Principal Report Student Achievements I would like to formally acknowledge the contribution made by Year 10 students and Year 11 Drama students to the Year 6 Orientation Day that was held last Thursday. All the students helped to make the day a success. Congratulations to Harrison Macreadie and Andrew Yates who have been selected in the Riverina Swim Team to contest the NSW CHS Championships later this term. Both swam exceptionally well at the Riverina Championships. Hayden Webb represented the school with distinction at the Lions Youth of the Year District Final at Strathmerton on the weekend. Unfortunately, Hayden didn’t progress through to the Victorian Final of the competition but he did an excellent job of representing the Albury region. Riverina Swim Success Harrison Macreadie and Andrew Yates both had a successful day at last Monday’s Riverina Swim Trials and as a result have gained selection in the Riverina Team to compete at the State Carnival between March 24 and 26 at Homebush. Andrew qualified in the 12yr 100m backstroke and was extremely unlucky in the 100m

Breastroke which he won by 5 seconds only to be

disqualified. Harrison continued his good form to qualify in the 13yr 100m Backstroke (1st place), Breastroke (1st), Freestyle (2nd), Butterfly (1st) and the 50m Freestyle (2nd). Well done to all these swimmers.

Other encouraging efforts came from the 14 yr girls relay (Emma Parker, Shantelle Cocking, Maddison Lieschke and Isabelle Kane) who placed 5th. While Elise Merkel gained a 6th place in the 17yr girls 100m Breastroke and Maddison Lieschke 4th in 14yr girls Breastroke.

Milliken Cup Victory Billabong secured a place in the Milliken Cup Grand Final with a hard fought win over Xavier High School last Tuesday. Played at the Culcairn Sports Ground in perfect conditions, Billabong received a surprise when Xavier’s skipper, Andrew Mackinlay, elected to bowl after winning the toss. But this decision was soon vindicated when Xavier quickly had Billabong reeling at 3 for 7 as all three members of the Billabong upper order failed to cope with the pace and accuracy of Xavier’s Adrian Sawyer. When all seemed lost, Joshua Jones and William Heriot put their heads down and played solid basic cricket until the drinks break which steadied the ship. After the break, Joshua moved into a more attacking role, and was well supported by William, who displayed clever shot selection and running between the wickets. When Joshua fell for 44, chasing quick runs and William for 23, they had placed Billabong in a position of maybe being an outside chance of victory. With some handy

contributions from the lower order, including Jeremy Finlayson, Billabong finished 7 for 105 from their 35 overs, setting Xavier a modest run rate of three per over. Despite some excellent early bowling from Captain Bryce Swift, Patrick Murray and William Heriot, Xavier made a very good start and quickly moved to 20 without any loss of wickets. Dylan Hall replaced Bryce and was immediately on target, two sharp slips catches by Bryce netted Dylan the Xavier opening pair, while

Patrick, then William Heriot maintained line and length to keep Xavier at bay. Jeremy Finlayson replaced Dylan and bowled three excellent overs to finish with 1 for 1. Suddenly, Xavier where in real trouble when Bryce replaced Jeremy and claimed a key middle order wicket. Needing just over 36 runs from the final 6 overs Xavier lost direction and crumbled against the sustained pressure applied by the Billabong bowlers and fieldsmen, to be all out for 78. The team deserves full credit for the manner in which they fought back from early disaster to earn an outstanding victory and a place in the final against Albury High School, this Thursday at Noreuil Park, Albury.

Be Involved in this Year’s Culcairn Show If you have aspirations in event management, media or secretarial duties and would like to gain some experience in these fields, helping plan this year’s Culcairn Show might be just the way to do it.

The Culcairn Show Society Committee is inviting young people to become involved in

this year’s community event to bring some new ideas and assist in planning the attractions and stalls for the day. The 2011 show will be held on Saturday 1 October.

Last year we had Home and Away’s Luke Mitchell come along and support the event, maybe you can too. It could be a great addition to your resume as well!

For more information about the opportunity please contact Rosie O’Keeffe via email [email protected] or mobile 0415 034 577.
