duck will also be at your department orfaculty. Once you arrive in Cambridge, your ducks will arrange to meet all theirducklings. And there will be an event in the first week of October for you all, together. The ducks will email shortly to introduce themselves.

Graduate students at Emma come from a wide range of backgrounds and spendtheir time in Cambridge doing an even wider range of things. As you perusethese pages we hope you feel the same excitement about your time here that wedo every day. We look forward to meeting you very shortly indeed.

— David Baynard, MCR President

4. Things to bring 💼

Documents

Receipt for PREPAYMENT (P 23)

The porters will give you your room key once you show them this.

Passports

UK residents should bring a passport as it is needed if you want to be paid by thecollege for teaching or bar work. The same applies for registering with some GPservices.

Vaccination records

You’ll need these to register for medical services (which you must do once youarrive) even if you are already registered with the NHS.

This year, the government body responsible for public health are recommendingthat all freshers up to the age of 25 who are at a uk university for the first timeregister for a meningitis W vaccination (don’t Google it; search the NHSchoices website). This can be done before arrival in Cambridge.

For dress

It can get quite cold in the winter and spring, so bring some warm clothes, including a good winter coat and plenty of jumpers (sweaters, for the NorthAmericans among us). Keep in mind that the weather in Britain is often quitevariable, so be prepared for your daily downpour (umbrellas for the walkers, waterproof trousers for the cyclists).

18

Page 19: Emmanuel Graduate Freshers’ Guide - emmamcr.org.uk · Emmanuel College MCR ... boogie to your heart’s content. For the surrealist in you, take off your headphones and watch the

Formal wear

For matriculation in October, the dress code is either a dark suit and white shirt,a dark skirt with a white blouse, or a dark dress. The MCR also holds fortnightlyformal dinners where dresses and suits are appropriate. More formal Black Tiedinners are organized in the autumn/fall and spring, for which you will need aformal dress or dinner jacket.

Gowns (p 42) are required for many college functions and should be worn atMCR formal dinners. The Porters’ Lodge often have secondhand gowns to buyin the first week or two of term. Gowns can also be purchased secondhand fromthe Graduate Union (goo.gl/Q3tuag) or new from Ryder and Amies, 22 King’sParade (www.ryderamies.co.uk,📞 01223 350371). New gowns can costfrom £50–100.

For your college room

College accommodation provides each student a single room equipped with abed, coffee table, desk, lamp, chair, bookshelf, rubbish bin, and drawers orwardrobe storage. Some rooms will include a small refrigerator (those roomswithout a fridge will have access to one in a nearby kitchen). Each room isdifferent, but many students benefit from bringing an additional lamp for morelighting. Also, some rooms have few power outlets, so bringing a strip multiplugadaptor is also recommended (note that the non-strip style is banned incollege and many departments).

You will need to provide your own bed linen (college beds are single size),although a single duvet and pillow are provided. There are many shops withinwalking distance of Emma where you might find additional linens and blankets.

A hoover/vacuum can be found in your property, but basic cleaning suppliessuch as wipes or disposable towels may be useful.

For the kitchen

All graduate houses have their own kitchens so it is advisable to bring some basickitchen items if you intend to be cooking regularly, e.g. plate, bowl, cups, cutlery. However, kitchens are shared between several graduate students so theremay be some community crockery available that has been left by previousstudents.

For laundry

All washing machines are accompanied by driers, but you may want an airingrack — this is especially handy for airing sports gear, before you can get to washit. Speaking of which…

For sports

Emmanuel has several free sports facilities, including an indoor gym, squashcourts, tennis courts, football and rugby pitches, a cricket pitch, ping pong, croquet, and an outdoor swimming pool. It is advisable to bring appropriatesports gear and proper shoes for these activities. The local area is ideal for cycling(see goo.gl/Ar4GRs for proof). Squash racquets and balls are available at theMCR and tennis racquets are available at the Porter’s Lodge for student use.

For transport

Most students find a bike very helpful. Make sure you bring or buy a sturdylock, lights, and a helmet. Repair tools and emergency bike lights are available inthe Porter’s lodge. You may not want to bring a bike that would be expensive toreplace. Secondhand bicycles can be purchased in several shops in town and newbikes are on sale at the Fresher’s Fair on Parker’s Piece in the first few weeks.

If you intend to cycle in Cambridge it is probably worth joiningwww.cyclinguk.org (£21.50 per year), who offer third party liability insuranceto all members. The college’s Health & Safety Handbook (atwww.emma.cam.ac.uk/about/documents) has some advice on cycling.

Railcard

If you’re interested in cheap train travel, you can apply at www.railcard.co.ukor a train station for a 16-25 Railcard for £30 to get 33% off all rail fares for ayear (or £70 for 3 years). If you’re aged between 16 to 25 years old, you’ll need apassport photo and proof of your date of birth (e.g. passport, UK driving licence, birth certificate or, for non-UK nationals, national identity card).

