Rev.Fr Asanka Rathnayake 4. Introduction: After the two successful Prosthetic Limb Clinics conducted in Sri Lanka in 2009, our burden to help the war victims continually was something that we had in our project pipeline. During a casual conversation followed by an official submission of our report of the previous projects to Dr Allwin a plastic surgeon who is a member of our congregation who had the same desire offered to help our people who are in need of plastic surgeries. These plastic surgery operations are not only to treat deep scars to a certain level but also to help them to use their limbs which are affected due to injuries in nerves or badly burned skin. Even though the war has come to an end, the suffering of the people affected by war is very real and is going on, in Sri Lanka. We believe that God has opened a new path to help these suffering people through Dr Allwin and his friends dedicated humanitarian mission. 5. Action:

Once we decided to conduct the medical clinic at Vavuniya general hospital, Pastor Shanthan met Doctors and officials in the Vavuniya general hospital and submitted a proposal which was then accepted by both parties .We agreed to have the medical clinic from 8th October 2011 to 16th October 2011. Thereafter the details of the medical clinic were advertised in both local and national newspapers to reach people.

In the meantime Dr Allwin and Dr Niroshan were in the process of collecting medical tools and other items locally which were difficult to be obtained in Sri Lanka.

All of us arrived in Colombo, Srilanka on 7th of October 2011 and then travelled to Vavuniya on the same day. Medical items which were was donated by Dr Allwin

On the following day 8th of October, We had a brief conference with local doctors and nurses at Vavuniya General Hospital. Doctors introduced themselves with each other and discussed about the surgeries, practical matters and other arrangements.

On the same day doctors have started assessing patients at the Vavuniya hospital. After successfully having had the medical clinic, Dr Allwin and Dr Niroshan left Srilanka to UK on the 17th October 2011 and rest of us remained in Srilanka for further follow up ministries until 26th of October 2011

6. Clinical findings:

Patients registered themselves at the Vavuniya General Hospital following the advertisements that were published in both local and national newspapers. Approximately 100 patients registered themselves out of which 30 patients were streamlined by the doctors and identified as patients who did not require any treatment as the doctors classified those operations as “cosmetic operations” The remaining patients were further streamlined and 42 were selected for the surgical treatment. The remaining 28 were scheduled for the next mission as time & resources were limited. The treated patients were of the following age range 8-64 and had their injuries caused by war (shrapnel injuries, Bullet wounds) or accidental fire (severe facial and body burns). Their injuries varied from deep scars to severe burns. Some of the surgeries lasted up to five hours. Treating 42 patients within 9 days would have been an impossible task to achieve, if not for the dedication of our medial team of both U.K and Sri Lanka local medical staff.

7. Plastic surgery follow-up: We left Colombo on the 21st to Vavuniya. The purpose of our visit was to check on the progress of the recovery of our patients. As unlike our previous mission this mission is a complex and advanced form of treatment. The patients who were able to travel were then gathered at a central location in Kilinochchi and Vavuniya depending on their locality.

The gathering comprised an assessment with Dr. Allwin over the phone as he has returned to the U.K. The patients were able to pass on their thanks to Dr. Allwin & to Dr Niroshan. The patients were given healthy food items for their physical needs and also a word of encouragement through Jesus Christ for their spiritual needs.

Dr. Niroshan and Dr. Allwin are still co-ordinating with Dr. Baskaran who is in Vavuniya G.H about the wellbeing of the treated patients. By the grace of God the patients treated are all keeping well and progressively improving.

Prosthetic limb patients’ follow-ups: Following our prosthetic limb camps in 2009 (Vavuniya IDP camp & Pampaimadhu ladies detention camp) we treated many patients who were internally displaced; following the resettlement process we were unable to locate many patients. A few of them were located with the the help of Government agents and Government Hospitals. The patients were resettled in various areas for e.g. Valvettithurai, Point pedro, Jaffna, Nelliadi, Kilinochchie and Mullaitheevu District. Many have benefited as a result of the prosthetic limbs and have started to carry on with their day to day lives with the help of their families. However many are still in need. A few of them are as follows.

9. Christian retreat for High school students from Oddisuddan. Higher school students from war affected areas were taken on a school retreat to Colombo during 10th-13th of November 2011. This was in order to visit various places such as the Colombo World Trade Centre, various banks, Schools, Planetarium, SLBC and the Dehiwala Zoo. Forty students were accompanied by their respective teachers, principals and other officials of twenty. When Government officials who were organising this trip approached us and asked if we could provide an accommodation and food for these students. Also they were concern about the spiritual welfare of these students due to the past war. We were able to organise this trip at Meth Arana, Methodist Retreat Centre, Athurugiriya through Sis Bavani Mahendren and coordinated by Pastor Shanthan, his family and friends. Pastor Shanthan and his friends shared Jesus Christ through songs, drama and preaching the Word of God. The theme was the Love of Christ and those students, teachers and even principal of the school told us that they are really touched and want to know more about Lord Jesus Christ.

11. Future plans: We are aiming to support the treated plastic surgery patients by helping them with self-employment opportunities, educational and spiritual needs. In addition continuous follow up is required to check health conditions of the treated plastic surgery patients. This task will be co-ordinated by Pastor Shanthan and Bishop Santhanapillai in Srilanka. Another plastic surgery mission is already being planned for middle of next year 2012.We believe by God’s Grace future mission will bring joy and self-esteem for more suffering people in Srilanka. While we having the plastic surgery mission, we are planning to gather prosthetic limb patients in some centralised places like kilinochchie or Jaffna so that we can meet all of them. The prosthetic limb patients whom we visited are in great need of assistance to improve their life styles. Although they are resettled back in to their own houses but still many do not have any income or job. We can support them to start a self-employment which may help them to sustain their families financially. Some of the self-employment opportunities are like poultry farm (30,000 Rs) or sewing machine (Electric machine35,000 Rs) Also we are helping children and university students financially so that they can continue their education and we will continue to do this in future.

12. Summary:

This project was done purely on a humanitarian basis with a not for profit objective. However if we look at the cost analysis for this project it would have exceeded £200,000. A breakdown of this would be £3000 worth of medical equipment and the cost of 42 surgeries that were carried out would have cost over £160,000 which involved two plastic surgeons from U.K and six doctors along with theatre nurses and other staffs from Srilanka who contributed more than twelve hours per day for nine days. The other related expenses would have cost in excess of £35,000 for facilities related to the surgery and treated patients.

This task would have been an impossible one to achieve as the amounts involved are beyond our comprehension. The Doctors involved, the Sri Lankan government and other officials involved helped us immensely and made this task possible. Due to their immense help dedication and contribution we were able to achieve this project with less than £5500. In monetary terms this project has saved more than £240,000. And of course the life changes that were done with this £5500 are immeasurable. Special thanks goes out to the two doctors from the U.K who even bore their own air expenses and our thanks also goes out to an anonymous contributor who sponsored the Air tickets of the two church workers who travelled form the U.K. Doctors who were involved in this mission are continually monitoring the treated patients of their recovery and Church workers are visiting them to give spiritual counselling for their emotional welfare. Also their financial needs may be met through contributors so that they can improve their life style. Our co-ordinators in Srilanka will continue to visit the prosthetic limb patients to help us to assess their financial and spiritual needs. According to their report, God may help us to a way to help them. The need for people in Srilanka is enormous but through our Lord Jesus and generous contributors we can make an impact in changing the lives of people. Join with us in Prayer and
