For more information, visit http://www.emeraldashborer.info. This site is the most definitive source of information on the borer available anywhere. Please read it and become familiar with the threat. Our website at www.sharpleycivic.org has a very informative video everyone needs to look at. Where do Delaware and Sharpley stand? The Delaware Department of Agriculture has warned that the borer has spread to every state surrounding Delaware, and is expected to begin infesting Delaware trees in as little as one year. Sharpley has 351 green and white ash trees, and each of these trees will be killed by the borer within one year of infestation if not properly treated. Can ash trees be protected from the borer? Trees are treated by injecting an insecticide either into the ground around a tree, or directly into the bark of the tree. Treatments have to be repeated every 12 to 24 months and cost approximately $100 per tree for each application. What is the overall condition of our street trees? We also must consider that most of our street trees, not just the ash trees, have already reached the 50 year average life expectancy of large trees with restricted root systems and are showing signs of stress and decline. Even without the borer, we will need to replace dying and diseased trees at an increasing rate over the next 10 to 20 years. What does this mean financially? Our budget resources will be stretched beyond our current capacity, and we will need to develop a sound strategy for replacing large numbers of aging trees while keeping the borer at bay. If we do nothing all 351 of our ash trees can be killed in as little as five years. The average cost to replace a mature ash tree, including removal, stump grinding and replanting, varies from $1500 to $2,000. That works out to a total replacement cost of from $535,500 to $714,000. If spread over 5 years, that amounts to between $107,100 and $142,800 per year, all on top of all our other costs of tree management and snow removal. Compare that to our current street tree budget of $18,000 per year. If we opt to treat our ash trees, we can expect to spend roughly $35,700 every 12 to 24 months, a small fraction of the cost of removing all our ash trees, but still a huge sum. What has the Sharpley Board been doing? Our board and street tree committee have been working on this issue since last spring. We have been studying different options for dealing with the threat, and discussing the issue with other civic associations and with the state Urban Forester’s office. Last October we also participated in a state sponsored conference focused on the
