MARCH 2016

Sole agencies:

February was a month for the bigguns: and as the year got properlyunderway suddenly the workshop washumming with the sound of high-endcars being tweaked as only we cantweak them...

So there’s a Merc ML63, a Porsche 911 Carrera S, five-cylinder Audi RS3 and aBMW M6 all under construction. When Iwalk down the stairs into the lowest levelof RGM and open the door it still gives mea thrill: custom-made stainless steel

exhausts being offered up in one corner,TIG-welding on the go in another, and inthe foreground special cars on dual postlifts. The hardware off which we make ourliving is spread (neatly!) around, and at aglance I can see giant brake discs andcalipers, and assorted boxes withperformance accessories. At a bench oneof the technical team is fabricating acustom part from aluminium, whileanother stands at the lathe, doing muchthe same.

Like most people I have good days andbad days, but I can honestly say – asRGMotorsport heads towards its 25thanniversary – that the bad days have beenfew and far between. That’s why the mostimportant thing to think about whenchoosing a career is whether you’re stillgoing to love it when there is more greythan black showing... and in my case Iknow I’ve made the right choice!

ODI, Tarlton, Dezzi, Gerotek and anumber of less formal venuesinbetween... our Golf7 R project carhas already got quite a reputation. Now it’s time for somethingcompletely different…Yep, our entry for the Jaguar SimolaHillclimb has been accepted, and we’reconfident that our tuning expertise plusthe driving ability of Jacques “TheStiglet” Joubert will see us up Knysna’sdaunting hill pretty darn quick. We’revery serious about achieving a successfuloutcome, and will be pulling out thestops to win our class.

It requires a very special kind of beastand not only must it be fast off the line, but it needs to be able to tackle someseriously fast bends – and have the righttorque in the right part of the rev-rangeto do it whilst heading upwards.Between now and the first weekend inMay we’ll be working closely with variouspartners – including suspension and dataanalysis – to get the best possiblecombination of attributes to make sureThe Stiglet can get it up fast…

THE HILLS ARE ALIVE...

PLAYING GOLF WITHBIGGER BALLS Our Golf7 R is no slouch – yet itremains a perfectly docile andenjoyable daily drive. Part of thesecret to our success is a veryspecial exhaust manifold, builtin-house by our Motorsportdepartment. Perfected afterworking tirelessly on ourdynamometer, we can now offerit as an ‘over the counter’fitment on Golf7 GTI and R, andalso the Audi S3. Ceramic coatingmakes it look pretty too, thoughit plays an important role inkeeping heat inside the headerand directing it away from thecombustion chamber and intothe turbo as quickly as possible.Ask our sales team about it!

Join us on a virtual tour ofRGMotorsport as we take youthrough the reception, ourService and Motorsportworkshops, the dynamometerrooms and our sparesdepartment (with an array ofcustom-made items unique toRGM conversions). Click https://vimeo.com/142866663to take the tour!

Fast factsDID YOU KNOW? The ROSE (Recycled Oil Saves theEnvironment) Foundationcollects about 2 000 litres ofused oil from us each month.

We don’t often see Porsches in ourworkshop and when we do it isalways a treat to work on them.Their engineering is fantastic andtheir build quality hard to fault.

One area where there’s room forimprovement though is in the exhaustsystem, which is relatively heavy andrestrictive. While there are importedsports systems (with pricing which is,frankly, absurd), we’ve built an RGM-Techniflow system for the owner of this Carrera S.

As you can see, the welding isextremely intricate, and the exhaust is

not only made up simply of a single pieceof pipe bent to shape, but a series ofaccurately cut, joined and then weldedsections of high-grade stainless steel. It isprocess which requires skill and patience.

By the time we were done and thePorsche had been through the hands ofthe dyno team (we also performed anelectronic control unit upgrade), theowner of this car had two things: a moremeaningful sound, and an extra 41 kW.It had also shed a few kilograms thanksmainly to us having replaced thestandard catalytic convertors withlightweight ‘race’ cats.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF GERMANWALKED IN THE OTHER DAY…

KING OF KINGS The jury is out as to what is theultimate hot hatch, and shoppingjust got a whole lot harder withthe arrival of the 2.0-litre, 224kWHonda Civic Type R and theimminent arrival of the 2.3-litreFord Focus RS, which musters 258 kW.But for sheer class and style we

reckon the new five-cylinder,2.5-litre Audi RS3 gets the nod,and with 270kW (along with465Nm) it is also the most potentfive-door hatch you can buy. But more is more, and with

some careful massaging by theRGMotorsport technical team, your RS3 gets bumped to 300kWand 500Nm, achieved with a bigbore downpipe from theturbocharger and enginemanagement upgrades. The combination really enables

the engine to breathe freely andachieve its full potential, and theend result is a true Uber-hatch…

Fast factsDID YOU KNOW? The startline of the Jaguar SimolaHillclimb is about 60 metresabove sealevel, and the finish –1.9 kilometres away – is 153 metres higher. Really fast cars take just over

40 seconds to get from one tothe other…

Our happy customers aren’t only theguys who have big ticket conversionscarried out in the Motorsportworkshop, and what our servicecustomers experience is just asimportant.

One of RGMotorsport’slongest-standing customers is SeanKempton who first walked through thedoor in the mid-1990s. A club racer andgeneral performance enthusiast, Seanthen owned a 733i, which Rob modifiedfor him. Today, Sean owns an M6 and awell-loved E36 M3 (which has had someperformance upgrades done to it years

back) and also brings his companyvehicles to us for servicing andmaintenance.

“The fact that I’ve been coming backfor well over 20 years tells a story initself,” says Sean, whose partner –Chantel – is also a dyed-in-the-woolpetrolhead with a passion for fast cars.“Sure, there are cheaper places for serviceand maintenance but it really is all abouttrust. That, along with theirthoroughness, is what I’ve alwaysappreciated as a customer. The service hasbeen of a consistently high level eversince I started coming here. They do morethan is asked, and at one stage I had fivevehicles being looked after by them.”