You won’t need a car. More specifically, you are not allowed to keep a car inCambridge without permission from your tutor (see the University Proctors’pronouncement , or documents at www.proctors.cam.ac.uk/documents, specifically concerning Motor vehicles ). Note that carparking is chaotic and unreliable. Transport in Cambridge revolves around thebike, bus and taxi.

The rules for accommodation are set out in Domestic Matters (atwww.emma.cam.ac.uk/about/documents). Don’t bring a pet, as furry friendsare not welcome in College accommodation. Don’t bring networkingequipment, as all accommodation has WiFi, and you aren’t allowed to operateyour own wireless network. Finally, college is fairly strict on furniture — so nobeds or mattresses either 😥.

5. Accommodation 🏰

Any queries about your room allocation should be addressed to the Collegeregistrar, Dr. Anna Osipova (📧 [email protected]). The relevantofficial college document is titled Domestic Matters .

Students from outside the UK and Ireland are guaranteed Collegeaccommodation for the first three years of their stay. UK residents areguaranteed College accommodation for the first year only, though it issometimes possible to stay in College accommodation longer, depending onavailability.

College rooms are mostly single, dormitory-style rooms, with shared kitchens, bathrooms and common areas. The exceptions are a handful of self-containedflats for couples; email📧 Anna for more information.

Most houses have a bedder (p 39) who will empty bins, vacuum, and clean incommunal areas and generally make life far too easy — though you will still haveto clean your own room, keep the place tidy and do your own washing up.Anything broken should be reported in the online maintenance log. Anythingelse should be reported to📧 [email protected].

The GU (p 42) provide some information for private rental (goo.gl/DreS7M)

Rent

Rent is calculated based on four factors.

1. Grade of room, as judged by the MCR committee.

2. Distance from college.

3. Year of arrival.

4. Inflation in subsequent years.

For everyone living in College accommodation, a Catering Fixed Charge(CFC) is included in the rent. In exchange for paying this charge, food atinformal hall is discounted. Those who live closer to College pay a higher CFC

22

than those who live further away as it’s expected they’ll eat in hall more often. Those who live out of College accommodation don’t pay CFC and thereforedon’t have any discount.

The figures below apply for students joining the college this year, living on themain college site. Students living off site will pay a little less, for the reasonsgiven above.

Room grade Maximum weekly rent for 2017/8

1 £112.00

2 £120.90

3 £129.90

4 £138.80

5 £147.80

6 £156.70

7 £165.60

8 £174.60

Insurance

The college-wide insurance policy (included in rent) will be added onto yourcollege bill for the time that you are in residence and covers most common itemsin a student’s room. It also covers bikes up to £200 and extra items like musicalinstruments can be added to the policy for a small extra charge online. Moredetails can be found in the official information (www.emma.cam.ac.uk/about/documents) from college (the student insurance flyer ).

Prepayment

You will have been asked to pay a pre-payment before arrival into Cambridge;this is not a deposit as charged in the private rental sector. It is equivalent in costto an estimate of the bill (p 39) you’ll receive at the end of each term. Theprepayment includes a term’s worth of rent and a prepayment for meals, and willbe subtracted from your college bill in your final term.

If you have any issues with payment, you should contact one of the graduatetutors (see College Welfare Contacts, p 25).

6. Welfare 💆

It bears repeating: the primary role of College is to ensure the wellbeing andwelfare of all students throughout their time at Emma. Here is an introductionto the people and welfare resources on offer in college and throughout the wideruniversity.

Welfare at Emmanuel College concerns a broad range of topics. Most of us felt alittle like imposters when we started; we’re all taking a little bit of a leap into thedark and things aren’t always going to go right. Graduate study is not supposedto be easy, but in the right environment, and with the right support networks, itcan be manageable. Once you arrive at the college there will be lots of people tolisten, console and support you if necessary. It’s one of the things that makesEmmanuel, and Cambridge more generally, a wonderful place to do research.

Acute financial and accommodation issues are very common, and academicdifficulties (in particular concerning careers) are faced by almost everybody atsome point. The college is an environment in which most people feelcomfortable discussing all these challenges.

Should you have any queries or concerns regarding welfare at EmmanuelCollege or any pre-arrival access or support requirements, contact the collegeregistrar, Dr. Anna Osipova (📧 [email protected]).

In case of an emergency in college ALWAYS go to the Porters’ Lodge first. They can help you further.

College welfare

The tutorial system

The college has a statutory duty and many years experience concerning issuesfacing graduate students. This mainly occurs through the tutorial system; tutors, who are academics and fellows of the college, individually respond to welfareissues and and collectively plan to prevent their occurrence. Students with Families

Starting a postgraduate course at Cambridge alongside maintaining daily familylife can be tough. While the Emma MCR tries to put on some events for ourstudents with families, the Graduate Union (see GU, p 42) provides moreregular, university-wide events, including a weekly toddler coffee morning, fortnightly family film nights and other events throughout the year, like a familypicnic in summer. The GU also provides excellent support and information forstudents with families, which they are continuing to develop based on studentfeedback, and the dedicated GU Families Officer can be contacted for furtherassistance. 7. International students ✈

Welcome to the UK! Like Gandhi, Wittgenstein, and countless others beforeand since, you are (or will soon be) an international student in the UK — withall the challenges, privileges, frustration and excitement that brings. Pubs and teashops, ‘Harry Potter gowns (p 42)’ and Formal Halls; Marmite and mushy peas;cricket and croquet; castles and crypts, bikes and baskets… England certainly ismuch more than these oddities and stereotypes, but it’s the small details of life inthe UK that make it both foreign and endearing.

