I think, first of all, the part that relates to backup

virtual machines. I've seen better and fastersolutions, for example: Veeam.


We pretend to start image backups fromVMware, but we are also working with Xen andRHEV, and this product doesn't support thoseplatforms.


Backup of physical servers. I know that Veeam

have vehemently said they will never go downthat route but it's a feature I need, and badly.Having the ability to use Veeam within all ourvirtual environments is fantastic but it alsomeans we still have a requirement to use TSMto back up our physical servers via an agent.With the Endpoint Protection feature announcedrecently I can only hope that this develops intothe backup of all physical devices and allowmanagement through the Veeam console.

With Networker 8.0 I had an issue relatedto VMware VADP backups.An Imagelevel backup of a RHEL VM finishedsuccessfully, but when I tried to restore it thetransfer speed was very low, and the restore

operation took 20 hours to restore 17 GB whichrepresents 50% of total VM size. I was thenobliged to abort the restore operation becausethere was backup jobs planned and Networkerwas deployed with only one tape drive in thiscase (the tape drive can't write backups andperform restores simultaneously). I contactedthe support team to analyze thisperformance issue. They said that thishappened because it was a Linux machinebacked up with Windows Vcenter Proxy. For me

this is not acceptable... I hope this will beresolved in the 8.2 version of Networker,because restore speed is important (RTO)


Recently I've been discussing the capabilities ofEndpoint Protection with a Veeam Rep. aroundthe area of enterprise applications. In thisinstance I'm focused on SQL and Exchange.Despite my protestations we are still using

physical exchange servers (and I doubt we'rethe only enterprise) so being able to get a goodbackup of those servers is critical to allowreplacement of current backup solutions. Rightnow Veeam are not confident with Exchangebackups and would recommend one of theDAGs to be virtual to ensure the backupconsistency. For SQL however they are happywith their testing and while not being a releasedfeature it is something that can be backed up viaEndpoint Protection. This area of development

for Veeam is going to be a critical one for themto truly enter the enterprise backup arena.

Deep Dive: Improvements to My Organization



We are using a single product, with the same

licenses, to backup Oracle servers, SQLServers, Exchange, and our virtual environment.It also allows us to clone the backups to adisaster recovery site. With the integration withData Domain Boost we are significantly savingbackup space.


In our organization, we are working withNetworker on other sites, so we can share ourknowledge and experience.


I used to work for a company that provided

Backup/DR as a service to its clients we had tolook at various backup and recovery tools toquickly and easily bring back customers data.Before Veeam introduced the backup to tapeand WAN acceleration features we were using 3different products across a number of our clientsto provide the required services. In a large enterprise DataCenter there istraditionally a lot of applications/databaseswhich are owned by different administrators.Without a centralized backup solution, eachapplication/DB owner has to ensure its backup

separately and if a problem occurs, he has toexecute recovery tasks. result of a gas explosion of the corner of ourData Center. Entire Data Center was offline fora week. (Catastrophic Event could be classifiedas a Disaster). With a proper configuration ofthis product we were able to restore the Hyper-VInfrastructure to our 2nd Data Center andrestore functionality to about 20 Hospitals andImaging centers around the state of Ohio. (Tier1systems were restored with in 30 minutes andremaining filtered in).


It's been an overall improvement many places atour client sites where almost everyone runs vm'sor Hyper-V.


a. Other than it has saved us from hours of work

not having to rebuild servers and the many timesit has helped us recover data that was valuable,I don't know how to translate that into money,but it's no small thing. b. This one is HUGE: Wemoved our entire data center, from one physicallocation to another, mind you we are 24 houroperation with sites across the state relying onthe systems being up, and we never lost onehour of downtime. We used Veeam Backup andRecovery to migrate our entire Vmware Farmfrom old location to the new. It was awesome.
