“Three cheers for The Emerald Guide! It fills a void that resulted from the demise of The Sporting News Baseball Guide in 2006 and is a worthy successor to that esteemed publication. For those of us who can’t get through a season without having the facts and figures at our fingertips, the Emerald Guide is an absolute treasure.”dick beverage baseball historian and secretary-treasurer of the association of professional ball players of america

“The tradition of a baseball guide goes back to the 1860s and to Henry Chadwick, ‘Father Baseball.’ Through thick and (sometimes) thin, guides were published by the Spalding and Reach companies, by the Commissioner’s Office and by The Sporting News. Serious students of baseball can rejoice that the Emerald Guide project has stepped into the breach, reviving a custom without which we would all be the poorer.”steve gietschier former senior managing editor of the Sporting News and editor of the Complete Baseball Record Book

  • 2012 MAJOR LEAGUE SEASON IN REVIEW VII

The Emerald Guide to Baseball is our attempt to fill the gap in the historical record created by the recent demise of the Sporting News Baseball Guide. First published in 1942, Sporting News Guide was truly the annual book of record for our National Pastime. It is our great privilege to document for posterity a slice of recent baseball history in our new book.

The Emerald Guide is available in both a printed version and in a downloadable PDF format. The 2013 edition of the Emerald Guide runs nearly 600 pages and covers the season; it also includes a 2013 directory of Major League Baseball.

Historically, the primary purpose of annual baseball guides has been the publication of the official league standings plus the official team and individual statistics for both Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball. Many other types of content have been included in the annual guides over the years, but these core statistics were always the book’s raison d’etre.

Our new Emerald Guide follows faithfully in that tradition, containing the official batting, pitching, and fielding statistics for every team and every player in the Major Leagues plus extensive lists of league leaders. As with the TSN Guides, the Minor League Baseball section in our book includes the Mexican League but does not include independent leagues, foreign leagues, or winter leagues (aside from standings and leaders for the Dominican and Venezuelan Summer Leagues).

Another key function that the annual guides have historically filled is presenting information on the upcoming major league season. The World Wide Web has become the place most fans look for such information in recent years, but it is still important for this information to be recorded for posterity. The Web is a wonderful tool but too much of its content is ephemeral.

We are proud to publish in our new Emerald Guide an enormous amount of information that was never included between the covers of the old TSN Guides. We hope you like the editorial mix we chose. Our book does not include every type of information that the old Sporting News Guides printed, however.

Contact information for Major League Baseball, Minor League Baseball, and many other related organizations important to the baseball community is contained in the Directory section.

The 2013 edition of the Emerald Guide includes the following information for each major league team:

    • Schedules for spring training and the 2013 regular season;• Front office directories, including executive officers and base-

ball operations staff;• Minor league affiliates, including managers and coaches;• Spring training rosters, including non-roster invitees;• Radio, television, and cable TV broadcast information,

including Spanish-language broadcasts; and• The most comprehensive lists of career batting and pitching

leaders for each franchise ever printed in an annual guide.

2012 season in reviewThis section begins with a substantive essay documenting the major events in the world of baseball in 2013, both on and off the field. Also included are:

    • Detailed standings and breakdowns;• Complete batting/pitching/fielding statistics;• Top qualifiers and department leaders;• Active career leader boards;• Notable performances;• Day-by-day game logs;• All-Star Game box score and play-by-play;• Postseason box scores and play-by-play accounts;• Postseason register;• Umpires roster;• Transactions logs;• Coverage of the June first-year player draft;• Major league debuts; and finally,• The most detailed baseball necrology ever published.

eXPanDeD sTanDingsExpanded Standings for the major leagues and include team home/away records, records in one-run and extra inning games, records vs. LHP/RHP, records vs. each division, in interleague play, and vs. each opponent. Also shown for the NL and AL are total and average attendance, head-to-head Won-Lost records, and head-to-head Runs Scored/Runs Allowed data. Final wildcard standings are shown with each team’s expected win total and “luck” calculation. Also listed are club payrolls (from Cot’s Baseball Contracts) and the franchise values as reported annually by Forbes magazine. The 2013 Ballpark Factors are calculated by Pete Palmer of ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia. [NOTE: Interleague games are not included in the ballpark factor computations.] Similar, though less extensive information is presented for each minor league.

