From May 14- 22, 2013, the U.S. Embassy in coordination with AMIDEAST Oman organized a number of “Job Shadowing” visits for Access alumni in Muscat, Nizwa, Sohar and Salalah to various workplaces including hospitals, hotels, universities and companies. The visits were organized for the Access alumni who recently participated in a series of career development workshops supported by the U.S. Embassy in Muscat and implemented by AMIDEAST Oman. The career shadowing visits mark the final phase of the 2012 alumni project, aiming to give Omani students an opportunity to explore careers in various fields, learn about the work environments, and interact with employees. During theses visits, the 11 th grade students toured the workplaces they visited and learned about the various types of careers in each location, had a hands-on experience with the facilities and equipments used, explored the personal, academic and vocational skills required for each job through a fruitful interactions and discussions with the employees. At the end of the visits, the students developed a better understanding of the available careers and the study path each of them should follow in order to get where he/she wants. From May 14- 22, 2013, the U.S. Embassy in coordination with AMIDEAST Oman organized a number

of “Job Shadowing” visits for Access alumni in Muscat, Nizwa, Sohar and Salalah to various workplaces

John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State, visited the Sultanate and met with His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin

Said at Bait al Barakah on Tuesday, May 21.The meeting reviewed aspects of existing cooperation

between Oman and the U.S. in various fields, in addition to discussing developments in the regional and

international arenas. The meeting was also attended by Yousef bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Minister

Responsible for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Greta C. Holtz, and the delegation accompanying Secretary

Kerry. Earlier on Tuesday, Kerry, who reached Oman on a two- day visit, was received by the Minister

Responsible for Foreign Affairs, Sayyid Mohammed bin Salim bin Ali al Said, Head of the Protocols

Department at the Foreign Ministry, and Ambassador Holtz. On May 22, Secretary of State JKerry met

with the staff of U.S. Embassy Muscat, and gave words of recognition and appreciation to the work they

do in Oman and maintaining a good relationship between the two nations.

Ambassador Greta Holtz visited Sohar University on May 12 to launch the American Children’s Corner.

The corner contains an attractive selection of books on the U.S. including travel, art, teaching English,

American literature, history and information on where and how to study in the U.S. The Children’s

Corner is the first in Oman and the first children’s library in Sohar apart from the school libraries.

Learning Resource Center Manager Valerie Thompson said that children from the Sohar community and

schools would be invited to visit the Children’s Corner and reading and storytelling sessions would be

organised.

On May 13, the U.S. Embassy organized a viewing-party and interactive session for the Global Innovation

through Science and Technology (GIST) Tech web-chat. The event featured a live broadcasting of a

number of distinguished speakers and entrepreneurs from Washington D.C. for Omani audiences at the

Modern College of Business and Science in Muscat. The event was well received by the audience of

roughly 60 student and teachers who were eager to learn about how to advance ventures through cost-

efficient and network-oriented methods and some of the basic rules and strategies in order to become a

successful entrepreneur. Also, the audience actively involved with the virtual speakers by asking

The Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) initiative strengthens innovation and

entrepreneurship ecosystems through programs and partnerships focused on networking, skills development, and

connections to financing. GIST empowers youth across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia to develop new

technology-based products and companies that create economic and social value.

On May 7, EducationUSA adviser Laila Kabbash gave a presentation about EducationUSA at the Higher

College of Technology American Corner in Muscat. The presentation explored areas such as the

advantages and characteristics of studying at American educational institutions, the study system in the

U.S. and the steps and procedures in applying for undergraduate and graduate studies in the U.S. Also,

Alumni and Outreach Assistant Sami AL Kharusi gave a presentation about the U.S. exchange programs

and scholarships organized by the U.S. Embassy and offered to Omani students at the undergraduate and

graduate levels.

On May 13, EducationUSA Advisor Laila Kabbash gave a presentation at Dhofar University about

studying in the U.S., where she presented to over 65 students interested in graduate and summer study

in the U.S. Her presentation included the Fulbright Foreign Student program regarding master’s study

in the U.S. After Dhofar University, Laila visited Access English Microschoplarship Program classes in

Salalah, where students were interested in hearing about the differences in education and culture in the

U.S. Some Access students expressed interest in studying in the U.S. in the future and putting their

improved English skills to good use.