While things may seem quaintly and traditionally British, Cambridge is also anincredibly international community, from its student societies to the culinarydelights of Mill Road. You will no doubt find your feet quickly, but in themeantime, your international officer (Maria,📧 [email protected]) would be glad to answer any questionsyou might have about your arrival and everyday life in the UK.

As one tiny example, the UK power grid operates on 230 V and 50 Hz. Many apair of American hair straighteners have been fried (Rei offer guidance).Laptop chargers should be ok. And UK plugs are not the same as those inthe rest of Europe.

Note in particular the sections on banking (p 30) and health care (p 31), asthere are things you’ll need to do concerning each as soon as you arrive.

Dial📞📞 999 to contact the emergency services in the UK.

Visa

The MCR is not qualified to advise on individual visa issues; contact the TutorialOffice at Emmanuel (Dr. Anna Osipova,📧 [email protected]).

Note that most student visa holders will be required to sign a register at theporters’ lodge (p 46) once a term, to demonstrate their residency inCambridge and stay in compliance of their visa. You should receive an emailfrom the Tutorial office periodically about this.

29

Page 30: Emmanuel Graduate Freshers’ Guide - emmamcr.org.uk · Emmanuel College MCR ... boogie to your heart’s content. For the surrealist in you, take off your headphones and watch the

Banking

Soon after arrival, you’ll need to set up a bank account in the UK for localtransactions. This will be current account, with a card for withdrawals atcashpoints (ATMs). You’ll be able to organise your finances and make paymentsto other UK accounts through electronic banking.

Some of the closest banks to Emmanuel include Barclays, Santander, HSBC,Lloyds, and Metro but there are many others. Building societies provide mostbanking services. Check what options they have for international students(often, none), or students in general. Some, like HSBC, might offer special“Passport” accounts for international students, but charge a monthly fee. Try tofind a current account with no fees, or that will let you make withdrawals andtransfers without charge from a bank in your home country.

Set up an appointment with a bank to open an account. Lines will be longduring Fresher’s Week.

Ask college (Dr. Anna Osipova,📧 [email protected]) for a letter toopen a bank account. Note that different banks will ask for different things. The letter will probably need to confirm that you have a guaranteed place on acourse that is longer than six months, and show starting and ending dates — butmake sure to check.

Phones

Almost all of the major phone companies will provide you with a pay-as-you-go(PAYG) SIM card for free, which you can top up as you need. This would be agood option for one year courses. Nearby Emmanuel, you can check outoptions at mobile stores like the Carphone Warehouse, or individual carriers likeVodafone, EE, O2… It’s worth comparing rates within the UK and to yourhome country.

If you’re sticking around for two years or more, consider a phone contract.Mobile phone contracts can be more difficult for students to obtain, as theyoften require credit history – but it’s worth inquiring.

A popular alternative for both PAYG or contract options is to use online mobilecompanies like Giffgaff (giffgaff.com) or Talkmobile (talkmobile.co.uk),which send you your SIM card by mail. You can even order this in advance toyour college address (see mail, p 44). Bring along an unlocked phone, insert the

Cambridge has 4G coverage.

Health care

Health, as the saying goes, is wealth. The National Health Service (NHS) is theUK’s state healthcare system providing a wide range of health care servicesincluding appointments with a doctor, hospital treatment and dental care (seewww.camstudenthealth.nhs.uk). EU nationals and Tier 4 visa holders areentitled to receive treatment from the NHS free of charge in GeneralPractitioner (GP) Surgeries, health care centres, and hospitals. This applies toyour spouse and children if they are in the UK as your visa dependants.

📄📄 Non-UK European Economic Area (EEA) nationals and their familyshould obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before comingto the UK.

You must register with a Cambridge doctor (p 41) (GP) as soon as you arrivein Cambridge. You can find a list of local practices on the College website orrequest recommended GPs and medical centres from Dr. Anna Osipova(📧 [email protected]).

You will need to pay for dental treatments as well as for any medicalprescription to be collected from a pharmacy; dental problems are not only apain in the mouth but also in the pocket. In the University dental practice youwill have easy access to NHS prices for the different treatments(www.dental.cam.ac.uk); you only need to give your details and college nameto register.

The College also has a nurse who is available during term time to offer advice tostudents (see college welfare contacts, p 25). For further details aboutthe full range of medical support available within College, ask at the Porter’sLodge for the times of regular surgeries during NPR (p 45).

🏥🏥 If you require urgent emergency medical assistance and are unable totravel to the hospital, either contact the Porters’ Lodge, if you are living inCollege accommodation, or dial📞📞 999 free from any phone and ask forthe ambulance service. In some university buildings you need to dial📞 1999(1 for an outside line).