Comprehensive team and individual batting statistics include separate listings for designated hitters and pinch hitting. Regarding players with stints for multiple clubs, statistics are broken out separately, as well as showing thier season totals summed. The alphabetic listing includes pitcher batting results and is followed by the names of those who appeared in games without garnering a plate appearance. Fielding statistics are broken out by position. Leader boards in over 45 batting and pitching categories show the Top Five performers in each major league. Minor league leader boards cover 42 batting and pitching categories.

aCTive Career leaDer boarDsThe Top 25 active career batting and pitching leaders are also listed in 62 major categories.

TransaCTionsTransactions Logs contain all moves pertaining to each club’s 40-player roster, listed chronologically.

A separate table lists each teamís games started by position as well as its most frequent lineup used.

all-sTar gaMe anD PosTseasonBox scores and play-by-play accounts are shown for the Midsummer Classic and all games of the Fall Classic. Box scores for Division and Championship Series games are included as well as composite postseason registers for batters and pitchers.

Major league DebuTsThe Major League Debut section contains all players who made their first big-league appearance in 2013. The players are listed by club, with date of birth, place of birth, position, height/weight, bats/throws, and signing data (date, draft year, round, overall pick number, and recommending scout).

firsT-year Player DrafT The First-Year Player Draft includes a complete listing of players (mostly amateur) selected in the annual June cavalcade, including their full name, date of birth, height/weight, bats/throws, position, school, level, and bonus amount (if known).

neCrologyThe Emerald Guide necrology documents the passing of each major leaguer with a brief baseball epitaph, not merely a regurgitation of a statistical line. The minor league necrology is the most thorough ever published. Among other features, it recognizes the military service of the deceased players.

uMPire regisTerThe Umpire Register shows the full name, date of birth, place of birth, debut year, crew assignment, uniform number, ejections, and number of games broke out by position for all active men in blue.

siDebarsThroughout the Emerald Guide, we have included other significant historical information for reference purposes. A list of these sidebars appears at the end of the Table of Contents. Sidebars include the annual award winners for the Baseball Writers’ Association of America awards with voting totals. Other important major league and minor league awards, including those from the Sporting News and Baseball America are also shown.

Winners of the Most Valuable Player, Cy Young, Rookie of the Year, and Manager of the Year awards are listed. Ex Post Facto selections for MVPs, Pitchers of the Year, and Rookies of the Year are included, as picked by the editors of the ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia, for every year and league in which those awards were not originally given.

Other sidebars include a listing of all members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame (sorted by type of election and year inducted) as well as results of each World Series, League Championship Series, and Division Series. Also included is a historical listing of top selections of the First-Year Player Draft, with bonus amounts.

HisTory of annual baseball guiDesSince professional league play began in 1876, there have been dozens of different types of annual baseball books that have used the term guide in their titles. However, to a well-read baseball fan, the term annual guide normally refers to a series of official or quasi-official books that published the official batting, pitching, and fielding statistics for both the minor leagues and major leagues for the previous season.

The most important series of annual baseball guides were:• The Spalding Guides, 1876–1939;• The Reach Guides, 1883–1939;• The combined Spalding-Reach Guides, 1940–41; and• The Sporting News Guides, 1942–2006.

Note that the season covered in each guide was the year before the publication/cover date. Also note that the titles for these annual guides often changed over the years. For example, the Sporting News series of guides had five different titles from 1942 through 2006. All except the first edition in 1942—which was entitled the Official Baseball Record Book—contained the phrase “baseball guide.”

The Spalding Guides from 1908–1924 did not contain minor league statistics. During this period; Spalding also published annual Spalding Record books, which contained the missing minor league information as well as somewhat less major league coverage.

The unofficial 1943 Baseball Guide and Record Book published by the Sporting News truncated its minor league statistics. Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis put out a very extensive official guide for 1943 that was complete. Barnes also published an official baseball guide in 1945 (covering both the 1943 and 1944 seasons) and in 1946.
